Game runs flawlessly out of the box including fmv playback.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command%
Ran on 5W.
Works OOTB. Played with Evo mod for voice, which needs the additional launch options. Linux install instructions for mods worked just fine on desktop mode.
Runs just fine. There can be issue with initial cutscene - you can either skip it or use protontricks to install libs (check notes)
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command%
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command% is needed if you want to play with japanese voices (from EVO release) You can use this to download VO https://github.com/chyyran/skyinstaller If for some reason you are unable to download voices with installer, you can find VO by yourself on the web - there are instructions there.
mstream, quartz, and lavfilters are required to play initial cutscene
Completed whole game on normal difficulty - enjoyable expirience, once setup is done, there is nothing a way. Can reccomend.
Game initially crashes silently to desktop, whether normal or DX8 mode is selected in the launch options. The configuration tool only renders a black screen as well. I suspect it has something to do with Wayland. I eventually got the game to start successfully through some manual configuration tweaks.
I eventually got the game to launch by:
- Launch the configuration tool in DX8 mode.
- The tool will render only a black screen.
- Hit enter. This will launch the game. Presumably because the "start game" button in the tool is focused.
Somehow, when the game started successfully when launched via the configuration tool. Subsequently, the game can be started by selecting "Play DirectX8 version" option.
However, the game starts in 640x480 resolution. The resolution can only be set via the configuration tool (which doesn't work), and can't be changed in-game. I manually set the resolution by editing the config file. The config file can be found at:
steamapps/compatdata/251290/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Saved Games/FALCOM/ED_SORA2/ed6_win2.ini
Set the following variables to change the resolution:
[Video]
Width=1920
Height=1080
Since the configuration tool doesn't render, any configuration changes need to be changed using this file instead.
Have played for about 5 hours so far. No gameplay issues. Video cutscenes work on my system. Controller inputs work.
Superb game! Works mostly fine except movies and some occasional crash
On Chapter 9, before the battle with Renne, the game crashed when characters talked. It was solved by removing Julia from the party.
Movies not working, can be disabled in setup menu
The game works fine by disabling movies from the setup menu. Also bear in mind the reported crash and workaround in Chapter 9.
Saved game from the first chapter can be loaded even if the ending movie didn't work.
If you're willing to ignore the jank that comes with the video issues, this is a great RPG that runs near flawlessly on Linux.
Protontricks is needed to run videos or else you will get errors such as colored bars. This however worked inconsistently for me and most FMVs were skipped. But anyone who wants to play this game should still try to do it.
Simply open Protontricks, select the game, select the default wineprefix, install a Windows DLL or component, and install amstream, lavfilters, and quartz.
Launch protontricks, select Sky SC, select default winprefix, install Windows DLL. Install amstream, quartz, and lavfilters. This will fix the opening movie lagging issue. All other movies also worked fine for me after this tinker step.
One time during the final chapter, the game did not register the DPads or left analog for a command selection on screen. Using the touchscreen as mouse click worked instead.
Played the whole game and finished it on Steam Deck.
Similar small annoyances as with FC, but mostly works well out of the box.
I often couldn't open the game from steam, i needed to open the secondary launch window and then start the game from there.
occasional crackling, only happened in one or two sessions and restarting fixed it.
Often didn't pick up the d-pad for whatever reason - ended up mapping analog stick controls to the d-pad as well and this fixed it, though meant i had to run everywhere instead of walking (not really a problem)
Generally works very well, I played through the entire game just on my Deck. Like FC, some of the videos play too slowly, leading to the audio ending before the video is complete - this is primarily an issue with the intro cutscene and most of the other ones are fine. Configuration tool is annoying to have to deal with especially if you're trying to play docked, but it's a minor issue in the grand scheme of things. Wouldn't recommend boosting the resolution any higher than 1920x1080 - when I tried to bump it to 1440p to match my TV resolution, a bunch of the UI got messed up. Still looks pretty sharp even at 1080p though, so not a huge deal.
