As others said: Rename AoKHD.exe to Launcher.exe, then it's working fine. Still had some minor issues, e.g. the flickering chat window.
Remove the default Mono runtime and install a patched version from GitHub https://github.com/redmcg/wine-mono/wiki#with-protontricks
Apart from needing to install a modified mono runtime the game runs fine and I can also use my Thrustmaster T.A320 joystick without any problems. ED Market Connector is also Linux compatible, so I have everything I need.
It's running fine initially, although with a very low resolution and low details. After setting the resolution to Full HD and exiting the game it won't start anymore. So you can run it, if graphics don't bother you.
Game doesn't start at all
After pressing Play it's trying to start, but it stops after a few seconds. It's not even opening a window or anything, it's completely refusing to start.
Working great out of the box, no glitches, no errors, can alt-tab without problems.
Runs great with latest Proton 6.3, didn't test controllers
Sometimes after alt-tab the game runs in windowed mode and and keys like Tab and Escape no longer work.
Runs way better with Steam Play than the native version
The native option was missing some graphical options, I couldn't even move it to the correct display. With Proton it's running great.
Running great out of the box
Make sure to choose "SSAA 0,5x" in the graphical options for a big FPS boost, even more than without SSAA.
As the other guy mentioned the game itself is running quite good, although the screen sometimes goes black. After hitting Escape it comes back.
Runs great, but I had to install it on my ext4 partition. When I installed it on my NTFS partition I got Wine errors that said some files are not owned by me.
Works fine with Xbox One controller, good performance
Had to Alt-Tab multiple times until the cursor appeared on the desktop, sometimes the game suddenly moved to the second screen and couldn't switch back
Sometimes the game felt a bit laggy even though it was running at 60 fps, but apart from that and the Alt-Tab issues it was fine.
