Played with GE-Proton9-26, 60fps smooth and stable experience from beginning to end. Never had a drop in the framerate. Perfect experience.

Works fine out of the box
Played through the game twice and played the endless mode for about 2h, all with no issues

Works will with minimal tweaking
Had to crank my graphics settings to medium

Game works well except for the audio bug that I described
Do not know what causes this but sometimes when I have my headphones on and I start the game the audio of whole system starts crackling. I do not know how to fix it since restarting game does nothing. I have to switch to speakers and back to headphones if I want to remove crackling from rest of the system. Unfortunatelly when I turn game back on with headphones whole crackling starts anew. Only thing that helps if I want to play with headphones is to restart PC and pray that it won't happen. It's 50/50 situation.
Works. No tinkering required.

Most levels are fine but on some levels the framerate drops below 40 FPS. On the corn farm level it dropped to 7 FPS. I had to lower the shadows to low and resolutaio scale to get some playable FPS. On like 70% of levels I get 120-144FPS.
gamemoderun %command% -high -USEALLAVALIABLECORES

No difference between the three modes
In some alternative Proton modules (the ones provided by Steam) as usual, the gamepad may not set the keyboard and mouse to fully work (only menu but not in game).
Lowered shadow settings to minimum and downscaling res to 75%
Systemic crash on loading screen just after the first level. It's impossible to continue.
Some Proton modules may lead to hard reset. Be careful.
The official Valve support answer on this matter:
"Hello,
I understand your concern and let me clarify this one for you.
Steam for Linux is currently only supported on the latest version of 64-bit Ubuntu LTS with Unity, Gnome, or KDE desktops.
If you are running another distribution of Linux, 32-bit Ubuntu, or an older version of Ubuntu we will not be able to provide support. We recommend you install the latest version of 64-bit Ubuntu for the best Steam experience on Linux.
If you wish to attempt to run Steam on a different distribution or version, it's best that you use Github to discuss them with our developers and other Linux users.
You can create a free Github account.
Once signed up and logged in you can visit our Github and post your questions directly to the Linux Community and our developers.
Steam Support Renai"
Unbelievable and appalling, considering that they love Linux only when their own business comes down the road (they have Linux servers, probably with the RHEL branch) so they should support Debian, RHEL and derivates, and SLES and derivates FIRST than any kind of popularity sh*t over knowledge. Well, I guess this is it! We learned and swallowed the hard corporate truth. Stay safe and avoid Ubuntu and Canonical clowns.

Runs flawlessly out of the box.

Tried multiple Proton versions
Low FPS in some areas
Turning shadows to low or changing proton versions didn't help. I would recommend waiting for a proton patch

With some tinkering on the graphics options it's definitely possible to help the game run at mostly 60fps by compromising on some details and effects, but most of the bigger fights will suffer from considerable drops. Midway through the campaign, and increasingly more often towards the end, the game also seems to suffer from some heavy stuttering, locking the game in place for half a second here and there. Despite this, the game is definitely playable and doesn't seem to present any other kind of problems. I haven't experienced any kind of crashes whatsoever.
RADV_PERFTEST=gpl gamemoderun %command%
Unplayable due to performance issues.
Insane slowdown on specific levels. Especially after chapter 2
Really bad, performance (hardware unrelated) on roughly every third level. Below 15fps on some. Writers of positive reports may not have played the game for as long as i did. Since the first half of the game runs smoothly.
gamemoderun mangohud obs-gamecapture %command%
Frame drops in open areas
It runs mostly fine, but when You enter open area full of detail, it cuts framerate in half. Set View distance to 'near' for more stable performance.
Default horizontal sensitivity is insanely low
During 3-2, the game freezes sometimes for a second.
Game crashes after 3-2. The next level ("Gutter") can be selected from the menu though and loads without problems
mangohud %command%
Most levels are okay, but some levels require the game to run on the lowest settings and resolution in order to get passable frame rates.
Game will crash on level 3-2. I used Proton 6.3-8 and it stopped crashing. Didn't experience anymore crashes.
In the first level just lowering the shadows one level from max would get me decent fps. Eventually once the levels got bigger and longer though, even setting everything to low would only get me ~30 fps.
Although maybe playable if you reduce the resolution, I just find this unacceptable. There are other boomer shooters that are both better and don't have massive performance issues, such as dusk, amid evil, or ultrakill.
Game works fine with default settings until level 3-2 (Cornfield), where it always crashes during loading. Switching to ProtonGE does not help, in fact it makes the game not launch at all.
I was afraid the bad framerate would make the game unplayable, but after turning only the shadows to lowest, the game ran fine.
The framerate was very low until i set the shadows to the lowest setting. Other settings were left at high and the framerate was good as long as the shadows remained all the way down
Finished game with intermittent performance problems
Sometimes, after dying or loading a save, performance would be stuck on 7 fps. Other times performance would suddenly drop to around 30 for no apparent reason. Reloading saves can help. In other cases I had to resort to lowering all settings to the bottom (including resolution scale) to get an acceptable FPS again
Works very well
The performance was very good in the first chapter but later levels feature frequent FPS drops making it hard to recommend.
Game slows down to 20-30 fps in certain levels, starting from chapter 2.
It's possible, that the aforementioned slowdown is due to some graphical settings, but I had no luck switching them back and forth. In comparison, game ran very smoothly on windows on the same levels.
Works very well OOTB no tinkering
Had to turn down some graphics settings for some more fps, but it isn't significant, the game works very well OOTB
After each graphic settings change you need to reload the level otherwise you get low framerate. This is exclusive to GE's fork of Proton.
Using Proton out of the box causes audio to crackle, GE's fork fixes this but you need to reload the level everytime you change some video settings. I also had to play with shadows on low, but given my hardware that could be the reason. Once everything is set up you should be good to go!
The game fires up and loads just fine, but the low framerate renders it nigh unplayable. Turning off all extraneous effects, and setting everything to medium low with 30% render resolution is about the only way I've been able to achieve a very unstable 60 FPS.
If the framerate issue could be fixed, it'd be perfect. The game installs and loads with practically no extra effort required. But as is, I can't currently recommend it.
Solved by lowering the settings in graphics options. Rendering to 50% and all settings at Medium, Grain effect off. -> game is running smooth.
Worked great, played for a few minutes just to see.
Had one hard full-system crash, but it's early access so assuming it'll be fine.
