works without problems, out of the box
Works flawless out of the box, no tweaks made, no crashes, runs smooth.
Works great out of the box.

The text is a real pain to read. It's very small and thin. But the main problem is that it lacks contrast: the text is light grey on dark grey background or black background. Being a person without color or vision disabilites I find it impossible to play the game on Steam Deck. The settings of the game do not have any options to change the UI.
The game crashes a lot. By default it starts with "fantastic" graphics settings. I reduced them to normal, but it does not help a lot. I still get lots of crashes like every 15 minutes.
This game is in early access, and it has lots of crashes and the text is barely visible and almost impossible to read which ruins all the experience! I don't recommend to play this game untill the developers will add option to make the font more contrast and increase its size.
Especially in the tutorial went down to 5FPS or so when multiple units were moving. Sometimes lags in the shot preview mode or when switching from one preview to another.

early access stuff mostly, native performance :)
sometimes game stutters and lags out of the sudden (especially when one is aiming at alien who is one screen away)
game is still in EA and it shows.

The Move/Shoot preview consistently slows down the game to ~10fps, but only when targeting an enemy. It's annoying but still usable.

It hitches quite a bit when processing turns or seeing new assets, not sure if this is Proton specific or not.
Only kernel I am able to run this game on without having the amdgpu drivers freeze is the amd-drm-next
branch.
Note: My experience was with the Xenonauts 2 demo!
I Have been playing Closed Beta v11.3 using Proton 5.0-9 for five hours without any problems.

Closed beta V6.3. Runs smoothly and can be played without any issues; unknown difference in performance against native.

Closed beta V5.1. Geoscape works perfectly; battlescape terrain flickers insufferably. Not comfortable on the eyes at all => bronze.
