40fps / 40 hz + TDP 10
The Steam Deck can run the game at max graphics, but you will get a fluctuating fps between 48-60 depending on whats happening. Lock it to 40 fps / 40hz for stable fps + better battery life, and TDP = 10.
with max graphics and the fps cap, you are looking at around 3hs battery.
45 fps / 45hz & TDP 9
No need to tinker, just use the recommended proton (at the time of writing is proton 8-03) and play.
If you turn all the graphics settings at max, the game fluctuates between 45-60 fps, so lock fps to 45, set the refresh rate to 45hz, limit tdp to 9, and you should have a smooth experience that will allow you to complete the game in about 1 1/2 charges.
20fps/40hz, TDP -> 3, GPU clockspeed = 200
The game freezes after a minute or two after launching, forcing to kill the app
As of the time of writing all tested proton versions (stable 8.0, experimental, GE 9.2) allow the game to launch and play, as does the Native build. However, whatever version you use, the game will freeze up after one or two minutes of play, leaving you no choice but to kill the application.
TDP = 4w and GPU clock speed to 400hz. That is enough for the game to run at 60 fps
One time I loaded the game and the scene assets were gone. I changed the proton version and it got fixed.
using native deck aspect ratio (16:10) some menu options have a few letters off screen, but you get a bigger in-game screen for playing. On the flip side, changing the resolution to a 16:9 one will allow you to see the menu clearly, but with a smaller in-game screen. Doesn't hinder play either way.
Opening video in menu is corrupted when using native or regular proton. Switching to Proton-GE solves the issue.
TDP 6w
GOG version using ProtonGE through Heroic Games Launcher works out of the box
Game doesnt start with regular proton (a popup requesting the CD appears). GE works fine
Installed the GOG version of the game from Heroic Games Launcher. Using regular proton the game wouldn´t start, and a window appeared asking for the CD. Using proton GE the game started up fine and I was able to play. However the PC version of the game has horrible keybindings, and it didn't seem to register the controls of the deck with the gamepad template, so I used a community layout to remap the keyboard controls to the deck. Game worked flawlessly after that.
Play on desktop mode or it doesn't work
Game freezes up without recovery after a few minutes when playing on game-mode. Forces you to force-quit.
The game was made with an older renpy version that has a known bug when you try to play on game mode on the steam deck, which causes the game to freeze after a few minutes and forces you to force quit the app. This happens using both the native build and the windows one with proton (any version).
The only workaround (besides developers updating the game) is to play directly on desktop mode, which allows the game to work with no issues (though you lose all the battery optimization settings from gamescope).
The in game menu is small and hard to read in the steam deck (you can use the magnifying gladd feature though), but it is still readable and usable so it not that bad.
Played the game from start to finish with all the endings without any issue.
FPS lock -> 30 fps / Half Rate shading = enabled / TDP limit -> 3w / GPU clock -> 300 MHz
Played the game from start to finish without issues. Sometimes the resolution when starting the game is wrong but as soon as you enter the main menu it fixes itself. The tweaks for battery allow the LCD deck model to have about 7hs of battery while playing, without any loss in visual quality or compromising gameplay experience.
30 fps (in game cap), V-sync Off
When setting the game to 40fps/40hz, the game had a noticeable slowdown, affecting gameplay. Keep at 60hz and use either 60fps or 30fps cap (from the in-game settings)
On Proton 8.0-2 or lower, the gameplay works, but videos are corrupt (audio works though). On GE-proton7-55 and GE-proton8-6, the videos play fine and everything works, even with textures set to high.
Default mappings are ok, but I highly recommend searching the community layouts for better mappings (there are versions for either classic or alternate controls)
TDP to 9w
At maximum settungs most of the game runs at 60 with no issue. However in the underwater sections the performance drops and hangs between 45-50 fps
In the LCD model I can get about 2hs of battery
Mapped keys to the game's controls. You can see which ones are required on the menu.
its a VN, you can push it pretty far.
You can push the battery saving pretty far since its a VN. I set it on a TDP of 4, clock speed locked to 200hz, half rate sahding and allow tearing enabled, 21fps cap with a 42hz screen. This allowed me to complete the entire game (about 8hs) in a single deck LCD charge
I was able to complete the game from start to end without issues using the native version
Set to 30fps / 60hz cap.
set the fps cap to 30fps. The game does not feature lots of movement, so the difference between 30 and 60 is not that important...and by doing that you can pretty much play the whole game on a single deck charge
30fps / 60hz, TDP 3, GPU clock speed at 200hz
See below
Small error popup shows up the first time the game launches. You need to tick the box with the touchscreen or the mouse with STEAM button and it never shows again. Does not cause any issues in-game
Some artifacts in the background of chapter 2 (when using proton 9-04, don't know if the artifacts are still there with GE)
Some videos couldn't be played before switching to GE
Bugs from running on linux:
Most of the game works out of the box with stock proton (tested with proton9-04). However at the start of the third case an issue that prevented cutscene video playback made me switch to GE-proton9-22, which fixed it. I noticed some artifacts on the background on a few scenes during chapter 2, but since I was using proton9-04 at the time, I don't know if GE fixes them as well.
Fixing the port:
install both TGAA Community patch (https://github.com/AdmiralCurtiss/dgs_hackfix) and the High-Quality Audio patch (https://gamebanana.com/mods/309458). The first patch fixes several issues with the port, and among other things makes the game less intensive on the CPU, which helps with playing it on the Deck. The second patch is a port of the high-quality tracks audio from older versions of the game.
Performance:
I played the game locked at 30fps (which is the default for the game), but with the TGAA Community patch you can push it to 60 if you want to. The game is not demanding at all to run (especially with the TGAA Community Patch) so my settings to play at constant 30fps were as follows:
- Disable Frame Limit: ON (the game is locked to 30fps by default)
- Allow Tearing: On (use the in-game setting instead)
- TDP Limit: 4w
- Manual GPU clock: 300MHz
Set TDP to 4 and screen hz and FPS cap to 40/40 (this is not required to run the game, it was just to get more battery life). Before doing that the game ran fine at 60fps, so there shouldn't be any issues.
