You can Alt-Tab out of the game, but you can't come back to it. Just stays as a black screen, with no UI at all.
Noticeable FPS drop when I choose a more elaborate environment/background. It's fine when using the basic geometrical environments, though.
Can't return from Alt-Tab.
October 11 2021 update broke the game under Proton
Can't even start up the game any more. You can hear sounds and music, but there's nothing but a black screen. The game used to work before this update.
If you Alt-Tab out of the game, you can't come back. Screen won't render, clicks won't register.
Would not work natively. Would not work with vanilla Proton 5.0-9. Needed to set launch command: PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Won't start
I tried with and without Proton. Tried with the Punkbuster that comes with BF4; tried with manually updating Punkbuster using the Windows download from the site, with WINE. I'm using Gentoo: Had to re-emerge (install) media-libs/mesa
with the vulkan
USE flag; this made the Origin installer and app actually show up. When I try to start BF4, the Origin app complains about "can't install files in this folder" or something like that. But pretty much all of the Origin app is unusable. Can't click anything, and it doesn't seem to render correctly 85% of the time. Stutter, freezes, etc. A separate BF4 window starts up, and sometimes goes full screen. The furthest it gets is the blinking cursor (of BF4). It doesn't even get to the title screen or intro video clip.
Pretty much broken and unplayable for me.
No issues at all playing multiplayer for an hour. Never kicked, never crashed.
Needed PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 or else the game crashes after 4 minutes with eventfd: Too many open files
I use the Dvorak layout (set via KDE), but when choosing Dvorak in the game settings, it still played as though using QWERTY layout. Had to set QWERTY for things to work.
Crashes way too often
If graphics settings are turned up (such as the default after installing), load times are very long. Like several minutes just to get to the main menu. Turning the settings down, load times are much much better, like just a few seconds to get to the main menu on startup.
Crashes very often. Probably every 2 or 3 hours, after clicking on a portrait to bring up info on a character, which you do in the game very often.
3 times in 60 hours of play, all monitors would go blank, and the keyboard would be unresponsive. Have to hard reset the computer to be able to use the computer again.
EAC not working with proton (yet)
Playable, but no sound at all
No sound whatsoever. Tried changing settings in-game. Nothing fixed it.
Hopefully none of the puzzles need sound to solve, or it would be game breaking.
A minor problem: On occasion, the game does not exit cleanly. The "Play/Stop" button in the Steam client is stuck on "Stop" (i.e. Steam still thinks the game is running), and there are processes left running which need to be manually cleaned up with kill -s TERM
, etc. Other than the annoyance of having to clean up processes, this does not seem to have any adverse effects. Your account progress, stats, in-game currency, etc. seem to be all saved server-side, so none of that is impacted.
Performance is worse when reaching the limits of your RAM and swap, so keep some breathing room in your RAM, and you should be fine.
Seems to work perfectly. Install and go, no tweaks.
I only have 90 minutes of play so far, but I have encountered no problems whatsoever.
Worked almost perfectly with no tweaks.
Initially, frame rate was bad, and fiddling with graphics settings in game did not help. I've learned by now, though, that I just have to start the game up, then exit out (just to the EA launcher), then start it again, and frame rate is just fine, even at max settings.
It supposedly has a native version, but it won't start. Proton needed.
Steam community discussion acknowledging Linux native version is broken and Proton is needed: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1455660/discussions/0/3074251201338228497/

Game won't start
Tried with Proton 5.0-9 and also tried natively launching
Without PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1, the game would not run for more than a few minutes. Error in the console was eventfd: Too many open files
. Attempting to raise the limit with ulimit
or sysctl
did not help (it's like there's a file descriptor leak). Only setting PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 helped.
eventfd: Too many open files
unless I used PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1
Works out of the box, no tweaking needed.
Music volume seems really low, and there are no volume settings in the game. It seems this is just a general problem with the game, even on other platforms, and not something specific to Linux or Proton.
