The game is a little buggy (Entering mine outside bounds, Getting left alone on the planet etc. But those does not seem to be proton specific, looking at the steam discussions)

After you did the launch option everything runs perfectly.

You need to use PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% as a launch option or else out of the box the game will have missing textures after that everything runs smoothly
