Very minor crackling here and there, but not too noticable.
After playing the game for around an hour/hour and a half, the game stutters insanely when moving camera (either with mouse or keyboard). This might be affecting some other games and it seems to be specifically games on steam. The fix apperently is to add the 'LD_PRELOAD=""' variable in the launch options. Didn't seem to experience that weird stuttering issue afterwards. Might be fixed later after this review.
I recommend these workshop mods in this load order:
- Ninja
- Gothic 1 Community Patch
- Union - patch for Gothic 1
- GD3D11
- GRawInput (mouse fix)
There's only 1 annoying bug I noticed where an NPC who is interacting with some object (example: a book stand), can't be interacted with. Easily fixed with quicksaving and quickloading though.
Overall, works very good with these mods and a few tweaks to config files.

Works well after getting past the initial startup crashes, used Union with the community patch otherwise cutscenes don't scale properly.

Had to install directmusic
Game would crash on startup until going into Gothic.ini and enabling zStartupWindowed=1

With the Correct Proton version it Runs just like the Game runs, If you know gothic you know it usual bugs, on windows.
I tried multiple Proton versions but only 6.3-8 worked completely.
With this Version even ninja mods run, although I did not test it for a longer time with the Mods, so install them at your own risk.

Run command protontricks 65540 directmusic.
After Alt-tabing performance drops untill you restart the game
As other people stated, audio and cutscenes are scuffed/not working from the get-go. And do what https://www.protondb.com/app/65540#IbnQnPXJB4 says (I didn't do step 5 and everything worked fine, step 3 is in the System command line/shell, not Steam) and I do heavily recommend installing the mods (especially quick loot is a god savior).

Installed and and ran ProtonTricks FlatPak. Ran Gothic once to populate in game list. Then installed Windows DLL Component DirectMusic.
Selected the 'WorkShop' version from the Betas menu. Subscribed to the following Workshop items: Union, Ninja, Gothic 1 Community Patch, and GD3D11. Selected 'Play with Mod Launcher', and ran the game from the next menu. No crashes and no graphical or audio bugs.

There are several issues that I personally had to address, including audio, crashing and videos without tinkering.
Here are the steps to fix EVERYTHING (as I did it):\
- Change the beta branch to [workshop], set default launch option as [Play mod launcher].
- Run at least once; close immediately.
- Run command
protontricks 65540 directmusic
. - Go to your prefix in compatdata; should find a file named
user.reg
, open it in a text editor. - Find line with
[Software\\Wine\\DllOverrides]
and add the following under it:"ddraw"="native, builtin"
**Also remove this line:**"*dsound"="native"
\ - Install the following mods:\
- Union
- Ninja
- Gothic 1 Community Patch
- Mss32.dll
- Game should now work properly, somehow.
Optional (QoL)
- Install GRawInput: https://github.com/SaiyansKing/GRawInput/releases
With all this done, I had not experienced any issues. It should all work properly now, this way.

Random freezes/crashes on saving the game. Happens on average every 5-7 saves.
Random freezes/crashes on saving the game. Happens on average every 5-7 saves.

With regular Proton 9, everything works flawlessly out of the box. No tinkering required, workshop mods work as expected too

You have to start it on its own desktop with no other programs open.
Cutscenes and prologue dont work.

Render buffer is not cleared, every frame that was displayed stays on screen.
Long Wait on black screen until game starts, ca 10 min
Might work better with some patience. I know that it used to work normally and out of the box at some point last year without any tinkering.

You will need protontricks to get Gothic 1 running and a compatibility setting
- Install Gothic 1
- Go into Properties>General tab and set launch option to
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw=n,b" PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command%
3.. Download and add GE-Proton9-1 release into your /home/user/.steam/steam/compatibilitytools.d directory, restart steam
Go into game properties compatibility tab and check Force the use of the specific game compatibility tool with GE-Proton9-1
Run the game once, it will crash.
Install protontricks.
In terminal run
protontricks 65540 directmusic
- You are good, took me a while. 3.WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw=n,b" PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command%
No music, constant crashes with a weird error if no directmusic is installed via protontricks and you need to put WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw=n,b" PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command% in order to get the game running
Game crashes without following the steps provided, took me a day and a bunch of research with different proton versions to get it running.

Realy low FPS and fps drops
wideo cut scenes need 2 clics on ESC

;( But Chronicals of Myrhana work wery well

added "directmusic" support as of this description. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3040963454
In case you are using the flatpak version of protontricks, use this command to install directmusic in a fresh prefix (= created after first start of the game):
flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks 65540 directmusic
open the game config file ~/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/common/Gothic/system/gothic.ini
and change the screen resolution (zVidResFullscreenX, zVidResFullscreenY) to suitable values, as the in-game settings may not work.
Be sure to check/reset te keyboard mapping
No background music without installing "directmusic" with protontricks.
in-game video resolution could not be set. Change manually in ~/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/common/Gothic/system/gothic.ini
It's worth the tweaks.

