Picking Mai Natsume crashes the game, but only if YOU, the linux user, picks her. You can play online with people who pick her just fine, as long as you don't pick her, or try to pick her in training mode / use her in story mode. This generally means you won't be able to lab against her unless you find some workaround for this or get people to lab with you in networked play, or you have a windows machine to lab against her on.
Did multiple tests. Other player can pick Mai and everything will go fine. Ran even smoother than on my (slightly weaker) windows PC.
Nobody plays Mai anyways lmao, you'll be fine
Its a great game. I've already played many hours off of linux, several on, and plan to play many more.
The game reliably crashes if you, the Linux player (not anyone else in netplay) select the character Mai Natsume in the character select screen. This DOES NOT prevent you from training against her as you can start training vs another character and then swap the opponent to her character via the training menu.
Thus, this is essentially an upgrade, as Mai players are cringe.
As long as YOU don't pick Mai, you're fine. If they pick Mai, its ok.
Game has to be set to launch in fullscreen or else the window won't appear at all in my testing, and cinematics MUST be disabled for the window to appear / not be a black screen, which as far as I can tell just turns off the videos that play on the main menu. This can be done via steps I got from the other proton report on this game:
"Edit .local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/216890/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/BloodBowlChaos/Config.xml and set 1 and 0 Windowing:Other"
Mouse cursor flickers sometimes while in-game, but not to any degree that bothered me, and it was still easy to read mouse tooltips.
You have to force fullscreen prior to launch via the game's config files or it won't work, and trying to enter windowed mode after that will break the game.
Tested in an online league with my girlfriend - we've played two games now, no issues. She's on windows, so that works fine too.
No issues other than the mouse flickering mentioned above.
DO NOT USE ANY PROTON VERSION AFTER 5.13-6.
In every single release after that, alt tabbing will break the game.
Closest I could get was if I used a steam account in certain versions of proton.
Also tried lutris install instructions listed elsewhere, and installing as non steam game and then running via compat data there.

Whether in training or online, seems to crash, at least once per multi hour playsession, sometimes frequently back to back, other times rarely. Unsure what's causing it. I've tried using default proton and experimental.
Crashing as noted still happens, but nothing additional.

After playing more (48 hours at time of writing), I am now of the opinion that this is too frustrating to be playable or recommendable. Crashing every 10-20 games has a tendency to get you shadow-banned from matchmaking, in addition to being extremely jarring and completely interrupting the flow of the game. This is in spite of the game running at a flawless 60 fps even at the highest settings.
I've tried turning down the graphics settings, verifying files, etc. I'll update this if i find a solution. Otherwise, I just can't recommend it like this.
Outside of the stability issues mentioned above online works fantastic.
Got to the splash screen where you press a button and it takes you to the main menu. Then it hangs, and eventually closes.
