I ran the game with Proton 9.0-3 and I had no issues out of the box.

Game plays great. Just install and it runs at 40 fps with everything at almost ultra.

Tried several versions of Proton GE, as well as experimental. Also tried switching OS versions between preview, beta, and stable.
Crashes when reaching celebrimbor on first mission. continuously crashes when trying to load the save after that.
Can't get passed the first mission due to constant crashing.
in steam os mode if you use the volume buttons you can no longer use the controller without restarting the game. Desktop mode worked fine issue didnt occur

In-game 30 FPS cap
Just as with Shadow of Mordor, pretty much the entire UI ranges from tiny-to-miniscule, with no scaling option. Icons on the map and controller glyphs are often impossible to decipher.
Works great out of the box. Some slight tweaks to improve battery life. Without them, it's a decent drain on the battery.
40 FPS limit, settings set to Medium
Configure the graphics to your liking. I'm enjoying dynamic resolution (40fps target), High graphics preset. Sometimes gets a bit low res but very rarely drops frames below 40fps. Fixed resolution (1280x800) at High is about 35fps with drops. Fixed resolution at Highest preset is about 30fps with drops.

Install mfc140 via winetricks
For GoG version, use Heroic, switch to Wine-GE-Proton7-42 and use winetricks to install mfc140 library. Works fine then.
Limit to 30 fps, TRP 9 and GPU 1100
Works great. Medium settings and with the little tweaks gave a good 2h30-3h00 of gameplay.
Pretty straightforward, install it limit to 40FPS without Dynamic Resolution using Medium Settings.
Play at 40FPS limited, Medium Settings gives around 2h Battery Life during Main Story and Secondary Missions
There's some slight dificulty to read text, you must increase it a bit
Text for subtitles is a bit small / slightly blurry.
Sometimes switches to keyboard controls. Need to start the game when that happens. This will usually occur on the main menu.
30 fps maxed out even in intense scenes. Only one problem so far... Touching screen would permanently disable game controls forcing restart
Touching screen would permanently disable game controls forcing restart of game
This is probably the first of many games that really educated me on just what the steam deck can really do. What an experience!
