Protontricks to install DirectPlay for Multiplayer

Pretty much everything works as intended, you just cant alt tab. If you attempt to do so to, lets say, message someone on discord real quick and then go back to the game, you'll be met with a black screen with the audio still playing.
Alt tabbing gives black screen (the game, not whole) and sound plays but cant play the game itself

Use protontricks to install DirectPlay dll for multiplayer. Also recomend virtual dekstop (via winecfg) because the game goes black when you alt tab out.

Works great and smoothly on the steamdeck. You need to choose a community layout for the best experience, because this game was made for keyboard / mouse.
Singleplayer is working without any problems / stability issues

Tinkering is required for LAN Multiplayer to work.
You need to enable DirectPlay for the Multiplayer menu to work. You can do this in desktop mode using Protontricks.
Fantastic game. I hope Stronghold Definitive Edition will be good since Firefly Studios haven't had much luck in their last 10 years of game development.

This will open a window. Cancel the "mono installer" dialog.
In the window, go to the graphics tab and check the box for the "mouse capture" and "create a virtual desktop" with your screen resolution. On my system, this resulted in a blinking blue screen at startup, but enabled "Alt-Tab" functionality.
Start the game with Proton 5.0 and close it. Then, use the following command after you installed "protontricks" for your distribution:
protontricks 40970 directplay
After directplay is installed, you can change back to the default Proton version. I got permission errors, when trying to install directplay with higher Proton versions.
It works right out of the box.
Alt-Tabbing won't let you return to the game.

Played GOG version with Proton 7.0-1.
You can even patch the game with UCP if you feel the need.

Alt tab would mean game breaks and you can't save. Not strictly a game saving issue, but still.

Sometimes I had to schange the resolution to show everything properly in fullscreen
It's only working with proton 5.0-10
1st step: Install wine. Type WINEPREFIX=/path to your steamapps/steamapps/compatdata/40970/pfx/ winecfg in terminal the like comrades advised in the comments below.
2nd step: Graphics tab > check "capture the mouse" and "emulate a virtual desktop". You may need that to freely switch windows by pressing alt+tab.
3d step: install protontricks (pip install protontricks). Install directplay (protontricks 40970 directplay). That is multiplayer fix.
