Besides the unability to alt-tab and use the mouse cursor outside of the main monitor, worked flawlessly.
Alt-Tabbing caused the game to freeze.
Cannot use the mouse outside of main monitor while on fullscreen.

The need GE Proton aside, Agarest Generations of War is now playable with few clicks away.
minor audio cracking noises
If it has more stability, it deserves a higher rank (Gold), considering the bugs are limited to audio cracking noises in videos. Aside from this issue, it offers the same experience I had when playing on Windows.

Proton versions 8, 9 and experimental fails at various points. GE-Proton9-2 seems to fix the problem.

Another window opens to show the logo and videos. Alt+Tabing several times to start the game.
Two crashes, the two while doing alchemy stuff
Occasional crashes and videos open on another window.

Works fine if you ignore FMVs not loading/working and videos showing up on a different window
TL;DR of my experience:
In-game audio works properly. FMVs however have some problems:
- GE Proton 8-22: FMVs work without audio
- Proton 8.0-4: Has audio but FMVs do not load
For GE-Proton8-22
Opening video as well as FMVs do not have audio. One example of this is the FMV that shows up at the end of the 1st generation.
For Proton 8.0-4
Opening video shows up and have audio. However, FMVs do not seem to load. In the similar example mentioned above, a separate window showing a test screen shows up instead of the FMV. (Searching for this shows that this might be a codec issue)
As others mentioned, videos show up in a separate window.
Still looking for a workaround about the FMVs not having audio when using GE Proton. Already tried installing DLLs mentioned in the other reports to no avail.
I am also playing this game on Steam Deck using Proton 8.0-4 and the results are similar (haven't tried GE Proton on the Deck).
You need to change one file and write something. Then, you need to switch windows since it open 2 windows.
Changed Agarest.ini file and wrote: [Video Card (Adapter 0)] Active=1 Width=1280 Height=800 BitsPerPixel=24 FullScreen=0 AntiAlias=0 LockWindowFrameRate=30.000000
There is no audio in movie.
Movie doesn't has any audio
Because there are 2 windows and using windowing. You will have problem which one to see for playing the game.
My kingkong 2 pro can't be detected.
Sometime it crash or only seen black screen.
You will not have easy time to play it. And sometime it crash or black screen.
steam/steamapp/common/Agarest Generations of War/Agarest.ini FullScreen=0
Videos launches in a separate screen. Can't skip using esc, just click the x to close video for skipping.
Launches with blank screen by default. Had to change options in the game foder to turn off full screen.
Go to your installation drive and folder: steam/steamapp/common/Agarest Generations of War/Agarest.ini FullScreen=0
Videos run but in a separate window. Couldn't skip videos with any button presses. Clicking close (x) on the video window skips it though, and the next video in sequence starts. The main menu loads and works after the startup videos. Note that the main menu is split between a video window for the background and the menu options. That was hilarious.
The video window closes once new game is started / save loaded. In game scenes that are non video all play in the default game screen.
Disabled full screen to run the game. You can edit the configuration file at HOME/.steam/steam/steamapp/common/Agarest Generations of War/Agarest.ini
FullScreen=0
Can't get past 2nd menu
Game installed, opens two windows like mentioned before Main game is in full screen, movie window is seperate. Every time a "splash logo" or anything plays in the movie window, it then closes and opens a new one. Every time a new one is opened the main game is minimized. Not sure if you can do this dance without two monintors since you need both to be in view for it to do anything. Unlike other reviews though the movie window does actually play
When I get to the main menue i can click on anything and it works. BUT when i click New Game or Continue the next screen is selecting a save file. Nothing in this screen is clickable (enter does nothing too)

No audio for premade movies
Movies play in a seperate window that does not accept input. This includes the main menu background. Need to switch between these windows. Can't easily switch between the movie window and game window in fullscreen.
No input accepted in movie window
Can't skip the startup movie
Need to close the movie window with the steam key after you get to the main menu background in order to access the main menu.
The game needs to be run in desktop mode and windowed. It can be switched to windowed by adding the following lines to the file HOME/.steam/steam/steamapp/common/Agarest Generations of War/Agarest.ini:
[Video Card (Adapter 0)]
Active=1
Width=1280
Height=800
BitsPerPixel=24
FullScreen=0
AntiAlias=0
LockWindowFrameRate=30.000000
Game does not work in gaming mode, only in desktop. Game only works in windowed mode and might crash when changing windows in fullscreen.
Game is shown into two windows: Game and movie - Sometimes information is shown in both windows (e.g. main menu background in movie window, main menu text/buttons in Game window). Input is only accepted in game window!

