Wouldn't run on the latest proton (8.0-4)
The opening cutscene has no audio or video. The grass effect pops in by the player and enemies. This doesn't affect gameplay.
No audio or video during the opening cutscene
DS2 ignores Steam controller settings on Windows as well as Linux. I gave up getting other controllers to work and bought an XBox controller.
The game crashed twice in the Black Gulch using v5.03 of Proton. So I reverted to 4.11-13 for the remainder of the game, I didn't get the error after that. I had one crash on load in the Earthen Peak with 4.11-13. To be fair I had a similar number of crashes playing Dark Souls Remastered on Nintendo Switch.
I played the game to completion but didn't visit every area. I noticed some black flickering during the ending credits, but it's just white text on a black background. Aside from the few issues noted in my report, the game runs perfectly.
The minor screen tearing I saw can be fixed by a comment left by another user: https://www.protondb.com/users/404318497#hdT9207bUG
If you alt+f4 the game, Steam sometimes doesn't realise the game is stopped, and continues to add to your total play time.
In the last quater of the game I got a handful of crashes, and one time it got stuck at 0% on the loading screen before the main menu.
The default proton version is out of date and doesn't have working audio. You need to force use of the latest version.
Nothing launches
This game ran fine for me on the same version of Ubuntu in 2020. Judging by googling the errors in the program output, it could be that I have out of date software that maybe the latest Ubuntu would be up to date with.

Tabbing out for too long when you're on certain screens will crash the game.
The frequency of crashes would not be expected or appreciated by a typical gamer.
Crashed dozens of times. Sometimes the process exited, most of the time I had to forcibly kill it. Crashes would tend to happen multiple times in the same part of the game. Restarting my computer usually made this go away, so I'm assuming it's not that certain parts of the game are dodgy.
Tabbing out makes the game freeze on a black screen.
Stuck on a loading screen
I was able to choose whether I wanted ray tracing. A dialog appears with the title "Notice" and in the box is says "Loading", but it never finishes loading. It seems Windows users are having the same issue, however their issue is solved by tabbing to a popped up window where they have to do something; no such window appeared for me. This game was playable for me in 2019, but not now.
- I had to disable Steam Input for the game.
- I had to change Steam's settings of my Switch Pro Controller to make it behave like a controller in desktop mode. The default was a configuration for interacting with a PC desktop. After changing it, the game picked up the inputs as gamepad inputs just fine.
I was able to complete the whole game, but sometimes the game or my whole computer would crash while it was running, in a way which doesn't happen when the game is not running.
It works even when other players are on Windows (and Linux).
when tabbing back in the screen is black and the program stops responding
Works perfectly, except it uses the wrong input device on load sometimes. I experienced one Unity crash, which isn't particularly strange.
I had to go into the settings to switch controller. It detected my controller twice sometimes, where one of them has the left and right stick work backwards. I could easily get round this by switching input in the settings.
A couple of crashes. Only one caused by the game I think because I got a Unity error.
Using super+d (minimise all) twice, caused the Ubuntu launcher to appear over the top of the screen. To fix that I would toggle fullscreen off and on again. Alt-tab worked as it should.
Sometimes getting an achievement would cause the game to minimise. Other than that it worked perfectly. I was able to complete the campaign. I did not have to do any reinstalling.
Crashed twice one day. No problems after restarting my machine.
