The multiplayer issues (unable to connect to game) also exist on Windows, so it's not a Proton issue.
The game plays like utter crap using Proton, the Linux version requires tinkering.
Every second the game movement freeze but sounds work. Release the movement key and the game continues. Don't know if this is an issue in the "Linux" version (if you can call it that).
Constant movement freezes which only go away when letting go of the movement keys.
Cutscenes, other than the initial intro, don't play.
In some areas the framerate dropped from 60 down to 15 for some seconds.
Mirros are very pixelated
Switching from 50Hz to 60Hz causes the game to stick to 800x600 instead of configured 1920x1080.
Multiplayer not tested.
Different proton versions, using winetricks - nothing works, game won't start
Running winecfg on the flatpack WINEPREFIX to change the Windows version to 7 to allow multiplayer.

Since the Origin-DLC/patch, 45 seconds after starting to fly around, the game freezes and then crashes to the desktop. Doesn't matter if flying on a planet or in space.
Regardless of chosen Proton version, game is stuck on the launch screen after the intros.

Set WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/221680/pfx for both "winetricks sound=alsa" and "winecfg" (where to set the Real-Tone cable as audio input) and then disable the Real-Tone cable with pavucontrol. To circumvent the audio lag, unset the auto calibration to off and the value to 10.
The game crashed once mid-song.
The game crashes when you look at it. The game crashes when you move the mouse. The game just doesn't know what it wants.
Regardless of chosen Proton version, the game crashes at different points or different actions.

Confirmation dialog windows not showing up, but confirming with Y and N works like a charm.
The game crashes every now and then, whichever Proton version the game was started with (using Steam default 5.13.2, also 5.9-GE -6-ST and 5.9-GE -6-ST)
Multiplayer using Steam invite works like a charm, even cross-plattform (Windows and Ubuntu)
