Now that it's playable fully offline, it's a perfectly enjoyable experience on Deck.
Sub 60 fps performance on all lowest settings, while maintaining native resolution. Sits at about 40-50 fps during most gameplay.
Worksperfectly fine
Poorly optimized game. Online play it's slightly stuttering.
Game causes Steam Deck to lag and fully crash.
Would not recommend trying this game as it seems to harm the Steam Deck OS.
protontricks 2071500 xact
Sound seems only to work on the first run after installing xact
, and even then most likely not. All that I know is that the problem is somewhere between FMOD and ALSA.
If sound isn't working, there will be a lot of log spam (see Steam/steamapps/compatdata/2071500/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/IslandsofInsight/Saved/Logs/
).
Pointer may be moved to (0,0) during game initialisation.
Game does not load correctly.
Loading into the game from the main menu does not work. The game keeps displaying the loading screen even when loading has finished (can be confirmed by pressing ESC and hearing the pause menu appear). Some other users said that it works on X11? Issue on Wayland, cannot confirm if X11 works...
Playing on this on linux is fine.
The game is simple prorly optimized
For some reason, I couldn't get Protontricks to install vcrun2022 on Proton 9.0-2 or Proton Experimental no matter what I did (something about some DLL issues?) despite d3dx9 having no such issues, but switching to Proton 8.0-5 allowed it to run with no further modifications.
Proton, proton experimental, proton ge, not even saw the game logo. No errors, just borked. Nothing showed up.
Completely freezes Deck on first loading screen
Tried on Proton 9.0-2 and GE9-2
I have about 60 hours in the game on linux using in home streaming the entire time. I've had 2 crashes in that time, but that' about expected for unreal engine. Otherwise, no issues. I have not tried installing on steamdeck.
Game crashes upon loading into the world.
Runs fine.
The game runs fine, around 70fps everything set to ultra in 4K. With FSR enabled, otherwise details need to be turned down for the game to be smooth.
I had problems with mouse focus in Wayland, but it looks like Plasma 6.0.3 fixed this issue ? At least I didn't get the issue again since I upgraded.
Very stable despite performance issues and bugs
Progress is saved automatically but specifically lore fragment and echoes of time unlocks from rewards are forgotten between sessions. Lore fragments found in the world are still saved though.
Typically stutters every time a puzzle is accessed, although minor it happens constantly as there are a lot of puzzles. Mildly annoying.
Most importantly no crashes at all and no problems with alt-tabbing in and out. The game did fail to launch while I had both it and the demo installed. Uninstalling the demo and restarting steam fixed this.
[Demo] It is palyable, but with performace impact
Problems with selecting resolution on full screen.
And if my screen is not 16:9 but 16:10 -- vertial mouse position don't match the cursor.
Also game crashed when I tried to change screen mode from within game. In menu it works.
In full screen mode with 16:10 screen vertical cursor ckick psoition don't correspond with drawn cursor.
Peformace reduction almost in half compared to Widows. Got 20+ FPS with simetimes raising to 40 and in some rare cases 50+
But on windows it runs with 50-64 (in rare ocasions 70)
Generally game is poorly optimized -- it pumps out lots of graphical effects, but uses old engine (UE4) which is struggling whih such effects.
crashed when tried to enter full screen when was in game session.
IDK. Online feature here is usless, but it worked. And sadly it's mandatory.
Realyl poorly optimized game where changing grpahical settings doesn't help a lot. And performs x2 better on actual Windows.
Devs are releasing game in 2024 on old UE4 engine, shame on them.
Two minor annoyances which unfortunately happen regularly (on launch and about once every ~5 hours of gameplay respectively)
When launching the game it doesn't capture focus, so it has to be tabbed out and back in - after which it plays as normal
Occasionally attempting to use the teleport function leaves you unable to move or open menus, and the only fix is killing the game (I did it via the main steam UI to "stop" the game)
Overall a great puzzle game, although note the steam reviews about multiplayer
Following the Instructions and taking 5 minutes of your time setting it up, it's like on Windows.
Using Flathub version of protontricks for compatibility with Flathub version of Steam: https://flathub.org/apps/com.github.Matoking.protontricks (Any other package outside from flathub version of protontricks will be more work and research to link together with any package of Steam. Recommended to have both Steam and protontricks from the same platform.)
