It does not start. It launched ones under Proton-GE, but then, when I changed from windowed to fullscreen, it crashed.

Disabled video skip
Same issues as before
This is an add-on to my previous review. The stuttering seemed to be related to the videos, or intro video I suppose, and by skipping it through the config.ini file I seemed to have eliminated the problem completely. (see one of johnburt3rd's posts for file location) Having played some more since the last review, I've seen graphical glitches in certain levels, but there doesn't seem to be much consistency to what causes them. Still very playable.

Fullscreen would occasionally cause intense stuttering, Borderless worked okay, but switching between modes can cause glitching.
Intro loading seems longer than usual
The game runs through Steam without checking the compatibility box, but there are some issues. Switching between windowed and borderless and fullscreen can softlock the game or cause glitches, sometimes the game boots up and stutters. I can't seem to pinpoint what's causing the stuttering, however. At some point I couldn't even play the game, but uninstalling and reinstalling fixed made it work again. Not perfect, but when it runs it runs well.

Some stages have some weird flickering going on, like the Mushroom maps. Not game breaking but noticeable. I experienced that on 2 different Devices with different Proton Versions and Hardware.
The Intro Videos might not play with some proton versions, especially when you installed them via flatpak, codec issue maybe that are missing in flatpak but are available on a system installed proton?

Must use launch option to get past infinte loading, and intro movie is scrambled, the rest seems to work.
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 gamemoderun %command%
Tried again using different versions of Proton, and got it working with 7.0-6. Didn't need to change the config.ini to skip intro movie, but it showed a black screen with a yellow and white scrambled box in the upper left corner. So I changed it after testing. Can't get passed the loading screen at the beginning without the launch option "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 gamemoderun %command%" no matter what version I tried. And Proton version 8 and Experimental still gave out the "failed to initialize window" crash, even with the launch option and intro movie skipped.
In game, nothing was out of the ordinary. Played several stages and all was good.

Used to run fine, then had window issues. Followed Heroneet's instructions, got it running again.
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 gamemoderun %command%
set SkipMovie= to 1 to avoid failure to initialize window crash
A long while back it used to run fine out of the box on my computer. When I tried again recently, I kept getting a "failed to initiallize window" error. Eventually, I found this site and Heroneet's posts.
The config file you can edit to skip the intro movie, if it give you trouble, can be found roughly here: /home/yournamehere/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/803600/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/Nippon Ichi Software, Inc/Disgaea 5 Complete/82112621
And the launch option I copied is this: PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 gamemoderun %command%
And even then, I had to force the use of an older version of Proton. I'll try again with just the older version, since it used to run just fine.
Out of the box good
Runs (almost) perfectly -- no adjustments needed.
Switch from windowed mode into fullscreen works, but it ends in a blackscreen when changing from fullscreen back to windowed.
Little side note: The intro movie was broken on Windows 10 for me but worked flawlessly on Linux/Proton (despite being an WMV file which should run natively on WIndows). Now I'm finally able to watch the intro sequence after roughly 100 hours of playtime :)
If I don't skip the splashscreen and the initial cutscene when booting up the game, it crashes.
Switching between Windowed and Fullscreen causes the image to move up and down on the display.
After the last report, I decided to try this setting all Steam and Proton settings back to their default values. It just works. Aside from the random bug in window settings (just don't flip the toggle back and forth) this is 100% playable. I have been playing this game nearly exclusively on Deck
4 hours into the game, all on the Steam Deck without any complaints. Would highly recommend.
gamemoderun %command%
In game settings, switching back and forth between windowed and fullscreen caused the game to move up and down on screen. Only way to get out of it was to quit game and relaunch. Switching to borderless and keeping it there was fine.
gamemoderun %command%
Won't launch
The opening CGI movie just plays audio while the screen remains black. Toggling the fullscreen option sometimes causes graphical artifacts.
Apart from the notes above, EVERYTHING runs perfectly out of the box, without any tinkering.
Runs out fo the box, and now seems that Wayland can play the intro video with no problems
gamemoderun %command%
The intro video worked using Wayland, unfortunately, after the video be played, the 'fragments" remains on the screen until you finish your desktop session. But is probably a Wayland bug in Nvidia that will be fixed until the Fedora 36 release or after it.
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 gamemoderun %command%
The intro movie is borked, even with ProtonGE it doesn't works, you can disable it in (where your steamlibary folder is)/SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/803600/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/Nippon Ichi Software, Inc/Disgaea 5 Complete/1168863019/config.ini. Change the line "SkipMovie=0" to "SkipMovie=1".
Used PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 gamemoderun %command% launch flags, the first one fixes a serious problem with infinite loadings. Disabled the intro video the .ini files (Wine don't have the codecs to play it).
Playable, but in most part of the trials, you will have loading screen infinite loop.
Some stutters in full screen mode
Sometimes when I enter the game, it continues in the loading screen loop forever, until close the game.
Animated cutscenes don't work
Do NOT set the game to fullscreen or it will cause a large number of issues. Namely, setting it to fullscreen made the game slow to crawl during cutscenes and subsequently made the game lose input during anything but the main menu. A complete reinstall was required to resolve the issue.
Some jittery performance on cutscenes and the main menu.
Works on My Machine™
Using a Steam controller and if you wander off for a while and the controller auto-disconnects due to being idle and you turn it back on, it's not detected/doesn't function... it will also hang on shutting down.
I would say the FPS are lower than they should be. It's completely playable and smooth-- but lower than where it should be for what it is. VSYNC also doesn't seem to function.
I can't speak for autoplay movies-- they do not seem to play with the default settings that are being used-- so: no opening movie or presumably any other movies as it may or may not apply.

