Literally "out of the box", installed and ran it the exact same way I would a native game, and if I didn't know better, I would have absolutely said this was a native game. Perfect!
I performed 0 tinkering, just installed the game as I would any other Steam game, and it runs perfectly.
In-game audio chat (Push to Talk) does not seem to work. I believe its a known Proton issue at time of writing.
Ran it just to see if it would work, and it seemed to. Last time I ran the game was on a Windows 8.1 machine with slower hardware, and was easily able to see a marked improvement in FPS, so I have high hopes that this will run well. Will report back later to update.
With Proton 4.2-9 it seems to "just work" - made it all the way through the entire story line, and then went back to do some more. Also played the entire game on a Steam Link, with Xbox 360 wireless controllers (using the Microsoft wireless adapter, connected to the Link).
Any attempt to play at a high resolution results in painfully low (sub-10) FPS, and the controller mappings I found did not seem to work. Steam controller users beware, the 10-vote community mapping is a dupe - all/most buttons are mapped to "Shutdown computer". If I ever get one that works, I may upload my own.
Runs incredibly well, goes to fullscreen automatically without issue and exits without issue as well!
Ditching the now abandoned native port for Linux with Proton was the way to go.
HFF seems to suffer the worst from this in my library, but periodically the Steam Link/wireless 360 controller dongle seem to confuse the same two controllers as being separate new devices, thus either or both controllers stop working. Restarting/switching from modern to legacy Xbox drivers in Steam Link resolve the issue, but it periodically pops up.
Depending on the map (especially community created ones) periodically it will just crash out.
200% better than the abandoned native port.
Wireless 360 controllers, while they work for 2 players (most recently it's the most stable that it has been in a long time -- multiple controllers used to be a real headache with anything Steam Link/Proton) over time Steam thinks it sees multiple controllers (four, six, eight) when in reality I have the same two physical controllers just re-connecting each time we play. To fix, I either restart the machine or switch the Xbox controller driver from Modern to Legacy/vice-versa, and then reconnect. HFF seems to suffer the worst from this, and the controllers are most touchy here.
Occasional crashes, especially in the community-created maps (even the good ones), but it's not enough to ruin the gameplay.
Works, no tinkering!
Controller config for wireless 360 controllers is quite good. Online multiplayer was also strong and flawless.
Even with the res set to 1280x720/Low textures, my FPS is pretty consistently sub-30. Most of the time its playable as it hovers around 25, but occasionally it dips below 15 and shows visual stuttering. Also, there seems to be an odd stuttering occasionally that occurs about every 5 seconds where the FPS dips for a moment before returning. It doesn't seem to be related to distance drawing or complex objects, though.
Runs about the same on Proton 4.2-9 as it does on Proton 3.16-9 Beta. Read other reports that said it runs fine with 3.16-9 and WINED3D11 enabled, but I did not see any improvement whatsoever.
Runs well! Had to fiddle with the Xbox 360 controller mapping and do some manual mappings, but once I figured out which keys do what, I was able to cobble together a pretty decent profile.
Remove any virtual/network adapters except loopback and ethernet/wireless for multiplayer host/join
There was a brief period where a few of the keys weren't responding (but mouse movement was) but after bringing the menu up, it disappeared. I saw similar issues on Windows, as this is an Early Access title still.
Replace bin/StrangeBrigade.exe
with bin/StrangeBrigade_Vulkan.exe
to get the game to run. The black splash that requires you to know where to click no longer pops up, and the game just runs once you use the correct EXE. Runs quite well with it!
Runs very well
Simply enabling Steam Play for this title is not enough, prior to installing you must join the beta program using the code "F9LLREbgTxg635NC" (subject to change, check out the Discord at https://discordapp.com/invite/f5mBuWv) and then install. After that, I was able to play local multiplayer with 1 other player. Controller support was not there yet for the second player (P1 works with WASD out of the box controller config, P2 uses similar keys on the right hand side of keyboard) but it does work quite well. Only issue is that multiplayer with Windows players does not work (session key entered, hit "Join" and the screen just refreshes for now). Otherwise, seems to work identically to its Windows counterpart on the same hardware.
Use the "experimental" branch with the beta code "F9LLREbgTxg635NC" (subject to change, check out the Discord at https://discordapp.com/invite/f5mBuWv)
Did not go deep into gameplay, but fell off the level several times and it did not seem to affect the gameplay or FPS whatsoever. Also played on Steam Link with an Xbox 360 controller (Microsoft wireless adapter) with no issue.
