Works perfect. Recommend mods.
Easy 60FPS but recommend running at 45fps/90hz for better battery. Expect about 4 hours at 45fps, but it does depend on the map. Some community maps are not well optimized, but the official content is all very performant. Singleplayer vs. Multiplayer can make a difference as well.
It feels perfect for the deck. I do recommend adding some mods for a more in-depth, sim-like experience, but it is not necessary.
If you prefer street-skating and want wider mod compatibility, go to the game properties and switch to the "alpha" build, 1.2.2.8
If you prefer transition or vert skating, stick with the public branch, 1.2.7.8. It still supports the essential mods, albeit with less features on Dawg's XLMod for custom stats. This branch also has somewhat better animations and ragdoll.
Don't listen to those who say you cannot save stats on public branch XLMod, they absolutely do. If you want to be certain, after making stat changes, bring up the modlist menu that normally appears when you boot the game, and hit 'save'. The core features missing from this version of XLMod are lack of preset loading and steeze/stance customization, which honestly aren't very impactful to the experience. Essential adjustments are gravity increase and/or pop height decrease, and realistic manual catching.
- Personally I prefer this branch because I love transition skating. The only mod I miss is the object dropper, which I still didn't use very much.
- You will want to do some minor input config to be able to toggle mod menus and interact with them. I personally use the rear buttons, with different combos such as double tap, hold, etc. If you are using a lot of mods with menus, a radial menu will be better suited. Enable mouse movement and click on one of the trackpads.
I'm not sure if linking is allowed here, but you can find all the modding related info/links if you search 'skaterXL mod docs vercel'
Either use the non-steam-game method or protontricks to run Unity Mod Manager. I used protontricks and ran it under the existing SkaterXL prefix.
If manually installing map/gear mods from Mod.io rather than in-game, you'll need to go to Steam's compatdata folder for the game, and navigate to C:/users/documents/SkaterXL. The destination folders are clearly labeled.
Worked perfectly OOTB and had quite literally no issues.
WOWEE KICKFLIP
PS5 and Xbox 360 Controllers Didn't Work
The game starts up just fine. But I just couldn't get my wired controllers to work. I tried using the Steam config tool and Proton GE, but nothing helped.
I've used these controllers in many other games, for example Outriders yesterday. Pretty odd that this game doesn't work. I requested a refund. It's a shame.
Installed UnityModManager (https://www.nexusmods.com/site/mods/21/) using Mono (https://www.mono-project.com/download/stable/)
The game runs great on proton, it's pretty much on par with Windows. Dualshock 4 worked perfectly as well. For the mods you have to use symlinks or copy the game to a different location and install mods there, then copying that over to the main folder. I used the Boned Ollie (https://skaterxl.mod.io/boned-ollie-mod), Late Flips (https://skaterxl.mod.io/late-flip-mod-with-animations), DeckFX (https://skaterxl.mod.io/deckfx), XL Graphics (https://skaterxl.mod.io/xlgraphics), SoundMod (https://skaterxl.mod.io/soundmod) w/ VX Soundmod (https://skaterxl.mod.io/ovalord-vx-soundmod), and XXLmod (https://discord.gg/fnETv5BKVX) and they all just work without any issues.
Using the rec version of Proton the game just installed and played as normal. Using mono I was able to get modmanager/XXLMod to work.
Worked right out of the gate, no settings had to be changed at all. Stable 60FPS. Draws between 12W and 15W usually. Multiplayer works too.
If you limit TDP and GPU performance, keep in mind that some maps need more performance than others, especially the ones from the "mods" section. Personally I eventually stopped limiting these.
Once I resumed the game from sleep and the music was very out of sync and didn't recover. Restarting the game fixed it. Only happened once;
It just works!
Everything working like a charm out of the box, even mods!
Out of the Box, didn't have any issues, the only customization was to install extra mods.
Installed Unity Mod Manager (https://www.nexusmods.com/site/mods/21/) then installed "Stats Menu" (https://skaterxl.mod.io/stats-menu-board-wear-shape-menu)
xbox controller Input felt laggy, but this could just be a feeling. not 100% sure on this one.
subscriptions to mods via mod.io didn't appear to install the mods, I needed to use the Unity Mod Manager.
