FPS limit set to 40
It seems that sometimes there's some delay in the game processing data from controller because it's easy to fail in some scenes that require precise movements and timing. And you need to replay it again and again. However it's supposed to be easy, because the game is not such difficult actually, and when you see on YouTube how people pass all the game easily with mouse and keyboard, you feel depressed that you have to deal with several repeats with Steam Deck controller.
Very rare crashes.
The game works well with standard Proton, but GE seems to work more stable and smooth.

Had no issues with multiplayer at all
Tried Proton GE 7-49, 8.0-2, 8-4, 7-55 - nothing works. It either closes immidiately, or I see black blank screen.
For me GE-Proton 8-4 was working better (more stable, less crashes) than the standard Proton version.
I had to adjust graphics settings in the game. By default some parameters were set to high. I had to put all options to medium. Without such adjustments I experienced a lot of game crashes. At medium settings the game works stable. Playing on Steam Deck with joystick is generally OK, at least the game has a great support of joystick in terms of buttons and triggers. However, it's almost impossible to make silent kills using joystick, because it takes too much time to position everything and the game does not has a pause when playing in real-time mode. Besides the Steam Deck screen looks really small for this game and is not very comfortable. I also played with keyboard, mouse and big screen monitor by connecting Steam Deck to the hub. In this case the game feels much better and allows to show much more map which is more comfortable for tactics planning. Mouse allows easier positioning for stealth kills but even with mouse it's quite difficult to do it fast and precisely. I recommend playing this game on Steam Deck, but I think currently without pause mode it's comfortable to play only with external monitor connected. Actually it's the only game I recommend to play like that, because others like X-COM or Xenonauts are great on the Steam Deck screen, perhaps because they all have a pause.
Tried to decrease graphics quality from default to lower values. Set max FPS to 40.
Some elements are hard to read, for example, supported buttons to press showed at the bottom of the screen during the game intended as tips.
At cust scenes and attacks the FPS drops from 40 to 14.
The game several times got into "frozen" state. In this state the graphics does not change on screen, but if I click on buttons I can hear a click sound effect from the game.
The game "freezes" a lot, causing it to be unplayable.
This game is not optimized for Steam Deck. I can't believe it got the green compatibility mark. The main problem is that the game heats too much the Steam Deck and drains lot of battery. I tried to reduce the graphics settings but it didn't help me. In my case 30 min of game play drained the battery from 90% to 65%. That's too much. Besides there are bugs and the game often stops working. In terms of optimization for Steam Deck, the game looks very raw and unfinished.

The game sometimes crashes. It's better to test & try different versions of Proton to find out which works best for you. I tried Proton 7-49, 7-55 and 8 series. The standard 8.0-2 in my case seems to work best, even better than Proton GE. With a proper controller setup you will enjoy the game!
Sometimes the voice was not in sync with motion if you go to the menu and back
Sometimes the game crashed, especially at later scenes, perhaps memory leaks? The pause of the game and skipping scenes does not work! It's a real pain if you want to get all achievements.
The game is great if you don't seek to all possible endings. I got all achievements and it took me a huge amount of time because of the bugs with skipping scenes and game crashes.
Well, you can play with default controller configuration, i.e. like mouse + keyboard, but I prefer the one, where you can use the D-pad. The game works great, no issues or crashes so far.

The on screen keyboard does not work to enter the character name or nickname, and sometimes in the character screen the gamepad stops working. Only clicking the touch screen helps to navigate.
If there were more than 5 fighters on stage, then the FPS drops from 40 to 2! Impossible to play. Couldn't complete the first mission.
The game does not support controller natively and has serious issues running on Steam Deck. I would not recommend to run this game untill the developer fixes that.

Sometimes I got lags and FPS drop from 40 to 15 or even 10 in dynamic scenes for short period of time like 2-3 seconds.
The game crashes sometimes. And it does not have autosave! You need to saver regurlarly manually yourself otherwise you loose your progress!

Sometimes there's an issue: if an alien goes inside the ship on a metall floor, then his steps sound plays continuesly till the end of the mission.
Rare crashes
A wonderful game for everyone who likes the original X-COM series.
The text is a real pain to read. It's very small and thin. But the main problem is that it lacks contrast: the text is light grey on dark grey background or black background. Being a person without color or vision disabilites I find it impossible to play the game on Steam Deck. The settings of the game do not have any options to change the UI.
The game crashes a lot. By default it starts with "fantastic" graphics settings. I reduced them to normal, but it does not help a lot. I still get lots of crashes like every 15 minutes.
This game is in early access, and it has lots of crashes and the text is barely visible and almost impossible to read which ruins all the experience! I don't recommend to play this game untill the developers will add option to make the font more contrast and increase its size.
