Like a native game... that's it!
Smooth experience, no problems and even better performance than on Windows.
Minor issues with full-screen mode
I'm having a bit of trouble getting out of full-screen mode because the focus remains on the game, and I have to open the steam-overlay to take control of my mouse on my computer, but this is a minor problem.
Game crash at launch
When trying to launch the game I'm having the following issue:
dxgi.dll caused an Access Violation (0xc0000005)
in module dxgi.dll at 0023:7853a936.
I haven't found a workaround, so the game is unplayable for me on Linux via Proton.
Some tutorials containing a video showing the player how to play may cause the game to crash.
Once the proton version has been changed, the game is as fluid as on Windows or even better! Otherwise, the game doesn't launch at all.
Last update after some problems with my linux installation
Linux support for HumanFallFlat has been discontinued since 2018 (source). You can run the game without Proton, but it will be an old/outdated version. In order to have an up-to-date version, you need to force Proton Experimental for this game.

Works perfectly without any modification
Tested and recommanded with proton db experimental, the default recommended by steam
OPENSSL_ia32cap=:~0x20000000 %command%
Pleasant to play once the launch options have been configured; if they're missing, the game won't start.
Smooth experience on Linux
The game runs smoothly and without any particular problems!