Обов'язково треба встановити "Union patch" та обрати "Proton 7.0-6" щоб комфортно грати
Без "Union patch" та "Proton 7.0-6" гра буде вибивати помилку "Access Violation"

I had a problem once i have changed the default game rezolution, that seting crashed my x11 and display one did not rendered anything even the OS until idiscovered i can connect to display 2 and revert to defalt setings
Sliding any inclines more than ~15deg ~to my eye

The music was missing. I had to Install directmusic using protontricks.
I used this collection: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2912196813 It works straight out of the box (Set Gothic beta version to "workshop" and Install the game first). To fix the music in-game Install Protontricks, start it, follow the instructions to activate Protontricks then start it>Gothic 1>Select the default wineprefix>Install a Windows DLL or component>directmusic Lastly: Open "~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/65540/pfx/user.reg" file and delete *dsound"="native". Save and close
Always run the game using the mod launcher.
Enjoy!

I'm using a steam workshop modules launcher and I have a "Union" mod installed to be able to run and play the game.
Videos didn't worked. I can hear only sound. Anyway, it's only a intro video.

Download dgVoodoo from PCGmaesWiki copy files from 3dfx/x86 and MS/x86 folders to System folder in your Gothic installation location.
That is all works like a dream

I changed Proton version to an older one, because I can't start the game in GothicStarter window. The "Play the Game" button is clickable, but nothing happens after clicking it. Older version of Proton looks more buggy because there no game description, but game runs fine.
According to the guide in the styme I added various modifications. Video music all works great. Problems with the game was not noticed.
had to change resolution in ini file, before I got a mod for that
game is very janky and really requires mods to be enjoyable in 2022. workshop version (from properties -> beta -> workshop) makes an easy way to install the "necessary" mods
To play the game without graphical glitches one option is to use dg Voodoo2 as reported by other users but an easier option is to use Workshop mods.
To enable them go in the game properties in Steam: Properties/Beta/Select the Workshop beta, then go to the Workshop and subscribe to GD3D11 mod. This is compatible with any other mod so feel free to customise your experience (there are several UI mods to help you playing this old game).
To start the game from now on launch the Mod Lancher, make sure the GD3D11 mod is on top of the list.
Once in the game choose a 32bit resolution in Settings/Video (e.g. 1280x720x32, scroll to the left to find them).
Requires tinkering but it's not hard to do since most of the steps are just installing something from the marketplace
Followed the guide: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2859395593
Forced to 5 TDP, framerate is capped to 40
Text is a bit hard to read but fine overall
Finished the whole game without any bugs or crashes. It controls and plays great with gamepad support! Just follow the linked guide and enjoy this timeless classic.

Missing music fixed with installing directmusic via protontricks
If one doesn't mind missing music and cutscenes, it works out of the box
Multiple steps are needed to play it well on a steamdeck : https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2859395593
40FPS limit, 5W limit
Game plays perfectly after using the linked Steamguide. After these actions you have working background music, cutscenes and proper gamepad controls.
Cutscenes and music are missing. Higher resolutions cause the game to not start (it gets stuck trying to enter fullscreen). I had to combine fixes from a few different reports to get the fully playable experience:
- set your language in Gothic's Steam properties
- after fresh install run
WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/65540/pfx/ winetricks directmusic
in the terminal to fix missing music - edit zVidResFullscreenX and zVidResFullscreenY keys in system/Gothic.ini file to get a higher resolution
- optionally install dgvoodo2 and set launch options to
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8,d3d9,d3dimm,ddraw=n" %command%
, if you really want the ingame cutscenes

Cutscenes are not shown without the use of dgVoodoo2
Without dgVoodoo2 to port the game from Direct3D 8 to Direct3D 11 and thus make use of DXVK there are no cutscenes.
Install dgVoodoo2 as described here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxqvRO2AMyU
Used protontricks to install the following Windows component/dlls:
- directmusic
Locked 30 FPS
Most ingame text is generally small due to the UI scaling with the resolution
Needed to use protontricks to fix music not playing
Videos are not working but this has been an issue with Gothic on modern systems generally. Installing the system pack from https://www.worldofgothic.com/ could fix this, but I haven't tested this yet on Steam Deck.
The following components are checked in protontricks: dmband, dmcompos, dmime, dmloader, dmscript, dmstyle, dmsynth, dmusic, dmusic32, dsound
The game might be missing ist video sequences and its soundtrack but can totally played without any apparent issues.
With the default Proton settings you need to deactivate the Steam Overlay or you will get some weird artifacts.
The Grip Buttons are a handy way to enter Inventory, Skills, Quest log and a Map shortcut.
Bind Enter to Button A, Escape to Button B und the Arrow Keys to the D-Pad and you can get easily through the initial Menus.
Most ingame text in conversations and windows is a bit small at the Decks default resolution.
Background music is missing entirely.
On the Steam Deck you can use Proton-7.0rc3-GE-1 to restore video sequences but it will break screen resolution on every startup and camera controls seem totaly borked. As the game was made with keyboard in mind you will have to tinker a lot with its controls to make it playable with the Decks controlls.