Game runs really great under the latest beta 1.21b and with Proton 6.3.1. Only the Tutorial is not really playable. Runs to slow.
Tutorial is really slow.
The game runs great. Played the beta for multiplayer which worked without any issues. Experience was flawless so far!
Was running the public beta (Adding multiplayer support)
Game works mostly as expected including online multiplayer in the beta branch.
Music tempo is marginally slower than it should be.
Works, but player model isn't there.
I had to switch to Proton 3.7-8 to get my controller working, but the player model is completely gone. Although it seems everything else works. On other versions of Proton, my controller doesn't work and nothing happens, though the player model is there.
Controller only worked on Proton 3.7-8.
Constant crashes & freezes & long loading times.
Runs flowless and out of the box since 1.0
Runs without any bigger problems, some micro stutters from time to time but nothing serious
Before 1.0 it ran beautifully. After, it became a fiddly mess. Hopefully Proton patches will fix these issues soon.
Missing player models after the 1.0 update (doesn't effect gameplay, the board is still visible)
Absolutely refused to launch with any other version of Proton (3.7-8) after the 1.0 update
Everything seemed to install and run without any issue whatsoever. I'm very stoked that I can play this game on Linux
Was able to play without issue using the default Steam Play settings.
1.0 played fine. maybe a little bit less performance then with windows, but overall really well. Nothing weird.
Runs almost flawlessly, no tweaking needed
Runs at about half the framerate compared to running it natively on Windows
Performance is about the same in every Proton version; on my PC, it runs at an average of 45 ~ 50 FPS on official maps, and 60 ~ 70 FPS on custom maps (Ultra quality). However, gameplay still feels smooth, despite the non-ideal performance.
Installing custom content is fairly easy once you find the folder, which should be ".steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/962730/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/Skater XL" (create it if it doesn't exist).
On the beta version, installing mods was fairly easy through UMM (as long as you were able to find the executable). I suspect it will be the same once mods get ported to 1.0.
Playable with Intel graphics but with low framerate, unplayable on Nvidia graphics due to severe graphical bugs and low framerates.
There were severe graphical bugs like blacked out models and full screen bugged filters
Eventhough the severe graphics bugs, the framerate on Nvidia graphics was surprisingly low
The first boot of the game crashed
The game froze a couple times while I was doing challenges, but ran fine besides that.
Version 1.0.1.2 is working far better for me than the beta version did. No graphics issues, no crashing bugs; it's all running smooth.
1.0 Update Doesn't Work
I just see a bunch of black figures. I can hear my character doing things but there is no visibility. It is unplayable now.
The game runs very slow anything above than the Very low setting (which is around 85-110 fps). Low gives me 45, while Ultra High gives 40 fps on the latest beta (v0.3.0.B - transition).
If you're just here for the gameplay you'll have fun
Some larger maps don't play too well and look terrible
Maps don't load sometimes and I have to restart it
I compared performance between Linux and Windows, and with linux I had to have my settings on the lowest resolution. On windows I was able to have the highest resolution. Despite that, I do all of my work on linux so I don't mind trading quality for convenience.
Mods were a little bit of a hassle between trying to install UMM and finding the correct path. It can be done and once I had everything in place, it really is literally drag and drop to install additional mods.
I think the slowliness of the game is due to the game itself, not to the compatibility tool. At least, it's working.
runs really slowly even in low graphics and poor resolution
Launches, and then crashes with tweaks
Added "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%" to the launch options (found via the notes on Kingdom Come Deliverance, another Unity game)
Game still crashes after a few seconds.
Doesn't launch
Shows the Unity logo in a window and crashes
The game look like work perfectly, few bug but it's beta Add mods seems difficult but im sure it's not impossible
Doesn't launch at all.
Tutorial Videos do not play, runs perfect otherwise.
Has recently started running at about half speed. Before 4.2-9 is ran perfectly fine. Not sure what has changed.
Tutorial videos do not play. Playable otherwise.
Doesn't even start, it just says running but nothing happens
Game runs just fine. Only issue is that the skater model doesn't load so I can only skate as a ghost.
after switching from solus (my silver rating) to arch there is now no real issues aside from just a little lower fps, otherwise runs just fine without any tweaks
started up okay, doesn't run as good as windows, a little stuttery, but have not encountered any major issues, seems to work fine with a controller too
