Works OOB for me with Proton with 6.3-8. No thinkering was required. The game perfoms better on Pop_OS + Proton than on Windows.
Sometimes the game will hard crash the entire PC with the screen full of graphical corruptions, forcing me to hard reset. I noticed these crashes often happen after a game update, to which I'm still using the shader cache from the previous game build. Deleting the shader cache and rebuilding it seems to fix the issue.
I also ran benchmarks and stress tests on Linux and Windows, just to check if it is an hardware issue or not. System passed in all strees tests without issues.
Other than these few problems, the game is fully playable from start to finish. But stick with the native Linux version.
Issues with the lighting system not working properly in the ruins stage, rendering the game way too dark.
Running the Windows version with Proton (any version) wouldn't render the icons and text for the Steam overlay. Nothing in the Shift + Tab menu, no icons in the achievements pop ups.
If the Windows version causes problems, try the native Linux version.
Works very well. Stuterring and slowdown might be caused by DX to Vulkan translation overhead. A beefier hardware should have no issues.
Minor stuttering in Run and Gun stages and minor slowdown in Boss stages. These issues are not present when I run this game on Windows 10 on this same hardware.
2 Players Co-Op works flawlessly with Mint + Proton. Used wired Dualshock 4 and a Generic USB Gamepad. No tinkering needed for it to work, it was plug and play.
100% playable with regular Proton. Local co-op with two wired controllers works out of the box.

The game will not load your saved progress if you're disconnected from the Internet. I think this game requires on-line/server side autentication to load your save file. Other than that the game saves and loads progress.
Yep, it works on my shitty internet. Take note that playing this game in on-line mode will drop the FPS a little. Enable off-line mode in the in-game settings menu to maximize performance if you're playing solo.
gamemoderun %command%
Open the dmc5config.ini text file from inside the game's folder and change the line "TargetPlatform=" to DirectX11 and save. This will force the game to run in DX11 (DXVK) mode instead of the default DX12 (VKD3D), which might reduce stuttering and eliminate random crashes in some PCs. In my case the game just runs better in DX11 mode.
When using GE-Proton, the game crashes and closes when you try to visualize the videos in the Talents Shop menu. However, the video files play just fine under regular Proton 7.0-4, just with minor loadings.
Activate download of shaders and backgroud processing of shaders. It is a lot of shaders for this game (8-9 GB), but it will make the game run smoother. Use Feral's Game Mode if you're experencing random stutterings. On my system I can get constant 60 FPS with graphics mostly on max and shadows on mid. Avoid GE-Proton for this title, it crashes when you try to play a video in the Talents Shop menu, making an important piece of the game inaccessible. Use the official Proton from Valve.
Windows version works OotB with regular Proton. Played from start to end without any issue.
Minor stuttering when compiling shaders for the first time. After that the game will run smooth.

Noticed it ran a bit choppy on Linux than on my Windows partition. Use gamemoderun to fix this.
Game is on my brother's library. First time he plays a game on Linux and from his experience he is enjoying and playing the game just fine. Game is rendered correctly, audio is perfect, controls are perfect, Ubisoft DRM thing works under vanilla Proton.
Perfect
Because this is an old game, wether you play the native Linux version or the Windows version using Proton, the game might not detect your gamepad, only the keyboard. If that happens, open the game's properties go to Controls and enable Steam Input for this title. This will force the game to detect your gamepad. Then map the buttons on in-game settings. The game is fully playable with my Dualshock 4. Other than that this game runs flawlessly on Linux (tested both native and proton versions).
Both native and windows versions are perfect on Linux.
It is a good simple racing game for all ages.
Original Sony Dualshock 4 connected via USB. I had to disabled Steam Input for this title to get the controller to work in this game.
gamemoderun %command%
The game had slowdown moments, despite having simple graphics. Using Feral's Game Mode fixed it. With it I can play the game at max settings at 60 FPS just fine.
Works out of the box with vanilla Proton. Minor slowdown can happen in some hardware. Feral's Game Mode can help reduce slowdown.

