wmp9 required
I needed to delete .local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1202540 and made it fresh (by running it once and because I previously used another version of proton)
Fullscreen is a bit buggy. It also tears
Videos require tinkering
use Konsole input this command to install wmp9
flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks 1202540 wmp9
GE-proton 9-10 is also ok, you dont need to use official proton older version i didn't set launch options, vedio and main menu no any issue
Animated cutscenes have no audio
Without Proton GE, the videos won't even play at all
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks 1202540 wmp9
Been 3 years since I got this running on a Linux desktop. However using that same setup today on my Steam Deck no longer works, and the critical change was reported by @eewsam: switch to Proton 5.0-10. After that, you'll need to install wmp9 using protontricks and change the launch options. It then seems to run perfectly fine. Note that Proton 5.13-6 doesn't work, and you'll likely need to remove that if you previously installed it as the major versions being the same seems to cause some sort of conflict; or at least it did for me.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
install wmp9
If wmp9 is not installed, the main menu will be black, and the videos in the game will not play and will be skipped automatically. The videos are important part of the game's plot.

Proton 6.3-8 with wmp9 and PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% used to be able to get the videos to play, but now for some unknown reason the videos do not play.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Downgrade to 6.3-8 (so it's old enough for protontricks to install wm9) and run the game at least once to create the prefix. (It'll be black text on a black background, good luck exiting it.)
With protontricks from Discover:
flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks 1202540 wmp9
If it errors with "permission denied", replace all the symlinks with the file they point to, make them writeable and try again:
cd /home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1202540/pfx
mv drive_c drive_c_original
cp -r -L drive_c_original drive_c
chmod -R ugo+rwX drive_c
flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks 1202540 wmp9
The wm9 installer should pop up, click through until it finishes (with an error, for me).
Start the game, and if the menu now has an animated background you are good to go.
If it's still a black screen, double check for PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 as a launch option.
installed protontricks using this guide: https://simpler-website.pages.dev/html/2021/1/protontricks/
the below steps have to be performed in order:
- set proton version to 3.16-9
- ran the game once to create the folders
- ran "protontricks --no-background-wineserver 1202540 wmp9" in terminal
- the videos now work
Without the video fix, you will miss many plot-essential videos in the course of the game, without it even indicating they should have played, so you won't know you missed anything, and will become confused. It's absolutely essential to get the videos working before playing.
You will know the videos are broken if the title screen is blacked out - it should be a bright white title screen with a faint drifting pattern of outer space. If you see that, the videos work.
Great game but has big issues running on Proton.
For some reason the title screen appears blank on Proton until beating the game (where the title screen art changes).
During both minigrames later in the game, the screen flickers immensely and may be a problem for those with epilepsy.
There are an array of animations throughout the game that can range anywhere from 1-7 minutes that Proton will not play. It will simply skip over these videos, even after the section to view these animations is unlocked. These animations provide context for the game plot, and so the player is missing vital information by missing these.
Works perfectly well with recent proton but install of plugins needed to see the videos (the videos are important !)
The videos didn't work out of the box (and they are important for the plot !), but following instructions here I was able to install the relevant plugin and get them to work
I'm submitting this report a few months after I played, but I figured better late than never. So memory is a bit shaky. That being said I do remember the game running well aside from the videos, but that the videos were easy to fix by following other people's instructions (I don't remember the specifics myself unfortunately)
Once set windowed mode, can't go back to fullscreen, need to restart game
Japanese font missing, tried installing corefonts but no use. Chinese & English works well.
Customization: Proton-5.9-GE-8-ST
Finally got this working. Needs an older version of Proton (not sure why) and wmp9 installed via protontricks to get the videos working.
protontricks 1202540 wmp9
No improvement from previous reviewer after many tweaks
I have the same issues as the previous reviewer after applying a number of tweaks, such as protontricks 1202540 corefonts d3dx9_36 dotnet40 ffdshow quartz vcrun6
and installing LAVFilters.
While you can (supposedly) play through the whole game you will be missing out on important cutscenes.
Going fullscreen or changing the resolution will result in a back screen. The game seems to still be playing but you will not be able to see what is going on. (Remember to to save often as it's kinda hard to save with a black screen.)
After playing for a bit I noticed that cutscenes is skipped over and does not play (Might be because of missing wmv playback.)

The game has a few issues with a black screen on the menu and while changing the resolution but this doesn't seem to affect the gameplay.
The main screen is black, you should be able to see the buttons by hovering over the buttons with your mouse. They are in the middle of the screen.