Protontricks steps: Default winprefix, install Windows DLL and select amstream, quartz and lavfilters. The game would run fine without this but the opening fmv audio and video would desync and the video ran too slow. Taking this step fixed the video issues.
At tiimes the dpad might not work. I mapped the dpad to use up, down, left and right from the left thumbstick instead.
The game is 100% playable out of the box. It just needs a tinker to make the video and audio sync up on the fmv's.
Launch protontricks, select Sky SC, select default winprefix, install Windows DLL. Install amstream, quartz, and lavfilters. Videos didn't work without this.
Videos wouldn't play due to missing codecs.
Didn't work with default Proton
just had to change resolution and text settings in launcher and i opted for a community layout.
had to play with the resloltion to get it to fit on my monitor but could never get it to go true widescreen, had to use system wide FSR to achieve borderless 1280x800 on deck
Only tinkering needed is to switch to experimental Proton version. Videos also worked ootb.
Very rarely, I experienced crackling and the audio / music would play slightly slower. Only ever lasts for about 10 seconds.
Worked Perfectly Out of the box
The issues I ran into are specific or rare.
Full screen when launching docked would leave the picture misaligned (down and to the right). Launching in handheld and THEN docking would be fine.
Resuming from sleep caused rapid-fire input that skipped dialog and prevented normal game play. This was fixed with relaunching software.
I've played ~23 hours in the game (beat chapter 4) with only the issues mentioned.
Runs perfectly with proton 7.0.2
Played from chapter 3 onwards on deck with no issues at all. In game videos all worked fine.
Proton Experimental
Normal Proton either froze at a black screen at the first movie (7.0-1) or got stuck in an infinite loop when the falcom logo appears (7.0-2). After switching to experimental i didn't experience any issues though
Was capable to play the whole experience, the complete 9 chapters, getting all the BP. Never had any mayor problem.
I had this problem with the first game, where some icons in text boxes are misaligned. Seems to be a issue in windows too, though.
There is a minor problem. If I start the game without a controller, the controller would never be detected. If the game started with the controller connected, but during gameplay disconnected, like when runs out of battery, there is no issue reconnecting afterwards. I tried to view if the system didn't detect the controller, but no, the issue is with the game app. Probably a issue on Windows too. I used an Xbox One controller, a USB dongle and xow drivers.
I tried with vanilla Proton 7.0-1, but the maps didn't load, and the characters walked in a black void. Tried using Proton GE, but then the game just crashed. With proton experimental worked well. Even rendering the FMV without any problem.
Just like in the previous game, icons within texts sometimes are misaligned. I don't know if this problem is in windows as well.
The experience has been excellent so far.
Tried the game with vanilla Proton 7.0-1, and the effects are the same as with Trails in the Sky FC, the characters render correctly, but not the map, so they move in a black void. That's why I played with proton experimental. Unlike what other report says, I could play the FMV correctly without any problem.
Only needed for voice acting mod
Non GE versions of proton won't display video correctly without installing something into the wine prefix, but GE works without doing that.
Installed mods to change the sprites for character portraits and add voice acting. voice acting requires a bit of tinkering to get working by adding a dll to the winecfg of the game, but changing sprites is just as simple as copy pasting the files
Proton-6.20-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.20-GE-1 with quartz and lavfilters
Videos play out-of-the-box, but only in half speed. To have them play in normal speed:
protontricks 251290 quartz lavfilters
Videos have artifacts possibly due to the slow playback
Videos play at approximately half speed whereas audio plays at a normal rate
Both Proton 6.3-6 and Proton-6.15-GE-2 run this game with about identical results
WINEPREFIX=/full/path/to/SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/251290/pfx/ winetricks amstream quartz
Then, disable winegstreamer through winecfg WINEPREFIX=/path/to/your/251290/pfx winecfg -> add winegstreamer- > edit -> Disable
wget https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases/download/0.74.1/LAVFilters-0.74.1-Installer.exe && WINEPREFIX=/mnt/extra/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/251290/pfx wine LAVFilters-0.74.1-Installer.exe
protontricks 251290 directshow
videos don't play
Install amstream quartz xvid to 251290 pfx. Then run winecfg, and add winegstreamer and set to disable. These steps enables video playback for seamless viewing.
