Gamescope settings: Frame limit 45fps/90hz
Game settings: Performance graphic mode

I have heard that large bases such as those in multiplayer can be hard on the CPU, but so far I haven't encountered any significant slow down. Good controls for the Deck.

Games runs well overall. Had to lower some graphics to improve performance. Fps is not constant. Around 45-60 but it's expected still great
Some text can be small but not too bad. Also not too often

-console
I set L5 to the equivalent of F5 on the keyboard to open up the console/devcommands prompt.
The game ran great natively without any issues. I played Handheld on my Steam Deck most of the time.
I did use "-command" as Startup Parameters to be able to run the command prompt/devcommands to enable "god mode".
I also did set Proton Experimental about half way through the game but I can't recall why. I think it was related to my Playstation controller.

Plays perfectly. A much better experience on Deck today vs 2022, thanks to performance and interface improvements by the developer.
In-game 30 FPS cap
The Deck can get a consistent 30 FPS when using the game's "Performance" preset, which is a mix of medium and high settings, or 40-45 FPS at 75% resolutuion scale (tested single-player only). To get 60 or higher you'll need to lower some of them.

Game crashes instantly right after startup or title screen with both OpenGL and Vulkan, changing Proton version does not help
Reinstalling game or changing Proton versions doesn't help. If I select older Proton versions (7 and down), the game makes it to the title screen. On Proton 8 and Experimental it crashes instantly.

The game will likely give you no issues at all until you've built a bigger base, and even then it's much better than before.
Battery is what you'd expect as is. Between 1.5-3 hours time if you lower some settings. I usually play plugged in so I don't really notice.
The game finally runs on Steam Deck like Reddit tried to say it did 6 months ago. After disabling full screen and opting for the windowed display, setting resolution to 1152x720 and turning on the Deck's FSR, you can pretty comfortably mix and match graphics settings to maintain either 30 or 40 FPS depending on where you're at and what's going on. I have a pretty busy home base and can maintain a pretty stable 30 with draw distance and vegetation both set to high, sun shafts and small particles are on, everything else off/set to low. If you're out exploring somewhere you haven't built much in, knock down the above settings to medium and 40 FPS is mostly stable. In either case, the game is still going to stutter now and then, but this is x10 better than what it was before the June update.
Joining other servers, be it Steam or Xbox, is broken on Deck for me now, so I can't judge how it performs since the last update. But before the update, I was playing with all settings low and a 30 FPS lock. It stuttered heavy in bigger bases but out fighting and exploring it was acceptable. Hopefully it's better now.
Game performance and connection issues are too rough for an average user to enjoy. Unless you REALLY want to play Valheim, not recommened.
when playing in non-windowed fullscreen the mouse position was offset above the visual location of the cursor. had to play in windowed fullscreen to not have this effect
persistant and sudden FPS dips into the single digits that last for seconds or minutes at random
issues with de-sync and complete disconnection. tested with multiple internet connections, issue persists.
Connected to dedicated server, works great
Connecting to cross play enabled dedicated servers from the deck doesn't work if you launch it normally for some reason. A work around is to add the valheim_x86 binary as a non steam game and launch that. Works fine like that
Plays really great (and a solid 30 fps even with bigger builds, if graphics settings tweaked)
limited to 30 fps in Steam UI
For fast graphics
Turn off chromatic aberration but increase LOD distance to medium. But crucially if you want FPS to stay fast even on big builds go into bios settings and increase VRAM to 2GB.
Details on the community control layout I just uploaded:
I've been really enjoying playing Valheim (about 70 hrs in now?). But I was disappointed that of the few community control layouts uploaded to Steam none really took advantage of what Steam Input can do.
So I spent a bit of time and made a IMO pretty nice 'more automated / no keyboard required' community config. If useful you can find it under "Punkgeek Valheim." I hope this might be useful for someone else besides me ;-).
left trackpad has two modes
- Number hotkeys for 1-8 (configured to act on press-release, to prevent false triggers). Sized to be larger than default. A button in lower right switches to the 'options' mode.
- 'Options' mode is a radial menu of the few keys that IG didn't map to any buttons. rarely used features like toggle auto-pickup etc... The central button switches back to the numeric hotkeys.
Auto 'next melee weapon + shield or bow'
Pressing L4 cycles between two melee weapons and the bow. It assumes you have your shield positioned in hotkey 1, melee in hotkey 2, melee in hotkey 3 and bow in hotkey 4. This allows it to automatically reselect both your shield and your melee weapon after cycling out of bow.
Pressing L5 does a dodge/roll combo.
Pressing R4 toggles shield on/off.
Pressing R5 takes a potion (whatever you have assigned to hotkey 8).
Sample hotkey assignments in this screenshot
Starts fine but being in proximity of any serious base (i'm not talking about huge castles here, just ordinary mid/end-game base with all crafting stations, houses and etc) will drop FPS below 20 with frequent dips to even lower values, and some micro-stuttering too. Lighting sources and terraforming seems to hurt performance alot. Setting everything to minimal doesn't help, too.

It runs good on the steamdeck unless you have tons of huge basebuilding areas going on. Controls are fine but not great with a controller
It doesn't run quite as good as it did on my windows PC, but its still very playable on The Steamdeck, especially if you are starting a new game or don't have tons of basebuilding
A great game with a decent Steamdeck version, it runs good if you don't do alot of basebuilding (I do alot usually), controls where a little annoying to me compared to K+M on my PC but its 100% playable.
boot.config
Lock 40Hz/FPS
Very low FPS
Using Proton or any method the game on the Steam Deck is unplayable if you have large structures of a certain type. If you play by doing small constructions and explore a lot, the game manages to be a little playable, instead those who like me build structures will have many problems with fluidity, even everything at idle runs between 15 and 30 FPS and is very annoying...
Not just for battery, but with how demanding it gets i have resolution set to 540p at 40hz with 40fps limit, and most effects turned off.
If you play on a server or like to build a lot in a smaller area i.e. build a town. Expect those areas to drop to 15fps over time the more thats done. Out and about, easy 40 fps tho.
Steam Deck will struggle HARD the more you build. But I don't think that warrants knocking off playability points unless you really can't tolerate as low as 15 fps.
I love this game and have put all of the hours shown exclusively on steam deck. I have my own server i rent to play with a few friends and its great. However, I know I've said it multiple times in the assessment. But, be prepared for painfully low fps. I haven't seen it go into single yet. But we built a town, at first it was ok 25-30 fps. I am now down to 15-20 max running in 540p, half rate shading, and FSR, in said town due to the amount of stuff going on. If you are playing solo, you probably can enjoy this game just fine without feeling the heavy frame rate drops as long as you keep things a bit more scattered. In fact when not in the town, I get a solid smooth 40fps. Just make sure you are aware of how bad it can get with this game and don't expect too much and you'll be okay and probably enjoy. If you are a frame rate chaser, lol good luck.
Non steam game to the BepInEx.sh
Limit to 60FPS (game ran at about 45-50)
Very occasionally it will micro stutter on high graphics.
Mod support for BepInEx/thunderstorm works. If not no tinker needed.
FPS around 44 but dips below 30 on default settings.
On medium settings, framerates varies from 25 to 50 fps.
Works out of the box with excellent support.
The game detects that it runs on Steam Deck and has art matching the device when showing controls. Graphics defaults offer a good visual quality but a wobbly framerate. The default resolution did not match that of the Deck. Text input makes use of the Deck virtual keyboard automatically.
