Added the launch options as others have recommended here, had no issues at all. Game ran well with DLSS.
DXVK_CONFIG="dxgi.customVendorId = 10DE" mangohud %command%
Was able to play with another player for a couple hours without issue as well.
In general game runs a bit smoother than on Windows11 but mangohud shows 5-10fps less than on Windows
works well, the fps might be on the lower side but well playable on Ultra for some weird reason though the preset fps limit was set to 30
DXVK_CONFIG="dxgi.customVendorId = 1002" LD_PRELOAD="" PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%
both of these launch options are nescesary, atleast on AMD, without the DXVK_CONFIG the game instantly crashes, without the LD_PRELOAD you get the ~30min fps bomb DXVK_CONFIG="dxgi.customVendorId = 1002" LD_PRELOAD=""
it just works. Performance is iffy but same is on windows.
DXVK_CONFIG="dxgi.customVendorId = 10DE" %command%
Occasional crackling
Tv screens displayed solid colour and loading screens are blank but other than that its fine.
Issues unless using launch option
DXVK_CONFIG="dxgi.customVendorId = 10DE" gamemoderun mangohud %command%
DXVK_CONFIG setting was required for the game to actually launch, without it it would instantly throw up the UE5 crash report window. See EntirelyTom's report for details on what to do if this affects you, which may happen if you have both an iGPU and a dGPU.
That aside: performance is still quite below the bar, but I'm still approving it because it's very early access and this was expected. Will be checking in every now and then, hoping to see performance improvements.
DXVK_CONFIG="dxgi.customVendorId = 1002" %command%
The game appears to maybe prioritize the iGPU rather than my dedicated GPU, which caused a lot of problems manifesting in the game not launching at all with no error message, instantly crashing showing the UE crash debugger or launching and crashing during shader caching depending on the Proton version selected.
Using the following launch parameters seems to force the game to use the correct GPU and launch with no problem.
DXVK_CONFIG="dxgi.customVendorId = 1002" %command%
"1002" is the PCI Vendor ID for AMD, "10DE" is the PCI Vendor ID for NVIDIA, "8086" is the PCI Vendor ID for Intel.
Thanks to all the people in the Linux Experience thread on the Forever Winter Discord for finally finding a potential fix for this.
Had to increase the Deck's minimum VRAM in the BIOS to stop the game from repeatedly crashing.
Used CryoTools to increase swap file size, and used the Steam Deck's BIOS menu to increase minimum VRAM from 1gb to 4gb which stopped the crashing during loading screen issues.
Without these steps, the game runs very badly and frequenly crashes during loading screens.
As I stated before, the game runs great until 30 min of playtime mark or more. Then the game starts to "tear" with lower fps.
Performance problem start after >30min of playtime. The screen starts to "tear" and fps drops. Until that moment, the game works fine.
I tried changing proton version but the problem persists. Will try with different options tomorrow and see what can I do more to mitigate or remove the tearing problem.
No mouse input on the first launch, fixed with restarting
Running on borderless just fine with high settings
Going into the install directory Windows/ForeverWinter/Content I had to rename the Movies folder to something else. This has fixed the crashes for me.
Set to Proton 9.0-3, turned off in-game framerate limiter
The game ran great, save for one issue: I had to have Windows players join my game as opposed to me joining their's. Otherwise, there were no issues. The default framerate limiter is set to 30 fps, be sure to change it.

As others, had to rename/remove the movies folder to get the game to run. This game is very early access, and has lots of bugs and jank, but it appears to be about the same as in Windows.
PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 MANGOHUD=1 gamemoderun prime-run %command%
Using 9.0-3 it launches and runs without crashes for me. I played for a few hours. The framerate is quite low given my hardware, but given that it's an early release I suspect it'll improve. Even at 50-60fps I'm still playing it because it's not as bad as I would expect.
The game doesn't launch
I click play, it says its running for maybe 20 seconds, and then the play button on steam switches back to saying 'play' instead of 'stop'
gamescope -w 1920 -h 1080 -W 1920 -H 1080 -r 60 -f %command%
Guaranteed crash on main menu unless changing display to 60hz and using gamescope. Crashes frequently when loading.
Camera would lock up with limited range of motion after returning to The Innards.
Fairly high end PC unable to achieve more than 60 fps
Needed to force 9.0-3 in order for game to load properly. If not, it was crashing during the Epic account link. Every so often, after an update, the game will crash after for a few runs.
This is the only game that when there is an update, my download speeds and disk usage speeds slow to a crawl. Any other game updates (on a 1 gig fiber connection) can download at an average peak of 700Mbps. Disk usage when applying those updates is similar. But with TFW, I reguarly drop down to 6-7Mbps on download speed and around 50Mbps on disk usage.
It's very early access now, so even on a 7800X3d and a 4080 Super, I'm still not able to achieve amazing frame rates. I am getting anywhere between 40-60 while running everything on High. But for an EA game, where the devs said there wouldn't be Linux support at the start initially, it's great.
MANGOHUD=1 %command%
The background of main menu is plain white and loading screens are just a black screen, tho to be honest I'm not sure if it's supposed to be that way or not, maybe it works correctly?
The performance is terrible due to Unreal Engine 5 being Unreal Engine 5 and the game being in early access, but it is more than playable if you're willing to settle for upscaling and/or framegen solutions
The game can be buggy buggy due to being extremely early access, but the developers are actively improving it and I have my full trust in them: The game is clearly heading towards becoming an extremely solid product with a lot of work put into it already and the concept of the game is also amazing, the future is looking bright
This report is marked as "tinkering" because I've specifically set my Proton version to 9.0-3, which is in fact Steam's recommended default, instead of Experimental which I usually run. I did so because wanted to ensure this report stays on that Proton version, as so far this is the only version I'm aware of that can run this game without major issues on my system
For some reason the Proton 9.0-3 solution was not working for me. Would always crash at the main menu screen, and if I used anything below Proton 9.0-3 it wouldn't even start up.
The only thing that's worked is to rename the movies folder at:
/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/The Forever Winter/Windows/ForeverWinter/Content/Movies
Doesn't play the intro/menu background video but it doesn't crash.
Because of renaming the "movies" folder, the background of in-game monitors and screens are white.
It's a very Early Access game with plenty of potential. Unable to join matches in multiplayer despite Epic Games overlay working.