At the loading screen, it uses some of your main RAM, but after a slight freeze, it switches to your swap space, assuming it loads and caches additional resources onto it. Recommended to have at least 2GBs of swap space, and just in case, have more, than 8GBs of available RAM usage.
The game must be tinkered in order to have all the necessary redistributables, as well as getting through the loading screen and straight into the game.
- Steam: Flatpack version
- Protontricks: Flatpack version -> protontricks (1.11.1 or higher) (Check with "$ flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks --version" if it's from Flathub)
Steps: Make sure you download properly:
- Proton Experimental
- Steam Linux Runtime 3.0 (sniper)
- Steamworks Common Redistributables (Necessary to have both DirectX and vcredist folder fully packed with all the files it needs to run. Check it by Right Clicking Steamworks Common Redistributables -> Manage -> Browse local files -> inside _CommonRedist folder). Use Verify Integrity on these, as well as to the game too in case files missing or any issues might happen during launch.
Launch the game at least once, till the Main Menu shows up. (Potentially not needed, but worth a try)
Since I used Flatpack version of protontricks, I use the shortcut I've got from my Start Menu and run it. There should be an option for the game ("Islands of Insight: 2071500" for example), select it and Click OK. Select the default wineprefix. Do not make a new one, since the current one is already been set up by Steam's Proton. Messing with the wineprefix that way will lead to unexpected results. Select "Install a Windows DLL or component" and Click OK. Select only two DLLs:
- d3dx9 (responsible for running DirectX9 Components)
- vcrun2022 (responsible for running C++ Components)
If any of these options do not appear on the list, then the link between protontricks and Steam's Proton has been set up incorrectly. Upon this case, I cannot be of help, since these instructions should get you to the right direction. Click OK, wait for a while to have warnings appear about forcefully installing these DLLs and make sure to go through with it, by forcefully installing both of them. Both will take like 10 seconds or so to install. If any of them fail to install, Steam's Proton might have unexpected errors, recommended to reinstall the Proton version. Once both are installed correctly, you can exit out of protontricks and re-open the game! If you've followed these steps correctly, this should get you into the Main Menu and after a long wait of loading and a bit of freezing, it should get you to the game!
The main problem with the Proton right now, is that there isn't a call from Steam to install these dependencies automatically. Hope it helps.
Tras tocar algunos ajustes, desactivé la opción de escalado. Al hacerlo todo se arregló.
FPS significativamente bajos 10-20 FPS
After switch to Proton GE Islands of Insights did run just fine
Tried several troubleshooting steps including lowering graphics, installing c++ and d3dx9 through winetricks, and running in desktop
d3dx9
Other people have gotten it working, my best guess is it's an EAC issue but don't know if that would make it load main menu but crash on loading after hitting play
Did not work with minimal effort
I do not know how to make manual compatibility tweaks, but with default settings clicking play from the main menu will freeze on the loading screen and require a force restart
Threw a few errors, installed C++ runtime, still didn't work.
Had to install C++ runtime, still didn't work :|
Using anything other than steam isn't really easy in any way, so I can't even try that... Even tried changing some arguments of Proton, but I don't know much when it comes to that. Good luck playing!
Turned all graphic options to low. Turned motion blur off. Otherwise there are frequent crashes
Would sometimes crash when applying new graphics settings
The game would load forever on the Wayland WM I use, so I had to switch to something based on X11. The change coincided with a reboot, so I don't know if I just needed that, or if the change to X fixed it.
Steam fails to install DirectX and will get stuck on "Launching". To fix this, I used protontricks 2561990 d3dx9
(this will work for the open playtest only, for the released game you would use protontricks 2071500 d3dx9
)
The game frequently fails to register mouse clicks after starting. Switching workspace and changing between windowed and fullscreen eventually fixes it
This is for the Open Playtest of the game since the game isn't released yet as of the writing of this report.
According to SteamDB (https://steamdb.info/app/2561990/depots/) the game requires VC 2022 Redist and DirectX Jun 2010 Redist. Normally those are provided by Steamworks Common Redistributables but it seems to not be working correctly at the moment.
The easiest way to install them is the run protontricks like so: protontricks 2561990 d3dx9 vcrun2022
Or if you prefer winetricks, make sure you're in the pfx directory for the game (/home/{your_username}/{your_steam_path}/steamapps/compatdata/2561990/pfx) directory run winetricks: winetricks d3dx9 vcrun2022