Despite a few issues, the actual game runs flawlessly.
Title screen won't render, nor will movies.
Alt-Tab locked up my entire system. Had to reboot from tty.
Here's what you'll need to do to play:
When you start the game, two windows will appear on your desktop. One is some kind of "movie window", the other is the game itself. The intro movie won't show, but you can watch those on YouTube if you really want. Regardless, if it wasn't done automatically by your DE, open the game window and wait.
Eventually you'll see the game's mouse cursor appear, along with the usual Steam-related popups about your controller, etc. Wait a bit longer.
Finally, the game's main menu will appear, though you won't be able to see any graphics in the background, just the menu. The good news is this is the last "problem" related to the game. You can load your game, begin a new game, etc from the screen and proceed to play the game as if you were on Windows.
Just be sure you don't alt-tab. When I did it, my entire system locked up and I could only move my mouse. Had to reboot from tty. I'm just happy that the game finally works at all, after all these years. No issues with framerate, graphics, audio, or crashing on my end (besides the alt-tab issue).

Game launches with an error message and exits
Tweaks mentioned below didn't work for me either
Game crashes 2 seconds after starting loading of the main menu, menu not fully loaded.

trying random dlls is futile
I downloaded KB3133719-x86.msu.msu from Microsoft here https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=53356, extracted it with cabextract, extracted some more cabs, found a wmasf.dll and several wmvcore.dll inside, tried some, didn't work. So unless you specify exactly where you have your dlls from, which versions they have, and possibly the sha256-sum, don't even bother to report. It's still broken.

1 - Protontricks : Install directshow d3dx9_42, d3dx9_43 & xact
2 - Download Wmvcore.dll & WMASF.dll and place them in the game's folder (with the .exe)
3 - Install k-lite-mega-codec-pack (I did through Protontricks using the gui task manager)
Movie & Main Menu audio is missing
The game freezes on a black screen if the game starts in Fullscreen mode. (disable fullscreen in the .ini file to get it to reach the main menu)
The game can be put into fullscreen mode once you get past the Main Menu. (the freezing issue might happen if you come across another movie... untested)
The initial movie is silent and the frame rate is awful. This continues into the main menu. Once the game loads past that, the issue goes away.
You can edit the .ini file to increase the framerate cap of the game. This doesn't fix the movie issues, but it can let you play the game at double speed. There are some slight issues with repeating sound effects in cutscenes from this.
1 - Protontricks : Install directshow d3dx9_42 d3dx9_43 & xact 2 - Download Wmvcore.dll & WMASF.dll and place them in the game's folder (with the .exe) 3 - Install k-lite-mega-codec-pack (I did through explorer)
I tried the protontricks solution below but it didn't work, still stuck on black screen.

I couldn't get it to work.
I tried protontricks and it still would get the same error.

still fails with previously mentioned fix.
"protontricks directshow d3dx9_42 d3dx9_43" and installing the mentioned codec pack through explorer, the game merely fails to launch in a different manner. I briefly get a black fullscreen, followed by a tiny "Wine Syst..." window which closes after 1-2 seconds.
protontricks directshow d3dx9_42 d3dx9_43, use shell option to install KLite Mega Codec Pack. Videos and everything work fine. Might not require everything I installed, this was first attempt as I figured it could work based on experience with similar games
When the videos were playing at the beginning, I couldn't click anything or the screen would minimize. They worked fine as long as I left it alone, and the minimization bug stopped when gameplay started.
The minimization bug also affects the controller, so you have to kind of wait for the videos to play out.

load a blackscreen then a error "prMovie::Open-Unable to connect pins 80040218"

States it's running but game never opens.

pin error like previous report

Get a black screen. Once I was able to get back to desktop error message : "prMovie::Open - Unable to connect pins 80040218"

Crashes with error: "prMovie::Open - Unable to connect pins 80040218"

Crashes at startup. WineHQ AppDB mentions that the game requires installing xact and d3dx9_42 with winetricks and then also placing rogue WMP10 DLLs into game folder to function and installing suitable additional Microsoft video codecs. Tested and it didn't cause the game to crash but instead made it freeze at start-up. Probably requires tweaking the codecs.

Crashes with this error: "prMovie::Open - Unable to connect pins 80040218"
