%command% --disable-gpu
d3dx9, d3dx9_43, corefonts
The mouse will click in the incorrect location. Pressing Alt-Enter to go into fullscreen and then Alt-Enter to go back to windowed will fix the problem. Has to be done at every launch. I just do it at character selection.
%command% --disable-gpu
Set the launch options in Steam Run the launcher, allow the game to update and perform a first run which will fail.
Run protontricks 205710 d3dx9 d3dx9_43 corefonts
Edit your eqclient.ini in /steamapps/common/Everquest F2P and set the line VertexShaders=TRUE to VertexShaders=FALSE
This works even since the 64bit client update Feb 15 2022

Unable to get in game
%command% --disable-gpu
changed game resolution in the launcher settings, added d3dx9, d3dx9_43, and corefonts via protontricks
Tried the methods elsewhere on this page but after picking a server, I would get a splash screen and a few seconds of music then the game exists
%command% --disable-gpu
d3dx9, d3dx9_43, corefonts
Some music tracks that were originally in MIDI won't play sometimes, like the shop theme. Not sure how to fix that.
If you play in windowed, make sure you set the right resolution for your screen, minimize it then re-maximise it back, otherwise your mouse clicks will be innacurate on your UI.
A few years back this game was completely borked on Linux. Not it's possible to run this 20+ years old grandpa of an MMO.
%command% --disable-gpu
Installed using protontricks: d3dx9, d3dx9_43, corefonts
It runs really well on the steam deck - can even play in handheld mode if you get used to the controls
%command% --disable-gpu
White screen fixed via "%command% --disable-gpu" startup option
Alt Tabbing while playing in desktop mode doesn't work
Command line options are necessary to get the patcher working, and the protontricks d3d is needed for graphics to render. Works perfectly!
%command% --disable-gpu
protontricks 205710 d3dx9
I chose "Everquest" (not any of the expansion entries) and the "Standalone - Live version" installation script. Game is running well without any issues, disconnects, or crashes. No white screen launcher either.
Installing via Steam and Proton led to game crashes and having to work around the white screen launcher.
%command% --disable-gpu
protontricks 205710 d3dx9
Mouse position not recognized correctly at first
Game is old, happens on Windows as well
Confirmed working with @reeze 's tweaks below

%command% --disable-gpu
protontricks 205710 d3dx9
Like for other Daybreak Games Launchers --disable-gpu will fix the white window issue.

white launcher screen
if you wait long enough and click the launcher where the launch button should be, you can get a failed to load graphics dll error
Borked. Unable to get past launcher.
EverQuest, (Titanium Pack) Project 1999, proton experimental As of 10-09-2021 The game stopped running

launcher needs wined3d to render properly, else it's just a white window
protontricks 205710 d3dx9
disconnects within 2 minutes regardless of server, unclear why. assuming some checks for 'real' windows
the previously listed eqclient.ini tweaks were applied

protontricks 205710 d3dx9_43 protontricks 205710 d3dx9 protontricks 205710 corefronts
Would disconnect from server after 1-2 minutes
Prior to any tinkering the game would load with NO character models, unable to move in game, and disconnection within 60seconds
After the below tweaks (as listed by others), all models visible, and game playable for about 60 seconds before it disconnects again.
in the eqclient.ini change/add the following VertexShaders=FALSE CPUAffinity0=-1 CPUAffinity1=-1 CPUAffinity2=-1 CPUAffinity3=-1 CPUAffinity4=-1 CPUAffinity5=-1 CPUAffinity6=-1 CPUAffinity7=-1
Not sure if the CPU changes was needed or not. by default my .ini only had CPUAffinity0=1 in it (And it didnt work any better leaving it as it was)

"YOU HAVE BEEN DISCONNECTED" After Two Minutes Of Play
Game installs and runs ok after using protontricks to install the d3dx9 DLLs and corefonts package. However, I end up getting disconnected (with the "YOU HAVE BEEN DISCONNECTED" screen) and kicked to server select after about 2 minutes of play. The in game network monitor (F11) does not reveal any connection anomalies before getting disconnected. In addition, the mouse cursor is slightly offset from its actual position on screen.

