Runs without problems
You have to disable Steam overlay. Just to be sure I also disabled the VR view mode (the other checkbox next to Steam overlay if you have it).
Works ok with slight performance degration
The default mapping for the Index controllers is very strange. However, it should be fixable with a custom mapping.
The FPS is much higher if all 2D UI elements are hidden during driving.
To play the game you have to use an alternate launcher. I had no luck getting the normal launcher to work using the tips from the other reviews. But there is no need to install anything besides these steps - the game itself runs out of the box.
- install dotnet452 with: protontricks 244210 dotnet452
- download the alternative launcher "Content Manager" - the free light version is sufficient
- Unzip the Content Manager exe into ~/.steam/steamapps/common/assettocorsa
- Set the start command to (including the quotes): ~/.steam/steamapps/common/'Proton 4.11'/proton waitforexitandrun ~/.steam/steamapps/common/assettocorsa/'Content Manager.exe'; echo %COMMAND%
I used a logitech G29 steering wheel (ensure to invert the pedals when configuring) and a Valve Index.
This is a VR report
Unfortunately the game does not start when Steam VR mode is chosen. It works fine in non-VR mode as others have reported. Using Proton 4.11.13 does not help either.
VR: intro videos and menu do not render
Hitting enter several times finally results in the first rally showing up (with minimal graphical settings). The rally itself works fine but without menus the game is not really usable. Toggling between window and fullscreen did not change anything (that's a workaround which some people on Windows successfully used). This is with a Valve Index on proton 4.11-9.
To get the game running the certificate installation is required - see the other reviews.
Runs fine in single player, the crashes during load happen but as the game loads so quickly they are not a problem.
Stable during gameplay, sometimes crashes during load
Multiplayer was not tested.
Black screen after initial text.
An initial text is shown and the ambient sound plays. Controllers are rendered and can be moved. But nothing happens besides that.
Crashes on startup with "getthreadcontext failed"
The game works with Proton 4.2.9 out of the box.
Optionally install the latest dxvk with "protontricks 566700 dxvk". The game does not work with proton 4.11-11.
Frequent Unity crashes
The typical Unity getThreadContextFailed exception terminated the game for me after the initial fight.
Works out of the box
Framerate is not so great.
Loading the next level occasionally crashes. Better save every now and then.
I am using a Valve Index headset.
Crashes on start almost always. I got it running once but never again since. The workarounds that are suggested in another review (created FOVE folder and install vcrun2015) do not help. This seems to be a Unity VR issue that hits other games too.
Install vcrun2015 after (!) a first start of the game.
The game runs with ~ 50fps on my system
The game tends to crash during start and sometimes in the menu. A workaround I found is to set the start options to "+mphost 1". This will start the game into your own multiplayer lobby which you can leave then. Without the option the game is unlikely to start at all.
Might require a FOVE directory in [steamAppsDir]/compatdata/489380/pfx/drive_c/ProgramData. I simply added it too and did not verify if it is required.
Runs good but has VR head moving lag spikes which make it hard to play
The game moves your VR head every couple of seconds for a small amount. It's not the typical lag spike but real movement. This starts to be quite distracting after a while playing and causes headache.
The bundled Uplay version does not work. Install the latest version with protontricks 527100 uplay
. The bundled Uplay would do this too if it would work.
Regular controller desyncs. Not critical but annoying.
Game crashed after ~30min of playing
If after starting the game the screen is black but you hear the game sound then this means that you are outside your gaming area. Go into it and the screen will show up. This seems to be a feature as it is reported in the game's log.
Runs fine on highest settings
The game window forces itself back into focus upon desktop or window switch. But Alt-Enter works to switch between fullscreen and windowed mode so this is not that of a problem.
The game itself is very playable besides the fullscreen issue.
Upgrading equipment had problems but it rather looks like a bug of the game.
Using Valve Index with Index Controllers.
Still works fine with the current proton on Valve Index.
Mods cannot be loaded because the game tries to load them relative to the game's directory. So for example my Steam installation folder is /ext/myuser/steam/... and I have to create a symbolic link: cd /ext/myuser/steam/steamapps/common/Wreckfest && ln -s /ext .
runs fine in VR
No problems encountered. I use a Valve Index. It runs smooth enough to enjoy playing some tables.
