Used dmc4_downgrade from https://github.com/serpentiem/ddmk#devil-may-cry-4
The game launches in windowed, it will continue to work when you switch it to fullscreen. But relaunching the game in the fullscreen will cause the game to hang.
Was unable to get the game working until I downgraded the geme executable to the older version. Downgrade is avalible at (https://github.com/serpentiem/ddmk#devil-may-cry-4). Game tested and works on proton version to 7.0-6 and GE-Proton 7-5.
Wouldn't reccomend that you fullscreen the game. At first works fine, but at game relaunch the game hangs. You can fix this by editing config file located at (SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/329050/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/CAPCOM/DEVILMAYCRY4SPECIALEDITION/config.ini), and changing FullScreen option to OFF (FullScreen=OFF).

The game runs great
I was able to beat the whole game start to finish without encountering a singe crash or performance related bugs. No thinkering was requiered.
Had to install: Visual Studio C++ Redistributable (https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vc_redist.x64.exe) and DirectX June 2010 Redistributable (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109).
First time the game launched it was only black screen. After installing Visual Studio C++ Redistributable and DirectX June 2010 Redistributable with protontricks tha game launches and runs great.
Game runs great
Game worked out of the box. Steam cloud save as well as cross save with Android work.
Works great.
Played 2 and 3 player co-op game. Had no problems.
Had a problem where game would run at 24 FPS, fixed it by setting the game to "Fullscreen" and changing "Fullscreen Display" option to "Auto-Detect (Exclusive)", after that the game runs at 60 FPS.

The game refused to launch on onything other than Proton7. I found that proton GE-7-51 works the best and even the intro cinematic play without any problems. The menu's worked fine but when I would enter the match the whole screen would be green. After I used protontricks to install Visual Studio C++ Redistributable and DirectX June 2010 Redistributable the green screen problem went away and game plays perfectly.
