Cursor artifacting when returning to main menu.
Lots of stutter and bad performance on Proton 8.0-2 and GE-Proton 8.3. Proton Experimental had stuttering still, but didn't have the performance issues.
When launching the game, launch in VULKAN mode. Otherwise, you will get the error message: "DX12 is not supported on your system. Try running without the -dx12 or -d3d12 command line argument".
Returning to main menu hangs the game. Or it just takes so long I thought it hung.
My Steam Deck crashed and rebooted every time I loaded my save, regardless of proton version or graphics options. Tested on game version 1.04.
The text in the inventory is difficult to read.
No controller support.
Change visual settings to all LOW.
gamemoderun mangohud %command%
Switches itself to fullscreen when set to borderless with the resolution of "(-)" by default, whatever that means.
This is likely steam itself, but on internet with slow upload speeds, it's easy to not fully upload a save, creating conflicts and losing progress if you don't pay attention.
Game runs at a smoothish* 60fps in Windows, but sat around 50fps in proton regardless of resolution.
Avoid moving game files between operating systems often and you'll be solid enough.
Couldn't click anything while game was in windowed mode (currently using i3wm). Connecting a controller and switching to borderless or fullscreen fixes that up.
Official launcher home screen layout was a little odd. Probably because it isn't expecting a classic extra scroll bar on the right hand side. The play button is there though if you scroll down.
I prefer launching through the official launcher rather than XIVLauncher since I get steam integration working that way.
Looks like results are improving, but still isn't playable.
After renaming the videos folder, the main menu showed (loading screen might take a bit first try due to the game thinking the video is playing). Took a couple launch attempts to sign into Microsoft Account, but that was successful. However, the game crashed in the settings menu and while trying to enter the Multiplayer menu.
If you want to play this game comfortably, you may want to wait until everything is sorted out, such as DX12 to Vulkan in proton.
Using Proton-5.9-GE-6-ST
Floating rocks, but after some tinkering, it was resolved. Check other posts or GitHub issues page for more info.
Used custom Profile file to make Windowed Borderless, but that didn't take up the whole screen.
Game ran at ~10 fps
Game crashed on wine assertation
SteamDeck=1 %command%
I'm able to view game selector menu, but once I choose a game, the game crashes with the following error:
Assertation failed! Expression: "!status && "vkAcquireNextImageKHR""
This occured for me on both Fedora and EndeavourOS, but doesn't occur on the Flatpak version of Steam.
In KHBBS during Ventus's final boss fight, pressing "Retry" after you die can sometimes leave the game in an infintely loading state regardless of the storage medium.
Other reviews are positive. Trust those more than this review.
The native version gave me a max fps of around 50 fps
Running the game in Proton straight up didn't work. That may be due to running the game off of an NTFS drive, but I already did some tinkering to it to supposedly make it work. However, it didn't start, even through multiple Proton versions.
If you want decent performance, run in Proton. However, if you do, make sure you do a fresh install on a native Linux file system.
Changed gyro sensitivity
Hero icons are small and pixelated, but that's due to low res screen and unchanged scaling.
No option to show only gamepad legends, so it rapidly swaps between gamepad and kb+m. There is an option to show only keyboard legends, but that restricts gamepad usage in menus.
Shader compilation stutters soon after start.
I have bad internet, but it worked fine.
Happy to see that the game doesn't use the Battle.net launcher!
DXVK_ASYNC=1 gamemoderun %command%
Make sure your max refresh rate is set properly along with your max framerate. By default, it maxes at 60hz at 60fps.
In-game ping stayed around 250ms until I changed the launch options along with switching to GE-Proton.
Additionally, make sure Steam downloads the shader cache, otherwise you might experience some heavy microstuttering. For reference, my download size clocked in around 2GB.
DXVK_HUD=compiler gamemoderun %command%
For some reason, the FPS when using standard Proton 9 sits around 40-50. When using GE-Proton, you have to let the shaders compile (don't update your kernel or graphics drivers after this is finished), but it runs flawlessly after it's done.
Additionally, I'm not using HDR since Gnome doesn't have it, so I don't have to use gamescope (thank goodness).
Requires a lot of tinkering, and even then, it may not work.
Textures were stuck at LowSpecGamer-level resolutions.
It is possible to switch to other windows, but after a few seconds, the game snags it's attention right back.
Rockstar's cloud saving system is a mess and does not like to synchronize with other systems properly.
Some EGL issue that a lot of other people are talking about occurred in my testing. Supposedly, disabling TAA fixes it, but it ain't gonna look as pretty.
When moving the graphics slider in settings, the settings below it swap to low/medium and do not change appropriately as it does in Windows. Restarting the game is not a fix to this.
Another issue is that screen tearing is present even with vsync and triple buffering enabled.
Tested with Proton 6.3 and Proton-GE 6.15 and running NVIDIA 470.57.02 drivers.
Proton-6.15-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Installed a fullscreen unredirect extension to remove tearing: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1873/disable-unredirect-fullscreen-windows/
The game is greedy with it's attention, as it will grab focus after an interval of a few seconds.
Frame pacing issues were present, even with FSR.
Disable TAA to fix crashing.
Do not use the graphics preset slider, as it will lock everything to low until you reset your graphics settings.
Using the Cosmic desktop (GNOME) along with NVIDIA 470 drivers.
The game requires a decent amount of tinkering to get it to run and to get it to perform well.
Anti-aliasing isn't as clean
Game changes monitor refresh rate down to 60hz from 144. No way to change it, even with -hz=144
in launch options. Also, borderless window by default doesn't take up the whole screen on Gnome 3.36
Highest settings stay around 50 fps.
The game performed well after tinkering in Ubuntu 20.04, but after switching to Pop_OS! 20.04 and copying all the proton files over with modifications, I started to get performance issues again. Will update when solution is found.
Works pretty well. Minor tweak for NVIDIA may be needed.
If on GNOME or Cosmic while using NVIDIA drivers, install this extension to remove screen tearing if you have it: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1873/disable-unredirect-fullscreen-windows/
Major graphical issues
Screen kept flashing black.
Low framerates and major stutters
Can't tell why my experince is different from everyone else's...
Game used to work, but recent update broke multiplayer.
Game crashes occasionally, not exclusive to Linux
With the new update (Aug 6 2021), you will get kicked from servers for suspicious activity.
Even got SKSE and Vortex (Lutris) to run properly after hours of typical Skyrim mod tweaking along with the mods of my choice.
Cursor and camera movement speed is typically way too fast, even on low game settings. Haven't tested if changing OS cursor speed changes anything, but editing the config files is an option.
Plug and play. Simple as that. Things should be a breeze.
Steam Cloud Saves were a bit funky to upload and download while distro hopping, but that might just be my internet playing games with me.
If crashes occur after switching from Windows to Linux while playing this game, make sure you verify the game's file integrity. That should sort things out.
Works out of the box.
Could not change camera speed when using hardware cursor, but software cursor is going to be sluggish but allows camera speed change.
In order to use my native Kingsisle account on Steam, I needed to copy essentially the whole base game from a bottles install using the installer on Kingsisle's website to the Steam game location. I was surprised this worked perfectly through Proton.
Duplicated left stick on right
Screen gets tiny after switching apps
