-screen-fullscreen 0
Without the "-screen-fullscreen 0" launch argument, you just get a mostly black screen with a little graphic at the bottom. With the argument, the game runs perfectly fine. It even runs in full screen...
Installed DX9 from the Anno 1404 directory. (./SteamApps/Anno\ 1404/DirectX/DXSETUP.exe
).

Fails due to anti-cheat
Launching the game is fine, but even entering training does not work - you get a message saying that the anti-cheat is either not running or failed to authenticate.
Extreme performance issues initially, but after a while the game runs smoothly
Does not run unless you change the wine prefix to Window XP, after which the game can start. There are major performance issues if fsync is enabled, so make sure to set PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1
Proton Experimental was required, did not start with default proton. Other than that, it seems to run fine, in either DirectX or Vulkan mode.
Most of my testing was in Vulkan mode, though.
Steam fails to install DirectX and will get stuck on "Launching". To fix this, I used protontricks 2561990 d3dx9
(this will work for the open playtest only, for the released game you would use protontricks 2071500 d3dx9
)
The game frequently fails to register mouse clicks after starting. Switching workspace and changing between windowed and fullscreen eventually fixes it
Microstutters, which can affect gameplay. Otherwise runs great
Microstutters ever now and then. Can cause you to hit notes too late or (very rarely) it registers as you letting go during a hold note.
Works practically perfectly
Graphics sometimes take a while to load, but that seems to be a problem with the game in general, not a Proton problem.
Note that I could not login with the default settings. I had to change the renderer to Vulkan (default is DX11). After that, the game ran perfectly.
Proton Version: 5.13-5
You might have to set the renderer to Vulkan in the in-game options to prevent some stuttering, but the game runs otherwise flawlessly.
Out-of-the-box experience on older hardware is not good
The game uses over 3.5GB of VRAM out of the box. My card only has 4GB available, which is not enough with a few other things in the background, like a browser or Discord.
On older or lower-end hardware with less VRAM available, the game is almost unplayable out of the box.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%
With the launch options to use WINED3D, the game runs perfectly fine. Without that, it uses a LOT more VRAM and might struggle to run properly on older hardware.
Startup flags: -dx11
Takes forever to load and I've had two crashes so far. One immediately after starting the game and another after creating a character. Running around in the world seems to work fine - no actual gameplay tested yet.
Make sure to use Proton 4.11 with fsync enabled (default). Crashes a lot with previous versions, but now works great out of the box.
Proton launch flag: PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1
The game seems to crash every now and again, but it quite rare
I installed the game with Proton 5.1-GE-2
. The initial menu was a completely black screen with just the language combobox visible. There was a button immediately to the right of that combobox. While the button was not visible, I was still able to click it and continue installation.
During installation, it complained that there were only 15GB of space left on the hard drive. Using the PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1
flag helped with that.
With that proton version, you get stuck on the main menu and can't log in. Changing proton version to 6.3-5 solved that issue.
