This is for the GOG version. I got the .exe installation file and installed it with my main Wine prefix, and it worked right out of the box without even using Steam. I don't know which *.dlls are necessary, though.
The game works, but there's definite slowdown compared to Windows.
On Windows, one scene ran between 120 and 75 FPS, while in Linux it dropped between 65 and 45.
It works, but it's kinda shocking to see it runs slower than Horizon Zero Dawn on my machine.
Works fine OOTB
The game would sometimes start minimized when booted in fullscreen mode.
I don't know if this is a Linux specific issue, but the game doesn't seem to prevent the screensaver from turning on. Otherwise it's fine.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 gamemoderun %command%
Choppy videos, and low framerate during the gameplay if not in fullscreen mode with certain versions of Proton
Sometimes the game would boot to a tiny window, I could switch back to borderless by pressing ALT+Enter twice, but it woudln't go to fullscreen.
Some crashes, sometimes the game would hang at loading screens.
Proton versions older than 8 wouldn't make it pas the first loading screen, 8 and 9 were not super stable and had big glitches in videos, Experimental was better but not perfect for the videos, but the framerate didn't seem to go up to 60 during gameplay like the (one of? can't remember) other versions. None of the configurations really were enjoyable to play.
This is for the GOG version, which is the Windows version. Dunno why GOG doesn't have the linux version available, but anyway... the .exe version works perfectly straight out of the box either in my default Wine config or just clicking the compatibility box in Steam.
I installed the Epic Store version through Lutris. Whether I ran the .exe through Wine, Lutris, or Steam, it worked perfectly. Recognized my DualSense properly, too.
Fullscreen would occasionally cause intense stuttering, Borderless worked okay, but switching between modes can cause glitching.
Intro loading seems longer than usual
The game runs through Steam without checking the compatibility box, but there are some issues. Switching between windowed and borderless and fullscreen can softlock the game or cause glitches, sometimes the game boots up and stutters. I can't seem to pinpoint what's causing the stuttering, however. At some point I couldn't even play the game, but uninstalling and reinstalling fixed made it work again. Not perfect, but when it runs it runs well.
Disabled video skip
Same issues as before
This is an add-on to my previous review. The stuttering seemed to be related to the videos, or intro video I suppose, and by skipping it through the config.ini file I seemed to have eliminated the problem completely. (see one of johnburt3rd's posts for file location) Having played some more since the last review, I've seen graphical glitches in certain levels, but there doesn't seem to be much consistency to what causes them. Still very playable.
added vcrun2022
I installed this with the GOG installer with my default Wine prefix and then added it to Steam. It worked fine through Wine, but to get it to work in Steam, as mentionned by others, Visual C++ had to be installed. I did this by adding the vcrun2022 library using Protontricks. Performance seems a bit slow, but I haven't compared to Windows, so I can't tell if it's a Linux thing. Performs fine on High instead of Ultra with my machine.
This is for the GOG version. I installed using the offline installer and added the exe to Steam, and that was basically it.
Fullscreen would minimize window, and upon maximizing it would go back to windowed outside of Steam.
I installed this using the GOG offline installer. It runs pretty well just with Wine, but Fullscreen doesn't work correctly. Adding the game to the Steam Library and running it in compatibiliy mode seems to work perfectly.
This is for the GOG version installed with Wine. I had to switch Proton versions to 9.0-3, it didn't work with Experimental, that would give the following message "An error occurred while launching this game: Compatibility tool failed". Never seen that before, but it worked fine with 9.0-3. Through Wine the gameplay was very buggy.
Couldn't get past the Unity splash screen
This is for the GOG version. Whether I installed from Lutris or the .exe file from the GOG store, added the game to Steam, the results were the same. The best I got was seeing the Unity splash screen, and then it would stall on a blank black screen. I tried multiple versions of Proton, I tried some stuff on Lutris, I tried on my default Wine prefix, nothing got me past that splash screen.
It works great without VSync
VSync does drop the FPS quite a bit and the game gets choppy, while it doesn't make a noticeable difference in Windows.
