The only issue I noticed is that the Deck doesn't seem to know the game has exited when you select Exit Game
The game runs on Adobe AIR and unfortunately does not support Steam Cloud, so you'll have to manually backup your save game data if you want to play on another platform
The game is no longer playable on Steam Deck after the latest update. It's not the first time Rockstar has screwed things up with their launcher either.
Really miss the rumble. Haven't tried with a paired Xbox controller, but rumble on the Steam Deck itself doesn't work.
The Microsoft/Xbox login window appeared, and had to use the Steam button shortcut to open the keyboard to log into my Xbox account. The text on this window was quite obviously rendered at a very low resolution.
Text in the Xbox login window. When viewing the overworld map, a textbox that scrolls jerked up & down continuously
Shows keyboard glyphs/does not show Steam Deck controller glyphs. Also, there is no rumble/haptic feedback when using the Steam Deck's built-in controls.
Subtitles take up quite a bit of the built-in screen on the Steam Deck. I'll probably fiddle with Accessibility settings to try to fix this.
Seem to not be able to change volume while the game is running; it uses the volume level set before the game is launched
Works great on Steam Deck. Framerate sometimes drops a little, but very playable
I switched a few inputs around and added burst mode to a back paddle for easier harvesting of crops
Not a single crash or incompatibility. Works perfectly
The menu that displays initially is unpassable. Must use the Beta "no-launcher" to bypass it
The opening videos play perfectly, but once the game starts, both cutscenes and game play have flickering and vanishing textures that render the game unplayable.
Steam+Left Arrow is required for the Escape key
Tried Proton Experimental and GE-Proton7-30
Tried multiple versions of Proton and the native Linux version, and none work
Tried the settings recommended here and elsewhere for 40hz and disabling tesselation and PhysX
Steam Cloud does not work for this game, despite what the Steam store says
Frequent crashes, rendering the game unplayable
Despite the incorrect Steam Deck compatibility rating, this game does not run on the Deck. It has constant crashing and freezing, and it also doesn't work with Steam Cloud. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, deleted Proton files, tried different versions of Proton, etc., and nothing works. The worst part is the game works just long enough to suck you into the story and then crashes, and it crashes at different places every time, and if you reinstall you'll lose whatever little progress you already made (since Steam Cloud doesn't work), so you have to start the whole game over just to see if it'll work correctly this time, which it doesn't.
I've played through this on Xbox, and it's amazing. If they fix the problems for Deck (or re-rate it to show its incompatibility), I'll give it 5 stars.
Seemed like very slight crackling. Honestly hard to notice.
The game installs quickly and launches IMMEDIATELY. It runs incredibly smoothly on the Deck.
The game needs FSR or IGTI upscaling to play on Steam Deck, which results in pretty heavy artifacting, but that's to be expected in a game like this. With the small screen it's not as noticeable.
Analog triggers are not detected by the game. There are some weapons that have different modes for half-pull vs. full-pull, and there is one weapon that has an additional mode for a trigger pull in betwen half and full. On PC, the initial fix for this was to disable Steam Input and have the game handle the controller directly, but Steam Input cannot be disabled on Steam Deck. The developer delivered a fix for this feature, however on Steam Deck, this fix has not resolved the issue for me.
The game is fully playable without analog triggers though, and it did not affect my enjoyment of the game.
This game works well on Steam Deck and is extremely fun. Few notes:
- Controls: Analog triggers don't work with the Steam Deck's controls
- Controls: Haptic feedback/vibration doesn't work on the Steam Deck's controls. This game has fantastic rumble, so this is unfortunate Controls: By default, gyro aiming is enabled when your right thumb is on the joystick; this is easily disabled if you don't like gyro aiming
- Graphics: There's visual artifacting from FSR or IGTI upscaling (see my graphics section)
- Graphics: For performance, I recommend setting the graphics down one notch from the default
Given that performance on my Windows desktop with AMD 5950X and RTX 3090 is terrible, I'm actually surprised at how well this runs on Deck
The game does not support simultaneous controller and mouse/keyboard input. In fact, the game doesn't even let you see what the keyboard keybinds are if you access the menu via controller. So I set up a button to switch between controller and mouse/keyboard mode so that I could assign a button to auto-walk (there is no auto-walk keybind for controller); while in the mouse/keyboard mode, I have the joysticks send mouse/keyboard inputs. I set all this up just for the auto-walk feature. But if you want to use any keyboard keybinds that don't have a controller counterpart, you'll need to either do this or else switch to mouse/keyboard emulation entirely.
Controller and mouse/keyboard aren't supported at the same time, however this is not a fault of running on Proton. See rest of review
This game is an absolute mess, is buggy, and has lots of issues. However, the performance on Steam Deck is surprisingly good, especially given that the game runs poorly on high powered PCs. Save file synchronization between Deck and PC works perfectly (however, the game doesn't auto-save, so always remember to save, save, save).
AMD FSR is not good, as we all know, so the typical FSR artifacts are present around hard edges, most noticeable around your character when moving
This is one of the killer apps for Steam Deck in my opinion. This game is absolutely fantastic, 10/10. Performance is not perfect on Deck, but it's a great looking game and is playable on Deck.