Some framerate drops during busier boss fights if I'm playing with Maxed Graphics settings. Most notably during the final phase of Armstrong's boss fight.
Playable from start to finish, even the extra stories for Sam and Wolf.
*chef's kiss* Perfetto!
Playable from start to end without any issue. Noise update also works.
gamemoderun WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command%
Download and install the mod Project Resident Evil 4 HD to get the definitive experience and fix the tank controls.
Minor desync with audio, lipsync and subtitles, despite the game running at stable 60 FPS.
After installing the Project Resident Evil 4 HD mod the mouse aim wouldn't respond, only camera aim with mouse. But now I already got used to playing with the Dualshock 4.
After installing the Project Resident Evil 4 HD mod the game has severe slowdown when facing a two or more ganados. But Feral's Game Mode fixed everything, and now the game is smooth 60 FPS at max settings.
Game would out of the box without mods, but I think they will have a subpar experience, specially if this is thier first time playing RE4. You can install the Project Resident Evil 4 HD mod by adding the exe installer to Steam and running it with Proton. Just install the mod as you would on Windows, it is very straight forward. After this, run the game and click Yes to patch the games' exe and don't forget to add the "WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command%" (without the quotes) command to the launch options, otherwise the controls might not work.
Works out of the box for me. No issues with cutscenes. Just use regular Proton.
Dialogue audio might get out of sync with character animations during some cutscenes.
Plays like native.
gamemoderun %command%
Use Game Mode to boost the game's performance on weak hardware.
Perfect. Playable all three stories from start to finish without issues.
If the Configuration Tool doesn't detect your external gamepad, then go to the game's properties>Controls, and enable Steam Input for this game. This will force SA2 to detect your gamepad as a Xbox controller. Set the Configuration Tool to use your gamepad in the Controls tab.
This game runs better on Linux than on Windows. Just use vanilla proton and you're good.
gamemoderun %command%
If, for some reason, the controller disconnects, the game freezes and stops responding. Make sure you have a good USB or Bluetooth connection.
I dual boot Linux Mint and Windows 10. This game actually runs better on Proton than on Windows. On W10 I have to play the game at Low settings and get around 40 FPS in some stages. With Proton I get stable 60 FPS with mid preset in all stages.
gamemoderun WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR_STRENGTH=1 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR_MODE=ultra %command%
Be aware of the game's DRM, which can trigger if you switch Proton versions 5 times in less than 24 hours and lock your game for 24 hours. The DRM has makes hard to play this game offline, mas it has to authenticate at least once before running. Other than that the game is fully compatible with anything from Proton 7 onwards.
My PC is on the weaker side, so I had some major slowdowns in the Open Zones and minor hiccups in the Cyberspace. I used GE-Proton because of the built-in FSR, which allowed me to have better image quality while rendering the game at lower res to get a FPS boost. I got around 40ish to 60 FPS in Open Zone and 60 FPS in Cyberspace and the Giganto boss. Ambient Oclusion ON, FXAA enabled, everything else pretty much disabled or Low.
Also, if you're into mods, modding Sonic Frontiers is very hard on Linux if you're not a Steam Deck user. On the SD there are things that pretty much automated everything for you, but on any other Linux distro there's so many jumps and hoops I gave up. Running the HedgeModManager.exe through Proton doesn't work.
I'm back 10 months later. This game now works great with regular Proton, and even has better performance on my PC now than months ago.
gamemoderun DXVK_ASYNC=1 DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 WINEDLLOVERRIDES='dinput8.dll=n,b' %command%
Yes, you can play this game with mods on Linux. Just make sure to add the WINEDLLOVERRIDES='dinput8.dll=n,b' %command% at the end to boot the game with the Mod Loader. To install and run the Hedge Mod Manager on Linux you'll need Bottles, and modify some of the Frontiers' system files (otherwise the HMM will not "find" Sonic Frontiers). There's an up-to-date guide on how to setup Hedge Mod Manager on Linux on Sonic Frontiers' Steam Guides.
Proton 7 fixed minor audio bugs I had. Game works flawlessly: Zones, UFO Special Stages, Blue Spheres, 3D elements, animated cutscenes.
gamemoderun %command%
I actually 100% all Steam achievements for this game. That's how much fun this game is. Plays flawlessly on Linux using vanilla Proton.
Cute little visual novel game with a lot of charm in the writing. The Final Boss is surprisingly epic and somewhat emotional.
Perfect on Linux.
Black Screen After the Title Screen
Tested Proton 7.0-3 and Proton Experimental. Both returned Black Screen without sound after pressing "A" on the Title Screen. I can Alt+Tab the game, however, no graphics or sound are rendered.
gamemoderun %command%
I'm back to say this game now works 100% on my PC. My guess is this game didn't liked my previous Nvidia GPU. Now I'm using an AMD card with Mesa drivers and this games works very well on it.
gamemoderun %command%
I played this game to completion many months ago. This game should work just fine with the current version of Proton, because it was perfect on Proton 7.0-6.
