Works well out of the box with propietary drivers
Sometimes audio will corrupt briefly.
Borderless Window Option will just maximize the window automatically if set to your native resolution.
Settings Dialogue from the launcher may take several clicks, causing multiple settings windows to appear. Click it once and wait for it to appear. Changing tabs may take multiple clicks.
No Offline Mode, MMORPG

Install and play!
Worked great out of the box for me, just clicked install and play! This also includes the new Origin server. I did not have to use any launch options.

PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 %command%
EQ2 Has NEVER liked task switching.
If you experience an error telling you that you need more space while trying to install the beta client for the upcoming Origins server, adding PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 %command% to launcher solved that issue for me. Thanks very much to u/Quetzaxiv on reddit for providing that tip!

No issue, without the --disable-gpu. No modification needed on my configuration
Some artefacts on the launcher, that's all
gamemoderun %command% --disable-gpu
You gotta enter that launching argument in order to see and use the launcher properly. Otherwise, everything works just fine. Also, don't expect this game to run too smoothly on high graphics even if you have good specs. This game is badly optimized ever since its release in 2004.
gamemoderun %command% --disable-gpu
On Void Linux the game would just stop loading assets after about an hour of play. Void Linux ships with ulimit -Hn
is 4096
, and ESync recommends 524288
. Had to modify /etc/security/limits.conf
and add <username> hard nofile 524288
. After reboot the game stopped crashing and runs flawlessly. Reference: https://github.com/lutris/docs/blob/master/HowToEsync.md
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% --disable-gpu
Moving from one area to the other sometimes does not load.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% --disable-gpu
The game will crash on alt-tabbing or resizing the screen, keeping it windowed seems to work ok.
Requires installation of nvidia drivers to play without poor framerate

--use-gl=gles2
protontricks 201230 corefonts
Had to run 'protontricks 201230 corefonts' and set launch options to '--use-gl=gles2' to fix launcher
--use-gl=gles2
Add "--use-gl=gles2" without quotes to your launch options to fix the game's launcher. By default it renders using directx and it's borked. After inspecting, this is an issue on their side, not wine/dxvk's side. Aside from the launcher workaround, the game itself works flawlessly.
You either ignore the bad artifacts in the armor or learn where the launch button is on the all white launcher. Once in the game its fine.
Artifects in armor as previously noted by others
The Gamemode line suggested by others no longer works for me, the game will simply refuse to launch. Without that line i can not use current versions of proton without that damn white screen again!
The white screen issue is a serious problem, im not sure why the gamemode comman is no longer working. This is a fresh manjaro install so im out of ideas atm.
gamemoderun %command% --disable-gpu
After installing the DarqUI custom UI's "large" UI components everything is both readable and usable
gamemoderun %command% --disable-gpu
This game doesn't like to be task switched out of, even in Windows. It resets the game window from full screen to a little 800x600 window. So, it's not a Linux issue.
Game installed, updated and ran perfectly out of the box. I encountered zero issues in the two hours I played it. Use the game parameters above though - they're needed.
gamemoderun %command% --disable-gpu
custom steam deck
Have not noticed any issues in either desktop or game mode. Game is very playable in desktop mode with mouse and keyboard. Handheld mode requires a lot of tinkering with bindings due to EQ2's many hotbar skills.
After 24th May (Varsoon TLE server drop & overall server downtime) game crashes.
gamemoderun %command% --disable-gpu
Tried v5 of proton and up to experimental, v6.3-8 gets me farthest- which is launcher, then a blank black game screen & an in-game cursor, before crashing. Sometimes leaves launcher, other times crashes launcher along with the game.
gamemoderun %command% --disable-gpu
After updating the Mesa drivers to 22.0.3, the artifacts on some of the armor is no longer present.
Launches with a black box appearing, nothing else.
gamemoderun %command% --disable-gpu
No lag, no connection issues, been playing thousands of hours with no issues
I have been actively playing and thus testing EQ2 and DCUO with Proton and this is yet another update. As of this writing, there is no need for Proton GE anymore, both EQ2 and DCUO run great on Nvidia, Intel and AMD hardware with Proton 7 and higher (experimental). Last time around I tested this game with an Nvidia 1030 GT and now I retested it with a new Nvidia Lenovo T600. Still runs great, no issues whatsoever. Tinker: If you are experiencing a white launcher / launchpad, put the command seen above in your Steam launch options. This will a) make sure that you are getting maximum performance since both games are cpu heavy and b) it will fix the white launcher issue. Because Proton 6 and higher use an updated version of DXVK, this should also take care of the black dots issue that Nvidia users were experiencing in the past (see my previous reports on this matter). All in all / verdict: EQ2 and DCUO run absolutely great via Proton and even much more stable than the native Windows version. Performance and loading times are better too.
Adding the launch option of, gamemoderun %command% --disable-gpu resolved the white screen within launchpad.
Proton-7.1-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Launch Option: gamemoderun %command% --disable-gpu
The new armors show artifacts. It is most noticeable on plate armor.
I have minor graphic artifacts on the new armors. This is most noticeable on the plate armor. I have tried different version of Proton and gfx drivers, but I have yet to find a fix.
I have been actively playing and thus testing EQ2 and DCUO via GE and vanilla Proton and this is my most recent update. As of this writing, there is no need for Proton GE anymore, both EQ2 and DCUO run great on Nvidia, Intel and AMD hardware with Proton 5.x and 6.3 and higher (experimental).
If you are experiencing a white launcher / launchpad, put this command into your Steam launch options for EQ2, DCUO and Planetside 2: gamemoderun %command% --disable-gpu