I added the following dlls: vkd3d-proton, mfc140.dll, vcrun2019
The game would work straight from Lutris, however adding the game to Steam required a bit more work. I had to add the game to Steam, then add some dlls (they were mentionned on WineHQ) using protontricks, and use the 8.0 version of proton.
FPS drop in fullscreen on older computer
FPS drop in fullscreen
In fullscreen mode FPS drops quite on a bit on an older machine
On my main computer the game runs fine, but on an older computer (phenom II with a 7850HD) it's super slow on fullscreen, but plays full speed when windowed.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Proton 8 didn't have video, 9.0 and experimental (in March 2024) didn't boot. It wouldn't boot at all without launch options, either, no matter the Proton version.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Game would not boot correctly with Proton 8.0.5 or newer in Fullscreen
Does not work natively with DualSense, not a Linux issue, but requires SteamInput
Works the same as the first X Legacy Collection. Same requirements and setup.
Works flawlessly
I didn't even need to check the compatibility box, worked right out the gate
Works great OOTB
Fullscreen is a bit finicky when alt-tabbing, but I've mostly been able to continue playing.
The patches have really improved performance since launch, stuttering and low frame rates have mostly disappeared for me.
Not much tinkering, really, but some C++ Redistributables had to be installed. Launching the game prompted this automatically, however.
Worked OOTB
There is some occasional stuttering, doesn't seem consistent or easily reproducible. For the most part it's a non-issue
I got this through Amazon Games and installed it with Nile. From then, I tried running the game through Steam, and no matter what dlls I tried to add or versions of Proton I switched to, I never managed to get it to work. I added it in Lutris, and it worked fine there.
Apart from Fullscreen being finicky, it's great
The Borderless option sometimes froze the video, though the game was still running in the background. Also it would sometimes start up on the wrong screen in a multi-monitor setup.
Didn't have any real issues with it. Works great for me.
Had to pick the 8.0.5 version of proton in the Compatibility menu, but that was it.
I was getting a C++ Redistributable error
The game doesn't support Sony controllers, and I could not get it to work through Steam
This is for the Epic Games Store version. I needed to add some C++ Redistributable to get it to work. It works if I start it up from Lutris or the Epic Games Store (installed through Lutris). I could not get the game to start from Steam like I have with other Epic Store Games, getting the following error message "Unable to detect if the game was launched through the Epic Games Launcher".
Changing the settings to fullscreen would freeze the game
I got this game from the Amazon Prime free games and installed it through Nile. I've tried different versions of Proton, but can't get the full screen to work properly. There does not seem to be a borderless window available either. Most games are within a smaller window anyway, so this might not be such a big deal.
Windowed mode did not work very well, it often would reduce the window to the taskbar
The right stick would move the mouse, and on a dual screen setup the mouse ended up messing with stuff on the second screen. The game recognized a DualSense controller, but has Xbox prompts (not a big deal), but R1 + X (Rb + A) would sometimes switch the game from FullScreen to Windowed. This doesn't seem to happen with XInput controllers.
My save games disappeared at some point, even though the files still seemed to be exist.
Running from Lutris worked on the fly, but I could not get it to run Steam. I tried adding some dlls with ProtonTricks, changed Proton versions, you name it, couldn't get it to work.
This is for the GOG version. I installed it through Lutris, but added the .exe to Steam. I had to select "force compatibility mode" and it worked right away.
Sometimes the audio lagged
Intense stuttering in the menus
This is for the GOG version, installed with the .exe file in Wine and then added to Steam. It wouldn't work properly in Wine, and I had to change Proton version to 9.0-3. Still, the menus would stutter a ton whenever a button was clicked. Out of the menus it runs fine, but the audio seemed to go in and out of sync on occasion.
All I had to do was switch from Experimental to 9.0-3 and it worked great.
This is for the Epic Store version, installed through Lutris. It played straight ootb through Lutris, but I couldn't get it to work by adding the .exe to Steam, even with some tinkering, but I didn't try very hard to be honest. Played perfectly with Lutris. Didn't try online multiplayer.
Works great out of the box.
Plays fine, some occasional graphical artifacts
Some levels had some graphical glitching