protontricks 205710 d3dx9 / protontricks 205710 corefronts / protontricks 205710 d3dx9_43
Textures in some zones run in strange parallel lines with black empty voids along where skinning should occur.
Must Super-Key in order to get out of Secondary monitor where EQ is Placed and parked at full screen.
DISCONNECTED FROM SERVER Occurs after about 2 minutes.
Character will start, server select will start, but Server will Discconnect from User Client within 3 minutes.

game server will disconnect you within a minute or two
Game install and starts up just fine as per the latest info provided here using protontricks and editing eqclient.ini.
However once I am in the game logged in with a character, I am getting the YOU HAVE BEEN DISCONNECTED message after about 1-2 minutes.
This renders the game "unplayable" sadly.
My guess is the game server runs some checks that are not satisfied and will thus disconnect you.

protontricks 205710 d3dx9 / protontricks 205710 corefronts / protontricks 205710 d3dx9_43 I had to put the proton 5.06 or it wouldnt work!
In the case of a 6 cores CPU:
CPUAffinity0=-1 CPUAffinity1=-1 CPUAffinity2=-1 CPUAffinity3=-1 CPUAffinity4=-1 CPUAffinity5=-1 VertexShaders=FALSE
I managed to fix the crash after the latest patch, you now need to install all of these from protontricks/winetricks (previously _43 was enough):
d3dx9 d3dx9_43 corefonts
It then runs fine. If you're still having loading/performance problems try setting CPUAffinity to -1 for all cores in the eqclient.ini.

In your eqclient.ini you have to edit the line "VertexShaders=TRUE" to "VertexShaders=FALSE", in order for your player model to show up. You also need to use protontricks and install two things. d3dx9_43, and core fonts. The proper way to use protontricks is "./protontricks 205710 d3dx9_43", and "./protontricks 205710 corefonts" . 205710 being the app ID for everquest F2P on steam. For people having issues with VERY slow loading times and connection time outs, you have to edit your eqclient.ini with these lines. CPUAffinity0=-1 CPUAffinity1=-1 CPUAffinity2=-1 CPUAffinity3=-1 Since i have a quad core processor, it might be different for people with more. So the game was running great, however they had a patch, and something changed in the games UI, which for some reason causes the game to throw a error window when you press "play everquest" in the server window.

Had to install d3dx9_43 and corefonts via protontricks (https://github.com/Matoking/protontricks) this solved missing graphics (d3dx9_43), and slow performance (corefonts).
Runs better than Wine, handles switching between windowed and full screen better. No issues with mouse alignment as per Wine.
Only tested in group / solo setting so far. Has crashed once when switching from Windowed to Full screen.

I'm able to update the game after it installs, and it actually gets in game, but you can't see the characters at the player select screen. I see the background, some firey torches, and butterlies flying around, but that's it.

Get the following error when Launchpad launches.
LaunchPad was unable to connect. Please check the network connection or try again later. If the problem persists, please visit https://help.daybreakgames.com for assistance.

Thus far I have not yet had any real luck running EverQuest (Steam variant) in Proton, but for the first time today (with Proton 4.2-3) it actually ran! The launcher/patcher loaded fine and patched everything, and then the game itself loaded as far as the character select screen (which is where I gave up on it). The problems (for me currently) are that there were no graphics visible for the characters, nor for the game UI (although some text from the UI displayed, the graphical bits did not). I will try later to do some hackery using ProtonTricks, etc. and see if I can improve on things any.
In the meantime, anyone who's really dead-set on playing this game might wish to try the download version from the EverQuest website in PlayOnLinux, Lutris, or even just plain old vanilla WINE (latest version you can get), as this game runs nearly native for me in WINE. Once you get it running, you can always add it to Steam as an external game for easy launching and access to some of the basic Steam features.

To work the game requires d3dx9_43. Load times are abysmal (in fact so abysmal that I got a connection timeout before I could finish loading), and so is performance (at least on my high res screen). Supposedly the game also requires wmi to work which is only supported on 32-bit prefixes, and therefore not in proton.
My first attempt to launch the game also failed, but the launcher worked the second time. I was using native runtimes instead of steams which may have had an impact on this.

Launcher will not start
