The game starts with a black screen, only the mousecursor is visible. Pressing the esc key several times will bring you to the game menu. Changing any the graphicsettings leads to a crash. The game runs with the standardsettings but looks really ugly.
Runs with minor problems
Only the reboot edition worked on my system. The older classic version did not run.
When you start the game you'll just get black screen because of a problem regarding the playback of the introvideo. This can be skiped by pressing ESC two times.
On systems with an AMD GPU the latest stable MESA Drivers and the ACO compilerbackend should be used for optimal performance.
I have tested the game after switching form an NVIDIA GPU to the AMD RX 590. The game is playable at low and standard graphics preset at 1080p on my System using Proton 4.2.2. I had to select the Direct x 11 API to make the game work over DXVK. Selecting the Vulkan API in the game settings produces an error when the game is lauched. This seems to be specific to the MESA RADV vulkandrivers, because i now the vulkanrenderer works for linuxusers utilizing an NVIDIA GPU.
DirectX 11 should be used for better performance and to avoid artifacts.
To run this game with good performance your system must at least match the recommended systemrequirements on the storepage. Performance with SteamPlay is lower than on Windows. The game needs lots of RAM (16GB) and VRAM (6-8GB) even on 1080p with medium quality.
Proton GE (latest release) should be used. Otherwise the ingame movies won't play and you get stuck in gameprogress.
The game has massive problems when it comes to multiplayermode. This is not related to SteamPlay/Proton but a general issue. I you encounter connection errors you should use a VPN. I use Zerotier-One to play this and other problematic titels online.
Runs out of the box
This game runs best out of the box on my machine with maximum graphics in 1080p. Since this is an DirectX 9c title it is using WineD3D for graphicstranslation. You can run it with D9VK to. But that causes some stuttering unless i also turn on the ACO Compiler.
This game runs out of the box with Proton Experimental. Even the thirdparty gamelauncher works now as intended.
The game runs out of the box
ACO Compiler and shaderprecaching should be enabled for a smooth performance.
Runs out of the box
To start the game the game the option Play Grim Dawn (X64) must be selected.
For the best performance on systems with an AMD GPU the latest stable MESA drivers should be used.
The ACO compiler should be activated on systems with an AMD GPU using the following startcommand in steam: RADV_PERFTEST=aco %command%
The game runs out of the box
Gamepadvibration does not work
Works generally well out of the box with Proton Experimental in Direct X12 mode.
If Direct X11 is used i experienced screenflickering in some locations of the game. This flickering is not present in Direct X12 mode, but i experienced some graphical glitches whenever text is displayed or while i am in menu.
Stuttering and short hangs for the first 2-3 minutes after loading a new level when Direct X11 is used for rendering. Direct X12 worked flawless at maxed out settings regarding the performance of the game.
The game should run flawless out of the box even on older hardware.
AMD GPU owners should use the latest stable MESA Drivers and activate the ACO Compiler with the following startoption in steam:
RADV_PERFTEST=aco %command%
The game works out of the box without any configuration. However in noticed the following problems.
Complete freezing of the game after leaving the first planet. So i can't continue my gameplay.
Graphical glitches (red and blue "pixelsquares" appearing and disappearing) in the open terrain and on objects like rocks plants
Mousecursor is moving very slow in game menus compared to the actual gameplay
The game runs out of the box. However for AMD GPU Owners the enjoyment is limited because of the graphical glitches
Red and blue "pixelsquares". This problem seems specific to AMD GPU's using the MESA Drivers.
Enabling the ACO Compiler and shaderprecaching results in better performance.
The game runs out of the box with Proton experimental. No launchoptions or tinkering required.
Controller (XBox One compatible Naconcontroller) also worked out of the box with steaminput enabled and disabled. Game runs without stuttering or graphical glitches at maxed out settings.
Very good performance if the new Vulkanrenderer is used. The missing minimap is a problem but the game is still playable
This problems occurred with the new experimental Vulkanrenderer:
- Massive flickering when antialiasing is active
- Minimap does not display
To run the games new Vulkanrenderer with an AMD GPU utilizing the opensource MESA Drivers the latest stable MESA release should be installed. Users on a ubuntubased distribution should therefore add this ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~kisak/+archive/ubuntu/kisak-mesa
For optimal performance the ACO Compiler should be activated with this startoption in steam:
RADV_PERFTEST=aco %command%
The Game finally runs without major performance issues for the first time.
To get the best possible performance with Proton the Vulkanrenderer must be selected in the graphics settings.
The latest stable Nvidiadriver Release or the latest stable MESA Driver Release (at least MESA 2.1.2) must be installed to run the game without graphical glitches.
AMD GPU owners using the MESA Drivers should add the following startoption to the game for maximum performance: RADV_PERFTEST=aco %command%
The game is unplayable right now because of Easy Anticheat
The game worked before i did a reinstall of my system. After the installation the game now uses the new EA Launcher instead of Origin. The game launches but then complains about EAC not running.
The game runs out of the box. However to get rid of the graphical glitches i had to use D9vk by entering the command: PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command% as a startoption.
Nothing happened as i tried to launch the game. This seems to happen because the game utilizes easy-anticheat.
gamemoderun %command%
Like Borderlands 3 this game has problems when a strict NAT is used by the ISP. We had to use a VPN to connect to each other. This is not related to linux.
The game gains performance with PCI-E Resizeable Bars (AMD-SAM) enabled.
The Game runs out of the box
Using the ACO Compiler results in better performance and eliminates the stuttering. Shaderprecaching also helps with the performance.
