GE-Proton 9-16: If you experience missing particle effects (like aura spells particles, fire on the buildings, glow particles on lootable corpses), try removing PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1
from launch options if you use it.
So the max resolution supported without any patches is 1600x1200. If you go higher than that, you can expect some problems. You can install the widescreen fix (from here: https://www.nexusmods.com/spellforceplatinumedition/mods/2?tab=files&file_id=4), but it can generate additional issues.
- missing HP bars (solution: check your resolution, this happened to me when I tried to customize my resolution to fit my screen in windowed mode without hiding the system status bar)
- crashes on esc/menu (solution: resolved by removing
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1
from launch options.) - the "desired resolution not found" error on start (solution: switch to Proton 7-26, or set
-windowed
or-window 2560x1440
in launch options.) IMPORTANT NOTE: Fullscreen does work with Proton 7-26 and widescreen fix; however, the FPS issues come back. Proton 9-16 works without performance problems, but you are forced to play in windowed mode. Switch the window resolution to lower if it doesn't fit your screen.
Performance problems with GE-Proton7-26. This problem didn't happen on GE-Proton9-16.
If you go from the main menu to Options and if it is crashing the game, you need to switch to Proton 7-26, make changes, and go back to 9-16. (You'll need to keep your config.lua
intact for this, or windowed mode will force the lowest res possible).
Previously I was playing the game on the latest version without any issues. This report may be helpful for anyone willing to play on legacy v1.54.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 is needed but it works amazing
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%
I had some issues when launching version 1.54. But the latest version works PERFECTLY! No FPS drops, no crashes, no screen resolution issues. What's more, latest publictest does not require GameSpy to be installed to play multiplayer.

borderless didn't work
The Hero that is Glorious Eggroll fixed the low performance in the current versions of GEProton8-30+ From 11 FPS to now a stable 60 FPS with VSync. Haven't tried Fullscreen / Borderless with GEProton8-32 yet
gamemoderun mangohud %command%
Finally it's fixed :'( I don't know what has been changed but you can play the game with DXVK without any stutter. I don't know if its the developer mesa git or my kernel but it's working now. If you are using wayland game crashes on wayland use x11.
Unless you use the aforementioned Proton version, scrolling with the right mouse button will not work well.
Much slower than running on Windows.
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=50 PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%
with pulseaudio setting this could be overcome mostly
aspect ratio in menues is off when using modern Displays - there is a community fix for this
No problems noticed. Tbh game running better than on Windows xd
Game did not start with the default settings, had to change Proton version to version 4.11-13. (How to: Game Properties -> Compatibility -> Force the use of a specifig Steam Play compatibility tool: yes -> Proton 4.11.13). Worked flawless afterwards.
OS: Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS
some smaller text but readable
DXVK_FRAME_RATE=30 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 %command%
Severe performance issues without launch options I supplied. On my hardware if I run at mid settings at 900p with a 30 FPS lock and FSR it will moslty hold 30 FPS.
Performance is a serious issue even on hardware that far exceeds what the game would require.
Mess around with it but I recommend a 30 FPS cap and using FSR at a lower native resolution.
I installed DXVK and DgVoodoo.
This release appears much slower than the original retail release.
Except for the saves there's no difference whatsoever
Had to use PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Crash when opening the save game window is fixed by setting the launch options
Except for the fixable save crash, everything seemd to work fine and as well as I knew it to be. No unexpected slowdowns, no crashes or other unknown bugs.
FPS is much lower than expected for an old game and unstable, on any graphic settings
FPS drops from 60 to 20 when playing in 3P, no problems in RTS view.
4.2-9 is the only version I've tried that gives me no major perf issues + no save game crashes at the same time.
~5 - 10 FPS
Unusable low FPS
Launches only with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Especially 3-rd person
CPU utilization seems pretty bad. The highest core was only at ~40% at most.
I do have hope that it will get better with newer versions of Proton. Proton Experimental had better performance, but issues with right-clicking (right click would not release)
Does not work with a Proton version over 4.11. FPS is unstable and too low to enjoy the game.
Everything is slow, from render to animations.
Even if you play on the lowest settings possible, third-person view will still suffer from slowness.
the fps stutters make it unplayable
stuttering, like low frequently low fps and cpu cores spikes (only 1) up to 100%
The crashes, especially when saving are braking the game experience =(
Fullscreen did not start / immediately crash. Used "-window" Launch option as a workaround.
When opening the menu (or pressing the esc key), the game crashed often.
There are some minor issues but the game is playable
When there's a lot of units with particles effect on screen the game slows down a bit, still being playable but barely. Sometimes the game would freeze for less than a second when loading a new new model/texture/sound effect.
I played with the legacy 1.54 version w/ wide screen patch as per suggestions on the steam forums. This was suggested to fix an infinite spawn issue on some levels. This worked as I didn't encounter this issue while playing those levels. Problem is that on some other levels (especially the snowy ones) I've run into that same problem, fortunately I was able to overcome it by lowering the difficulty level. I don't know if this issue was caused by running the game through proton but since I couldn't find those specific spawn points reported anywhere I must conclude that it probably is. For now I've only completed the original campaign so I can't report on similar issues in the two expansions.
Running spellforce with the proton 5.0-9 will freeze the game when trying to open any of the UI menus. The level design of the last couple of levels was actually more rage-inducing than any of problems caused by running it through proton.
Game runs well, had to force use of Proton 4.11, game does not work with Proton 5.0
Occasional graphic stretching after cutscene fixed with restart. No other issues.
Vertical graphics stretching after some cut scenes. A save and restart fixed each instance of the issue.
It is necessary to force the use of Proton version 4.11. With version 5.0 it does not start.
Out-of-the-box unplayable on (Arch) Linux due to the inventory and dialogue problem.
Slow framerate, playable, but noticeable framedrops
I experienced reliable freezes in the inventory and in dialogues.
Spellforce was playable without adjustments. Some minor framedrops, but I haven't encountered any bugs so far.
The game didn't perform as well as on Windows and had some framedrops, but it ran stable and quite well.
<30 FPS but still playable
For multiplayer get protontricks and run "protontricks 39540 directplay"
Works without any tweaks. You may want to lower graphical settings if you want to get higher FPS. Third person view will suffer even on lowest settings though.
With 4.11-2, it crashes at launch, but not with previous versions.
My cursor was flickering but with newer version of Proton, it's fixed!
Good perfs, no crash, no graphical issues.
10-25 FPS
runs great only slight shadow flickering but it's rare
