K-Lite codecs required
Out of the box, movies are black screens, with audio but no video.
Following FluffyPotato's advice, I found the K-Lite codec pack online, then downloaded the installer .exe.
Then ran "protontricks --gui" -> selected the game -> default wineprefix -> "Run explorer". Then navigated to the downloaded .exe in there, and ran it.
In the installer, I selected the codecs, deselected everything that didn't look necessary, then exited once it installed.
Game now runs its movies perfectly. 😎

Cutscenes will be upside down for some strange reason.
Works good out of the box.
Completed full game on linux.
Encountered only one issue: opening and ending videos played upside-down.
Works fine and is playable if you accept upside-down cutscene videos.

Had bars at top and bottom even though video options menus said 1080x1920, alt-tabbing out and playing around with settings fixed the issue.
The cursor was several inches above where it's effects were located, had to slowly move the mouse to get it to select the proper options.

For the videos to work it needs the K-Lite codec pack to be manually installed. I opened the installer in the protontricks explorer and navigated to the installed i previously downloaded and it installed fine. Previously I also tried installing every codec in protontricks but none of them worked.
Considering the lack of cinematics I would either use a virtualized Windows or stream from a Windows PC.

Very playable overall, no movies - just like other users, otherwise good, just use an older proton version.
Sometimes the mouse would be stuck in a 4:3 box after alt-tabbing. Fixed after alt-tabbing again.
As of 2021, use proton version 3.7-8, the newer ones do not seem to work.
No video, mouse gated / glitchy
Doesn't play initial Video (black screen) .. had to ESC to move forward.
Window sized to screen but mouse was locked into a smaller area and didn't allow me to press the buttons.
If only animations (cut scenes) worked, I would say the experience is enjoyable.
Video settings reported resolution 1920x1080 but it looked stretched with black bars up and down. Mouse movement was limited to smaller box. Fixed this with toggling full screen and changing resolution.

Animation are not working. Like when game is launched, you see only a black screen, so you need to press Esc to see menu.
Input is broken outside of menus. Unplayable.

Could not click on any characters, making game unplayable.
As others said, intro movie doesn't work. Main problem is that even after that, only a screen with some burning ships is shown, and nothing happens. No menu, no cursor, nothing to interact with.
Videos don’t work, but can be skipped (press ESC). This include the intro video, which makes the game look frozen (black screen and nothing happens).
