My DS4 doesn't work until I unplug and plug it back in while in the game. Otherwise, no problems
Has weird slowdowns in the Nico's shop
AMD driver on windows crashes all the time (I blame the game). Not a problem on Linux.
Needs tinkering, but could played OK. RealTone cable works. Delay was noticeable but tolerable. Haven't tried the CDLC.
5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
I have used https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom
- Run
WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/221680/pfx winetricks sound=alsa
- Run
WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/221680/pfx winecfg
. There, change Windows version to Windows 10, and in Audio tab, set Input device toRocksmith USB Guitar Adapter
. I have set both Input and Voice Input devices, I'm not sure if this is necessary. - Disable
Rocksmith Guitar Adapter
device in PulseAudio configuration - Follow https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=44862 to properly configure your PulseAudio.
- Run the game once. Edit
Rocksmith.ini
. DisableExclusiveMode
andWin32UltraLowLatencyMode
. Then, you'll have to play withLatencyBuffer
andMaxOutputBufferSize
to find the values that both don't produce clicking and lagging and result in low enough delay. I have leftForceWDM

If you misconfigure your Audio, you may experience lags, crackling, or latency.
Sometimes, on the start, sound is buggy. Restart helps.
I have given game a thumbs up, despite question being about 'typical gamer', because this game is a special edge case of the Wine gaming, and having it run tolerably, pretty closely to Windows performance, with a RealTone cable support, is great.
Overall, I don't believe you could play more difficult songs comfortably, but as a warm-up or just for fun - it could work.
I mostly blame the delay on my laptop's CPU - I believe with a better hardware you would get better performance.
I have tried few things from other reports, which didn't work for me:
- Changing Z: drive from root to the ~/.steam/steam didn't work for me - game just wasn't starting.
- Starting game with PulseAudio killed. Audio works, but sound is very distorted and insanely laggy from the very start.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Significant slowdown in main menu, stage 3, 7 and 8. After 8, I enabled PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 flag, it fixed the issue, though it broke the steam overlay. Thankfully, my DualShock 4 controller kept working. Didn't stop the issues when defeating bosses, but it's just a short animation, nothing serious.
It's an old game made in a janky engine, give it some slack, it doesn't work properly even on Windows.

Rarely, there is a shader issue which turns dust and smoke into really colorful clouds. Happens only on some stages, usually goes away quickly.
Very rarely, the game hangs your entire computer. Happens once every 3-4 month, not more often.
You definetely need to make sure that either you or your gamemode disables the split lock mitigation - see other comments or game issue in Proton repository. Otherwise, it's perfectly playable. Mods also work.

There is a Vulkan error during the opening cutscene. However, you can bypass it if you open another window on top of game's window, and then everything works fine.
Haven't tested online yet, since it seems to be unstable at the moment. Also, game is (pseudo) forced to 720p resolution, even with fullscreen mode and higher resolutions, but that's not a Linux-specific problem.