- When starting a new game it may take 15-30 seconds to find previous game's clear save data for import.
- Opening cinematic has frame drop at the start yet recovers with video still in sync.
using the help I found on Ys: Oath in Felghana, the video now can play. Here's how to do it:
First, install amstream and quartz through winetricks WINEPREFIX=/full/path/to/SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/251290/pfx/ winetricks amstream quartz
Then, disable winegstreamer through winecfg WINEPREFIX=/path/to/your/251290/pfx winecfg -> add winegstreamer- > edit -> Disable
NOTE: replace 251290 with the App ID for the game. I haven't tried for another Falcom games, but I think it'll work as well
Works out the box, except movies.
Black screen on startup. I have to click the mouse to get past that.
The assumption is that movies do not work.
Messing with protontricks might or might not help fix that. I'll get to it, eventually.
Full playthrough with a Steam controller with combined controller and KBM inputs.
To get the logo screen working I did
protontricks 251290 directshow
To get the videos to work you need to install LAVFilters to your prefix (I chose all the options). With my setup the command was
wget https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases/download/0.74.1/LAVFilters-0.74.1-Installer.exe && WINEPREFIX=/mnt/extra/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/251290/pfx wine LAVFilters-0.74.1-Installer.exe
No crashes or hiccups, everything worked perfectly.
Videos must be skipped to access gameplay
If one disables/skips videos, one can access the gameplay of this game.
Currently, tweaks are required to get a video running. Therefore, this is not an adequate out-of-the-box experience
More tweaking/licensing is required from proton in order to run this game easily
Adding a new review because you cannot get past chapter 6 (50-60 hours in) without running on Windows
To get videos working, had to run protontricks 251290 directshow xvi
Hard lock in chapter 6 of the story in both DX9 and DX8
Everything works but the FMVs. To get those working, I had to use winetricks. This fix is BROKEN with proton 5.*, I had to use 4.11-13
To get videos working, had to run protontricks 251290 directshow xvi
Installs, DX9 runs, but videos are borked
The good: Game installs. Is bootable on DX9. Can access menus if videos are disabled
The BAD: Videos are borked. Must disable or install tweaks to play. And videos are crucial to this game
If linux gaming is to take off, games must run out of the box with the same success rate as windows
Installed directshow and xvid through winetricks to get videos to work.
The DX9 version crashed consistently when starting the final boss fight. The DX8 version doesn't have the same problem (I switched to the DX8 after experiencing the crash a few times and had no other problems finishing the game). Worth noting that the game autosaves before the scene where the crash occurs, which helped.
In general the game works fine except for videos. Running protontricks 251290 directshow
& installing K-Lite Codec Pack Basic into the prefix allowed all videos to work. This worked perfectly for 55 hours, until 2 of the final boss fights caused a CTD "Unhandled exception: page fault". I moved past these sections by booting into windows. The final piece of gameplay and video worked fine.
[CUTSCENES WORK]
Game mostly works out of the box. First played on the DX9 branch but had moderate frame lag (same as Windows). Switched to DX8 branch and had no more lag. Startup logos and cutscenes work just fine after installing LAVfilters with WINE while specifying the game's prefix. DS4 gamepad works fine as well.
If not for having to install LAVfilters, it would be platinum.
Everything worked perfectly. Even the save games from windows. Ran around town and did one combat. WIndow mode at lower res stuttered a bit but fullscreen at 1440p worked perfect. All sounds and music where there too. Reaching the start screen took some time though so be a little bit patient when the screen is black.
Get black screen for cutscenes, need to skip by clicking or hitting escape