Launcher completely white
running on proton experimental the text box works buttons work on the launcher but the launcher is completely white
1440p all on max .. no issues
Update to my previous report (recommended method): All previous issues (black dots on Nvidia hardware, white launcher glitch) have been fixed with ProtonGE version 6.12-GE1 and 6.14-GE2. EQ2 runs faster and more stable with this newest ProtonGE release. This is the ideal out of the box experience.
- Tested via two seperate machines: 1x Nvidia 1030GT and 1x AMD RX 560 and RX 570 and Intel HD 530 / 630
- Tested via openSUSE Tumbleweed (newest snapshot) and Ubuntu 20.04.2
- Tested by playing at the very least 30+ hours with this ProtonGE release
Tested: Before you switch to a higher ProtonGE version, make sure to delete the corresponding ProtonGE compatdata folder for your EQ2 installation in order to proactively avoid compatability issues when switching between ProtonGE versions. Forgetting to do this may result in launcher crashes or might not change the situation at all, meaning that you might continue to experience a white launcher or graphical glitches on Nvidia hardware if you forget to do this. If you really want or have to stick to the official / vanilla Proton release:
- AMD and Intel: Use Proton 5.0-10 in order to bypass the white launcher issue introduced with Proton 5.13 and higher. Nvidia: See previous report and below in order to fix the black dots issue
- If you absolutely must use Proton 5.13 and higher: See previous post or disable DXVK via
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
(launch options) in order to fallback to OpenGL rendering. Workaround for the white launcher issue - If you are experiencing the black dots issue on Nvidia hardware, Proton 3.16-9 isn't affected by the white launcher and black dots issue. Recommended: Enable DXVK by adding
PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%
via your Steam launch options in order to boost performance for this old Proton release
EQ2 works beautifully on Linux - better performance and more stable than the Windows release when using DXVK. Highly recommended.

Works smoothly provided you use Proton 5.0-10. You may experience the White Launcher issue on newer versions of Proton
Added dxvk.conf
You can force ANISOTROPIC FILTERING when using an NVIDIA card by creating a plain text file called dxvk.conf in the main EQ2 game folder and adding the following two lines...
d3d11.samplerAnisotropy=16
d3d9.samplerAnisotropy=16
To revert back to previous settings, simply remove the .conf file.
Runs great ootb via Proton 5.0-10 on Intel and AMD GPU with Vulkan support. RADV_PERFTEST=aco %command% recommended, but not mandatory.
DXVK 1.7.3 for Nvidia GPU
Nvidia, black dots on some textures: Fix the graphical glitches by installing the newest iteration of DXVK (doitsujin 1.7.3 as of this writing) into your Proton 5.0-10 EQ2 prefix. Patch note quote: "EverQuest 2 Fixed broken cloth rendering on Nvidia. (#1832)"
White / Black EQ2 launcher: Proton 5.13-4 breaks the EQ2 launcher due to a regression. Codeweavers is aware of the issue and it might get fixed with the next Proton release. You can still click on "play" in order to start the game, if you know where the "play" button is located at in the launcher. The elements in the launcher are still clickable, even though you can't see them.

Some artifacts on certain textures (black dots).
Had existing eq2*.ini-files that was configured for wined3d. Steam Play defaults to dxvk, which crashes on start with this ini (with: failed to create d3d device). If you remove those ini-files and let the game recreate it, it works great with dxvk enabled.
Constant crashes with default proton config
Some objects are covered with black raster
Crashes after ~20min of gameplay
msxml3, corefonts, d3dx9_36 thru Winetricks , Courtesy Of Unknown
Proton 4.11.8 cause game to crash every 20~30min , hard reset needed .
If stability issue simply reverse to an older proton release , i reverse to 4.2-9 , the game does not quit properly and kept running but is perfectly stable while playing .

Everything worked ootb, no issue , suggest you put at least some Anti aliasing to get ingame fonts perfectly clean .I notice a frame drop only once and it did not affect the experience at all (lasted less than 0.5s).The game run a little slower than on win 10 but not by much .

Launcher, logging in, downloading game assets, character creation, game play on a server do work. Graphics, audio and input all work fine. Even maximal settings all work. However, the game crashes after about 10 minutes of play in random locations and at random times.

Runs very well, as long as I don't turn on shadows. Note though that there's a very minor bug in the alternate advancement window, where I can't adjust the XP/AA slider. It's stuck on 50/50, which luckily is fine by me. Otherwise everything seems to work. I have about 50 hours of playtime on two different characters.

Game launcher works, updating works, login works, character creation works, login character works. Running around for a little bit works, but then the game crashes to desktop. The game runs very smooth, it just happens to crash very often.

Runs out of the box since the last proton beta. Managed to log in load a character and play for a bit.

Game Does Not Launch At All on Linux Mint 17

LaunchPad.exe crashes immediately. No error messages. Crash report sent to developers tho.

Worked flawlessly.

Runs very well. Minor graphical artifacts in some areas, but those are hardly noticable. The marketplace displays an error about being temporarily unavailable, but works just fine anyway. Performance is quite good. Very playable.
