Runs out of the box just like on windows.
There are some crashes sometimes when launching a map, but these happen on windows too and aren't related to proton whatsoever.
Performance is identical to windows. I didn't encounter any significant bugs that were specific to linux while playing.
There is a small border around the screen when running in borderless fullscreen. Apparently going fullscreen crashes the game when launching the game afterwards but I didn't test that.
Linux actually has one advantage compared to windows in this game. On linux, you can choose which microphone the game uses, on windows, you are stuck with whatever is the first one on the list, selecting a different one in settings does not change which the game uses. This caused some issues for me on windows due to helldivers using a mic that was not working.
MANGOHUD=1 %command%
On AMD GPUs, fullscreen only works after the game already started. If you start the game when it's set to fullscreen, it won't run. This issue isn't present on NVIDIA GPU, driver version 535.
Borderless fullscreen has a small border. Not too distracting but it's strange that it's present.
Sometimes, the mouse can escape the game if you have multiple monitors.
Not perfect, but it's perfectly playable.
Works just fine on linux. Even videos work without any changes. No need for Proton GE either.
I saw no issues playing this. My laptop heats up a lot playing this game, but I assume that's just the game not because of Linux.
Works just as well on Linux as it does on Windows.
Once the launch options and controller layout are set, the game works fine and I did not encounter any issues.
WINE_DO_NOT_CREATE_DXGI_DEVICE_MANAGER=1 %command%
Set X and Y to scrolling, set arrow up and down for scrolling, set left arrow to E (to switch to english), right arrow to J (to switch to japanese)
Game does not seem to handle 16:10 aspect ratio very well. While reading it is fine, but some menus are cut off, buttons hidden at the edge of the screen, and saving beyond save 10 is impossible due to the arrows being outside of the screen. This issue is solved using the launch options and forcing the game to run at 720p 16:9 aspect ratio.
WINE_DO_NOT_CREATE_DXGI_DEVICE_MANAGER=1 gamescope -h 1080 -w 1920 -F fsr -- %command%
Fullscreen tries to stretch itself to fit the entire monitor, which causes the menu buttons to go outside of the monitor on aspect ratios that aren't 16:9.
If you are not on a 16:9 aspect ratio monitor, try the launch options I use. It will make the game run at 1920x1080, then upscale it to your monitor resolution with FSR1. If the game does not open in fullscreen upon launch, press Meta + f.
I had no issues when playing this game.
Works perfectly on modern versions of proton. No tweaks, no custom proton, everything works fine.
As long as you play in fullscreen and don't reveal the top panel, everything will be fine, but I personally wouldn't recommend it to others.
Showing the top panel (by pressing alt or moving your cursor up) causes the game to glitch out. If you do this too much on KDE Plasma it can even crash your entire desktop.
Fullscreen works fine, but on windowed absolutely not. The window flashes between black and white. The game kind of works so setting the game to fullscreen is possible. The flickering is capable of crashing the desktop as well.
Sometimes when the game crashes the desktop, it will refuse to start again until I restart the whole computer.
Unlike other reports, on proton GE you don't need to install wmp11 for movies to work. At least I didn't need to.
The short video that shows the madosoft logo might sometimes freeze the game if you try to skip it. This video only works with Proton GE.
I recommend using ProtonGE since it made the videos work. The game seems to work fine without it though.
Works out of the box. No errors, good performance.
Steam cloud does not work with the flatpak version of steam.
Set TDP limit to 3W.
The game works fine on the steam deck. The input is a bit awkward in my opinion. I couldn't figure out how to use my quickslots, so I use the touchscreen for that. Overall I enjoy playing it though.
If you don't mind the small lags when the game is still loading, then you should be fine.
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command%
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC is supposed to fix this but it didn't completely remove it for me. Setting the value to 90 worked the best though.
This issue disappears after a bit of loading, just like the lags.
Even with PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC there are still lags when the game starts or when you load a map. After 30-60 seconds those disappear.
Also when selecting scenarios, they load incredibly slow, I usually have to wait 2 minutes for the menu to appear.
Everything works fine afterwards though.
I think you are better off just running it on windows for now. It's playable but not an enjoyable experience.
In the main menu there are some audio issues. They fix themselves when you wait a bit.
Can get very laggy at times. Not sure if it's because of my hardware or due to proton.
Multiplayer is a huge pain. Crashes randomly. Especially when approaching foreign structures or during FPS drops. Most of the crashes happen during loading though. Once you are inside, then you will usually be fine.
Seems like the modifications others are mentioning aren't necessary anymore, but I still wouldn't recommend it.
I encountered no issues while playing this game.
Works just as well on Linux as it does on Windows.
