Audio does not work, however this can be fixed with the WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command%
launch options.
Steam does not register that the game has closed and will show you as playing it until you close Steam entirely.
Use the following launch option otherwise textures don't load in properly and are very blocky. There is occasional stuttering, but is completely playable.
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% -nointro
Installed dotnet40 and vcrun2015. Did not test without.
Had to click play a couple times to get it to launch but after a couple tries, it now works just fine.
Disabling Esync increases performance. Tested at 1080p on Ultra, inside of a hangar. With esync, I get 80-87 fps with no single number being stable. Without it, I get 113 fps, very stable.
After installing dotnet40 and vcrun2015 with winetricks/protontricks, there are no issues. Tested with Horizons dlc: online play along with the training and challenge scenarios work fine. I have not run across any issues. Keep esync on. It increases performance. On: 110fps, Off: 79fps.
You need to install dotnet40 and vcrun2015 through Wine/Protontricks but after that, everything, including hud mods, works fine. The game and launcher both take their sweet time when launching, but Steam's new precaching reduces loading time significantly once launched. ----- If you want to use external tools using your journal file, the folder is not generated. Create it manually: ".../compatdata/359320/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Saved Games/Frontier Developments/Elite Dangerous"
Note: VR DOES NOT WORK. However, the base game along with Horizons works perfectly, given you use wine/protontricks to install 'dotnet40' and 'win7'. Even reshade works!
This is a quick follow up to the rating below that states that VR doesn't work. I was wrong. I do not know why it didn't work before, but it does now. Otherwise:
Install dotnet40 and maybe win7 through wine/protontricks, then the game will run flawlessly in VR and not. Horizons tested.
Very poor performance makes this game completely unplayable at higher settings and lower settings are almost unplayable.
Extremely poor performance across all settings. At the bare minimum settings, I was achieving about 20 fps at 1080p.
The game may randomly crash before reaching the "Made with Unity" splash screen but is otherwise stable after that point.
Graphical settings do not persist between launches. I do not know if this is a game issue or a Proton issue.
At the minimum settings, object pop-in is an extreme issue, making it very difficult to see the objective until you quite literally run into it. I believe this is likely an issue with the game instead of Proton.
Runs flawlessly but with performance degradation during very long sessions, especially when loading multiple maps.
There is slight performance degradation during multi-hour play sessions, particularly if you are loading multiple maps throughout the session.
During extended play sessions (multi-hour), particularly if loading multiple maps during the session, there is some performance degradation.
While the VR mod does function on AMD cards, it does not yet work on Nvidia. This is because OpenXR is not yet working fully on Nvidia. A game which has very similar issues but officially supports VR is Microsoft Flight Simulator, so I would personally recommend watching for changes related to that game.
Can get through the loading screen, but after that I am just left with music and a cursor on a black screen.
Running the latest (Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF) GloriousEggroll version of Proton, the game runs flawlessly.
Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF
When the game works, it works perfectly, but when the game loads new scenes, it likes to crash.
I have crashed twice with both with "SteamVR Failures" and once with a complaint about the SteamVR version despite being on the latest beta.
Crashes only happen when the game is loading new scenes.
Runs flawlessly out of the box. No tweaks needed.
With 4GB of vram, my 980 occasionally runs into issues where it simply runs out of vram and both SteamVR and the game crash simultaneously. This isn't a knock against the game though since I am below the minimum spec of 6GB vram.
I manage to maintain acceptable fps in almost all cases, despite my hardware being below minimum requirements, running low settings.
The game has pretty minor audio crackling that's really only noticeable when the game's quiet.
- Setting
default-sample-rate = 48000
in/etc/pulse/daemon.conf
(and maybe in~/.config/pulse/daemon.conf
) then restarting pulseaudio withpulseaudio -k
manages to solve this issue. This fix does not appear to work for everyone, though.
I've never seen the geometry of objects bug out, but others have and I have been randomly launched out of the level once.
- Regardless of hardware, there appears to be an issue maintaining 90 or 144fps while in game. I still manage to have played 12 hours of the game, so it's not that bad.
- When I look at an activated upgrade station, my game gets really choppy. This issue does not happen with deactivated stations.
- Starting at some point in the game, the weapon menu starts to cause the game to lag while in view.
The game crashes on any form of loading. Some examples are loading into a new level, loading a save after dying or just from the menu while in game, or exiting to the main menu.
- I've found that saving, reloading the game, and immediately jumping into the loading screen does work around this. Others here have confirmed this.
See the Proton GitHub issue for this game for more information. This link is my report on the game's state, summarizing from the reports of others and my own experience with the game. https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/3681#issuecomment-605364486
Game "runs". It renders and all, but is incredibly slow and does not appear in my headset.
Everything works perfectly. There is a very rare situation where the map disappears, but I do not think this is because of Proton.
Runs perfectly once again. Do not have the ability to test controller support.