Skip the Epic Games binding at the main menu, you can do it once you're in the main game after the tutorial.
Do not use Experimental or Glorious-Eggroll at this time. I don't know why but sticking to Proton 9.0-3 was the most stable. Switching to Windowed with Alt+Enter seemed smart to get past the account binding screen too. My performance was fine for a game that is currently renowned for it's poor ingame performance, so I tried 75% internal resolution and FSR for good measure. I'm running Medium-High settings, lowering everything that's unimportant. The main issue is the water tbh.
Tried proton 9.0-3 but yeah . . it just kept crashing wayland over and over again, every 20 mins or so, switched to expereimental and it was fine after that. Asso tried GE9.13 and that launched but crashed when trying to go to innards . . > expereimental is fine here <
Proton 9.0-3 and Proton experimental. does not start the game.
Proton 9.0-3 and Proton experimental. does not start the game. after installing the EGS services. The game does not start through the steam launcher. it is possible to launch from the folder, but the game will open not logged into the account. and it will output an error.
Plays as well as can be expected for an early early access title. Looks and sounds great, looking forward to further development.
Missing video in starting menu and on TV screens in the Innards.
On default Steam settings, crashes at launch when it gets to the starting menu. Fires up without any problems on Proton 9.0-3.
According to developer the game is released earlier in Early Acces because of the fanbase requesting for it. It runs as expected compared to people with a Windows system. (for example SplattercatGaming's review on this game). This means in quiet area's >100 FPS but when it gets busy it can go < 60 FPS but not lower than 30 FPS. This is most likely due to lack of optimization and is not a Proton issue.
In this specific case I find it acceptable that it runs < 60 FPS in intense situations due to the state of this Early Access. The game is playable without other issues with Proton for my setup. Not recommended because of the state of the game at the moment.
Proton 9.0-3 to get the game to launch, also no loading screens for me just black screen.
Early acess game released even earlier in development due to player requests. Patience is needed people.

Rename /SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/The Forever Winter/Windows/ForeverWinter/Content/Movies
fps lower then 60 at any settings (unlimited set)
everything simple -
early access
Audio cutout when launching a second quest
System crash on Alt-Tab
Alt-Tabbing and an extraction at the end of my first quest (post-tutorial)
Early Access game with little/poor optimization as of 9/26/2024
Clearing out Compat Data to resolve launch issues, also delete's save game history (assuming Epic Account linkage prevents this but not tested)
Can not get game to open. Can not find .Ini file, i assume because game does not launch?
Can not find the INI, Game does not open/launch while using suggested 9.01-3 Proton.
Game has been reinstalled, currently not opening after various fixes (launch arguements, reinstall, drivers, trying different OS's and linux distro's)
Runs good so far
ESC-Key seems to not work in some situations
1080p on Ultra, capped at 60fps
Can run, but needs work for controller and optimization for steam deck
significant preformance problems currently and are unable to join public games, still playable but not a very smooth experience
Proton 9.0-3 low settings
External keyboard and mouse
Trying to link to epic caused a crash
Performance was extremely bad in training mission but improved afterwards, mostly hovered around 23-31 (was locked at 30fps) but did have frequent significant dips
crashed or returned to innards when trying to join public games and on some loading screens though progress was saved
was not able to join public games after a few attempts, have not attempted to invite another player yet
Custom ini tweaks are more or less required - even with a 4080
Glitched through a wall
Cant launch if you use any other proton version than 9.01 - 3
A lot of pop-in for the first game area.
Low FPS for sure. Expected because it's a very fresh Early Access Release
At startup with Steam it asks if you want to link your EGS account. this is totally OPTIONAL however it may let you group with more people. Also, if you click the same area twice to confirm it will pop up again anyway asking you to link accounts. Simply click the X at the top right of the screen. Works after that. Linking is ideal though, as you can group up with more people.
I don't believe performance is any better on Windows, so don't expect to have a stable 60fps until the devs improve it. Otherwise, it works.
MANGOHUD=1 %command%
Changing to proton 9.0-3 and setting my display to 60hz solved the crash at the main menu. Tried GE 9.X and GE 8.X but the symptoms persisted. I guess different versions work for different pcs.
Early Access So Adjust Your Expectations
Very low framerate , even on low settings
Input seems to fluctuate in some menus between mouse and game controller, controller input in menus is somewhat laggy.
World looks amazing and can't wait for further development. Great job so far FunDog!
DO NOT USE GE PROTON, YOU WILL CRASH, steam's 9.0-3 proton should work just fine
This is an alpha, so performance issuse are probally becuase of that
