Did a quick test game with a friend using an Xbox controller. Works fine that way, although him looking over my shoulder at the screen was not the best experience overall.
Whatever magic Valve put into Proton is working. This game is solid, audio works at all times, no lag. Decided to mess with it and put it on SD as well, and aside from slower loading times, it is still excellent.
Windows mode in Game Mode causes issues. Requires you go to Desktop Mode to switch to Fullscreen prior to playing in Game Mode.
The game has crashed 4 times in the 9 hours or so I've played for. I suspect it isn't a Proton issue, but an issue with the actual game itself. Save often. I have lost probably 45 progress due to the crashing.
I remember when most games would be in fullscreen mode by default. This is one of those games that could benefit from it. That would put it at "no tinkering required to make it work." If it wasn't for ProtonDB existing, I honestly would have thought this was broken and not bothered going into desktop to see if I can make this game work. Thank you, other contributors, for making this game playable for all of us.
4 hours into the game, all on the Steam Deck without any complaints. Would highly recommend.

In game settings, switching back and forth between windowed and fullscreen caused the game to move up and down on screen. Only way to get out of it was to quit game and relaunch. Switching to borderless and keeping it there was fine.
Switching between Windowed and Fullscreen causes the image to move up and down on the display.
After the last report, I decided to try this setting all Steam and Proton settings back to their default values. It just works. Aside from the random bug in window settings (just don't flip the toggle back and forth) this is 100% playable. I have been playing this game nearly exclusively on Deck
Had to use the right hand trackpad for mouse and the triggers as left and right click. The gamepad is not supported at all.
I would recommend playing this on a desktop rather than the Steam Deck. It's a fun game, but not designed for handhelds at all.
Runs a little hot, and you can have an occasional dip in framerate if things explode, but it runs amazingly otherwise on all default settings. Would recommend, but don't take it past low settings to minimize those framerate dips.
Broken Demo
Game will run the launcher, but pressing "Start Game" will not result in gameplay. Other posts mention that they've added a kernel level anti-cheat. So I guess we won't be playing this on Linux at all, sadly.
This is the only way I've been playing this game. SWR on Deck is absolute perfection. If you love giant robots, you'll love them even more in handheld format
