You can start the game with WINE. (I tested it with wine-8.0.2) Select “Manage” -> Select “Browse Local Files”

This game used to have major problems! I love seeing games get fixed!
It worked almost flawlessly. The agent action videos did not work, but you'd eventually end up skipping them, so no major loss.
The ingame agent action videos do not work
The game is still very enjoyable OOTB just missing the videos, which can be repetitive anyway during gameplay.
Videos do not play, No voice/sound in throne room, however this does not impact gameplay.
I did not experience any issues like others have mentioned like invisible launcher or crashing when changes to settings are made, was able to run game at 2560x1440 both under hardware (VEGA 64 option) and Direct Draw HAL option, did not test software rendering mode though. Played 8 hours and many battles.

Play with Proton 4.2-9 and not work with Proton 4.11 and 5.0.

Game works native on Linux. On Proton it will only crash (DX9 and DX11), it installed even an Adobe Flash Player :-(
Played the tutorial and the first levels. Game runs great. I chose only silver rating because of a crash. But I am not exactly sure where that came from.
I have found that you try and change any of the settings that it crashes and none of the videos for assassinations etc don't work as well as audio with the throne room. But the game runs fine besides the issues stated.

AFTER finding the invisible button in the total war launcher It runs just fine but you have to find the INVISIBLE launch button in the not working total war launcher... the launcher stays entirely white but the buttons work. other than that nothing else is needed and runs fine out of the box
The launcher added to all Total War games is broken under Proton/WINE. It appears completelly white BUT the buttons actually work (to start the game you have to click somewhere on the top right region). The game works great from that point, although setting anything above 1920x1080 drastically drops the FPS (probably a problem with the old engine). The most serious issue is not related to gameplay - after quitting the game it is still running untill you kill every process related to it manually (all ".exe", all wine related, and the "steam web helper" group).