Crashed on opening movie (Proton 6.3-3)
Please disregard my previous report. I think it was OS/Steam problem.
After showing NIS & NISA logo, the game promptly crashed. If I'm not mistaken, that's when the opening movie supposed to start.
Proton 5.13-6 works because it skips the movie.

Doesn't start on Proton 6.3-2
Steam's "Play" button changed to "Stop", and shortly changed back to "Play".
Downgrading to Proton 5.13-6 works.

Game fails to start on most recent proton version (5.13-1)
Switching to proton 5.0-9 the game starts.
Can't go full screen so I believe the average person would not be happy.
Sometimes there are stalls. On counter attacks I do notice slight stalling
When I quit the game, Steam doesn't seem to detect that the game has shut down.
i cant believe this isn't native type of feeling
Initially resolved this as shown in the prior message, however, this caused cracking in other applications. Unfortunately, I can't remember what I did to fix it in the long term.
My previous message says that this became borked. This was actually due to a config file in the game, that had invalid parameters in (no idea how, as I hadn't editted any). The solution was to delete said config file (config.ini
) for the game.

Now Borked - Black screen, resizing doesn't fix
Used to start fine, now fails. An error pops up saying "Failed to resize the window size", which used to go away after a maximise and restore. That doesn't work any more. Game is definitely running as you can hear the sound, just no audio. Nothing has changed on my PC apart from updating the graphic drivers. Trying mf-install did nothing, as did trying GE and older versions of Proton. Rebooting also still didn't work.
Opening Movie doesn't play, and pulseaudio settings need changing to fix crackling. After that it plays almost flawlessly.
Significant cracking when I first played the game. Setting e_sync
to off didn't help. I, instead, found this youtube video and copied the settings out. Unfortunately, the site they used isn't available any more, but the video is high enough quality to get the data from. I don't know which specific setting(s) fixed it, so I have no included my settings file. Trial and error may be required if you experience cracking.
Note: I've been playing Windowed. When returning from the PC being locked, the game had a black screen and a there was an error hidden behind it, stating the game couldn't be resized. Clicking the error left it black. I maximised and then restored the window and the game was back.
When on Auto Detect for the key guide (tells you what button to press in tutorials, menus, etc) and using a controller, the game thinks you are always using an Xbox Controller. I was using a PS4 controller, which meant having to change the setting specifically to that in the settings. This means if i were to swap the keyboard, it wouldn't tell me the correct controls (though the keyboard binding are all over the place, so I suggest sticking to controller).
The opening video doesn't play. You can watch it out of the game if you really want to.
Not a "significant" bug, but if playing windowed, the game does appear to treat using the mouse to click outside the window as input when it was the active window (subsequent mouse clicks aren't treated as input). Like wise, selecting the game's windows (with the mouse) is treated as input, so alt
+tab
is recommended. This, however, could well also be a "feature" on Windows too.

Used Launch Options: LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgamemodeauto.so PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 mesa_glthread=true %command%
If I run the game on 75hz displays there is micro stutter, having the monitor at ty60hz makes game play like it was on windows, perfectly fine, platinum!

Tiny issues with windowing and videos aside, the game plays flawlessly even on integrated Intel graphics.
Fullscreen, windowed, and borderless mode worked as expected, but occasionally switching between them caused input to stop working until the game was restarted.
Videos do not work out of the box, although this should only affect the opening. According to the Steam forums, the game renders videos using DirectShow for Intel CPUs and Media Foundation on AMD, with an override available in the game's INI file. I tested overriding to Media Foundation and using mf-install, which didn't work; I have no idea if it's a Proton issue or if the switch is broken in the first place. Have not tried getting DirectShow support working.

Fullscreen experiences performance degradation; however, the game runs perfectly in windowed mode.
Gameplay is flawless, gamemoderun recommended though
Very minor stuttering in the main hub world/pocket dimension

The game randomly refuses to start. I need 10 attempts to start it once and then I can play it for hours without any problems. The game process does not stop after closing the game. You have to kill it manually. It will freeze occasionally at 100% CPU usage. Martial Training stage 4 freezes consistently.

Switching to fullscreen freezes the game, but windowed works fine. Freezes also happen occasionally, usually when loading a level that has an intro sequence, so save often. I also get choppy music even when ESync and FSync is off.

It runs perfectly, just click "play", and that's it.

Runs flawlessly
