Disable Esync and D3D9. Is definitely playable, but there are frame drops, and, rarely, crashes when loading areas. ~5 Hours playtime
Works great, tabbing out is broken.
Tabbing out makes the game window go black, and unplayable. This can be solved by playing in windowed mode.
I mean, getting into gameplay would be nice.
looks like its running at 1280x720 even though its set to 1920x1080 in graphics settings
Loops back to the main menu after the elevator pod cutscene.
Frame drops, looped back to the main menu after opening cutscene in the elevator pod thing.
Loops back to the main menu after the elevator pod cutscene.
It will refuse to start.
It requires its own special kernel driver as an anticheat. Good luck getting this to run.
Textures are locked at low.
Game is locked at low textures, for some reason..? Other options are greyed out in both the launcher and in game settings menu. Shame, good game that now looks garbage.
Game runs well. Though I guess it would be with textures locked at low. It seems to be a "feature" to stop people turning their graphics too high. Why? My GPU is above the reccomended specs for this game. Maybe Proton is misreporting hardware to the game? This only happened very recently.
Works fine out of the box. If you want to run fullscreen at non native resolutions, you need to use gamescope.
gamescope -f -w 2560 -h 1440 -W 3820 -H 2160 -U %command%
Fullscreen only works at native resolution. Use gamescope to use fullscreen at non-native resolutions.
To explain the launch arguments:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES='dinput8.dll=n,b'
to load the mod loader. Not included in the above snippet, but this is how you add it.
gamescope -f -w 2560 -h 1440 -W 3820 -H 2160 -U
:
-f
- true fullscreen
-w 2560 -h 1440
to tell the game to use an internal resolution of 2560x1440
-W 3820 -H 2160
to tell gamescope to scale up to use all screen space in fullscreen
-U
to use AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution for upscaling. The Nvidia equivalent is -Y
.

Runs amazingly out of the box. Turn on VSync though, as it hits upwards of 4,000 fps
gamemoderun %command%
Moving the mouse results in extreme stuttering (camera movement is fine, specifically moving the mouse causes extreme frame drops and game time to slow down)
Game would just randomly hang sometimes, no idea what causes it, sometimes I can play through 3 games in a row, other times it will hang 20 minutes in.
works fine on older version, but you can't alt tab (you can still access windows on second monitor)
-FastLaunch
Would often spawn on wrong monitor and need to manually move across
A lot of tinkering is required to get the game to launch, I had to step through a bunch of proton versions to get through the initial setup. It finally works after setup on Proton GE. I had to do the initial setup on a combination of Valve Proton 5.13, Proton-GE and 6.3.8, but I can't remember which proton version is required for each step. It did eventually work though.
You may get stuck on a black screen when you launch. This is due to a cursed DNS bug.

You may also need to install Microsoft fonts for your distro to be able to sign in to xbox live.
Also, be aware that the game downlaods 100+ GB during initial setup. If you buy this game solely for Linux, and are unable to get it working, you are not covered by Valve's two hour refund policy (unless your internet can download 100+ GB in under two hours lol)
Don't tab out or the game blackscreens and hangs.
Loading a savefile the first time the game starts up takes a little while (20s?). After that, it's fine.
6.10-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
disable steam overlay via right click -> properties. game crashes with it enabled. achievements, etc still work
Works perfectly, but you can't alt-tab out.
The game is always on top.
Runs fine. When objects are being loaded in, there are small artifacts. Otherwise, the game runs perfectly
Sometimes needs a little help to start.
When trees, etc are being loaded in, there are some fuzzy artifacts around it that eventually fade.
Alt Tab sometimes crashes the game.
Sometimes, the game crashes after showing the "Hello Games" splashscreen.
This can be circumvented by running steam from a terminal. No idea why this fixes it, but it does...
Game runs fine, apart from some heists that refuse to load. Overall, the game is very playable.
Using SuperBLT to use mods.
Launch command: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="wsock32=n,b" env PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%
you cant alt-tab out, the game is always on top (KDE, KWin). you can free the mouse cursor and move onto your second display however.
Some missions just randomly crash. I have absolutely no idea why, as no crash log gets generated on the proton version. Tried without mods, it just refuses to load some missions. Other missions require multiple tries to load into. One mission that crashes 100% of the time is the Four Stores hiest. (unfortunately, a required story hiest. you can continue to play other hiests afterwards, just no "story". Not too much of a loss, the story is incredibly loose.) Loading Hoxton's Safehouse also crashes (not to be confused with the normal safehouse)
However overall, the game is very much playable.
Go to the SteamLibrary folder where Payday 2 is installed. steamapps/compatdata/218620 >> make a file called dxvk.conf, and paste this in it:
[payday2_win32_release.exe]
d3d9.evictManagedOnUnlock = True
I am using SuperBLT to use mods, and mangohud. Launch command below.
PROTON_DXVK_ASYNC=1 PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="wsock32=n,b" mangohud %command% -skip_intro
gamemoderun PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="wsock32=n,b" %command% -skip_intro
Tabbing out will hang the game.
Edit this file:
SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/218620/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/PAYDAY 2/renderer_settings.xml
and set fullscreen to false.
Install this mod: https://modworkshop.net/mod/27683
Go to video options and click the text that says windowed (DON'T USE THE ARROWS, IT WILL HANG) and set it to fullscreen windowed.
Tabbing out hangs the game unless you edit the renderer_settings.xml
and install the mod as detailed.
Payday 2 is sort of infamous for being an unstable game, even on Windows, so I'm not sure if the crashes under Proton are anything out of the ordinary compared to Windows.
The DLL override is to load SuperBLT, the modloader for this game.
Follow these instructions: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/1538#issuecomment-529896867
Move the resultant DLL into the game directory, root level is fine.
Numbers are not readable until you do the DLL fix.
Works great
On the plant selection screen, the fps drops to around 10. As soon as gameplay starts its back up to 60fps.
Window dancing works perfectly on KDE Plasma. However, places where the window is intentionally supposed to be offscreen, the window stays on the boundary of the screen. However, this is more a minor outlier and something you won't notice unless pointed out to you.
Editing, etc works flawlessly. The real issue is exporting. The first few frames get rendered, then the recording sorta just... ends. An example is here
Fonts are a little hard to read
You can't render in higher quality then 720p, and you can only render an image sequence rather then a video, which just turns out black. The second issue is just a mild annoyance, but the 720p is :((
Runs perfectly
Known good on Proton 5.0-10, though other versions should also work fine
The game does not work at all. Native, Proton, their ""fixed linux beta branch"", their FAQ launch flags, nothing.
One in every 30~ launches the game starts fine. Otherwise, its completely unplayable and does not get past the splash screen. This game shouldn't be marked as native support lmfao. There's no useful output in the logs either.
GLIBC_TUNABLES=glibc.rtld.dynamic_sort=1 %command%
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/73967
Inconsistency with how depencencies are loaded. The above launch flag fixes the issue of launching being seemingly random.
