If you don't mind a messed up audio, the game runs perfectly fine
The games audio would randomly turn into an unpleasant mess of white noise and 8-bit like sounds for a couple of seconds and then return to normal again, which it does several times per minute. The game has a great soundtrack, which to me is an integral part of the gameplay to set the mood, so this issue makes it kinda unbearable for me to play it. I have not experienced this issue a couple of years ago on the same OS with very similar hardware, so a recent update of the game might have messed something up?
First and second game are playable without any issues. The third game doesn't start and only shows a blackscreen.
Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped is unfortunately unplayable as you are greeted with an infinite blackscreen when trying to start the game. The menu will still work during this though. Tried with all available version of Proton without any luck.
Runs very well with minor issues
The game may show a blackscreen that doesn't go away when entering specific levels. The reason for this is actually the path length of the installation folder as after creating a simple SteamLibrary folder in my /home/ directory and moving the game files to it solved the blackscreen issues.
If you want to use a controller and have the same problems as I do, you want have much fun navigating through the menus
Proton-5.9-GE-8-ST GloriousEggroll
Getting this game to work was a nightmare. I installed Proton-5.9-GE-8-ST and set it as default compatibility tool for the game. I was able to install Origin, but nothing happened afterwards. I followed the guide on https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/4234#issuecomment-724983058 and put the python script in the protonfixes directory. After it installed some things, it got to the fifa launcher menu. I changed some settings and closed the launcher (as nothing would happen if I clicked Play) and added the line DIRECTX_SELECT=1 line to the fifasetup.ini file. Then I opened the config.ini file (you can find this one in your SteamLibrary folder where Fifa 21 was installed: FIFA 21/FIFAsetup) changed the line LAUNCH_EXE = fifa21.exe to LAUNCH_EXE = FIFA21.exe (apparently works better in caps) and added the line AUTO_LAUNCH = 1 to disable the launcher. I was then finally able to play it... mostly.
Navigating through the menu is the worst thing ever. For whatever reason the game thinks I have two controllers installed (Even though I am just using one) and constantly switches between two menu items without me even touching my controller. Once you figure out the timing and manage to start a game, it runs flawlessly. During the actual gameplay I haven't had any issues with my controller. I suspect that the game thinks that the RGB controller on my motherboard is an actual controller, causing the menu spasms. So it seems I am alone with this problem. Gosh darn it, ASRock.
Proton-6.19-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.19-GE-2
Needed to unplug and replug my XBox 360 Controller as it would result in the menu always thinking I am pressing the analog stick down, which makes it annoying to navigate. After replugging the controller the issue is gone.
Game needs to be set to use DX11 instead of DX12, else the game might crash frequently. Go to the Wineprefix (ID 1506830, Users/steamuser/Documents/FIFA 22) and change the value "DIRECTX_SELECT" in fifasetup.ini from 0 to 1 (DIRECTX_SELECT = 1)
WINEPREFIX=/path/to/SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/271590/pfx winetricks vcrun2019
Out of memory errors after about 20-30 minutes of playing
If you want to run this game with mods, make sure to install vcrun2019 with winetricks
Proton-6.10-GE-1
Custom Music does not work and some .wma files do not play, but it's mostly fine
The game would crash with a "Wine c++ assertion failed" error 2 minutes into starting the game. No launch flag could improve this situation.
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
Please ignore the post I made before this. PROTON_LOG=1 saves the day yet again. I have no idea why, but setting it as a launch flag caused the wine c++ assertion failure errors to disappear completely and the game was playable without any issues. Caught attention to this flag when I remembered how I solved a problem with GTA V constantly crashing using it. It just works and I have no idea why. I'm happy nonetheless.
An unoptimized mess that is still close to my heart. Most issues are caused by the game itself rather than Linux or Proton.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
When entering CAS, the Sim would turn invisible after 5-10 seconds paired with other graphical glitches and stuttering, making it impossible to continue with editing the sim. Setting the launch flag above is crucial to avoid this issue.
You might encounter a memory error while trying to save a world that has bloated up over time playing it, making it impossible to save your current household at all. NraasSaver is a good mod for reminding you to save often and create backups to atleast somewhat circumvent the issue if you wanna continue with the same save file. The problem seems to stem from the 32-bit architecture of the game itself, as it can't access more than 3.5GB of RAM and if it needs any more than that during the saving process, it aborts and throws a memory error. So technically this might happen under Windows as well, but I can't say for certain.
Sometimes crashes do happen with big households and cities with lots of sims and objects. They tend to be random, but happen very rarely.
The game runs as well as it can on Linux as it would on Windows. I didn't have any issues with the launcher as it would pop up and funciton like normal upon starting the game. After quitting the game, the launcher hides in my system tray (KDE Plasma 6), but is restorable per rightclick and can be closed without any issues.
The game itself worked perfectly fine and ran as well as I remember it on Windows. Using the launch flag was crucial as sims would just turn invisible after some time without it. With it, I didn't experience any other graphical issues or anything of the like. Mods work without any issues as well.
The game is a lovable but unoptimized mess, so if you experience performance problems like occasional lags or stuttering even with very good hardware, don't blame your OS or Steam, that's just how the game's meant to be.
Runs perfectly out of the box with very minor issues
The game seldom crashes when a weapon hits while double damage is active
