Lowered gyro sensitivity to default 100
With default Proton settings, the game will not allow you to enable 3D Acceleration, which locks the resolution to 800x600 and makes the graphics look quite ugly. Changing the Proton version to 3.16-9 fixes this issue completely, and the game will start up in proper fullscreen with 3D Acceleration already enabled. Recommend setting the resolution to High (1024x768).
Note that the Custom Cursor option doesn't work properly, as the regular system cursor is still rendered (giving the appearance of 2 cursors). Leave it disabled.
Installs and runs flawlessly. No issues playing the tutorial or online
Flawless out of the box. Have been using Proton/Wine to play this game for years and have never had an issue.
Game does not support windowed mode at all (applies to Windows as well), so I use gamescope to force the game to run in a window.
Game defaults to fullscreen at a low resolution, so you may have to navigate the menus semi-blind to set your resolution initially.
Completely flawless from day 1. Running at 4K with the High graphics preset and the game holds a solid 60fps. No complaints at all.
Strange input delays when using my keyboard, particularly when pressing multiple keys at once. May not be a Proton issue, as I saw similar issues mentioned by people playing on Windows. Switched to an Xbox One controller and have had no problems since.
Artifacting occurs with certain graphical effects, such as fire and the flash of some spells. Particularly severe in a few of the "flashback" levels and cutscenes. Does not occur on every such effect, but where it does occur it is consistently reproducible.
The game does support the Deck's native resolution, but HUD elements will be slightly stretched vertically. (I chose to play at 1280x720 to avoid this.) Additionally, the game has a tendency to lag when loading certain areas. These are both issues with the game itself and have nothing to do with Proton.
Played at 3840x2160 (4K) resolution, using an Xbox One controller.
I manually set Proton 6.3-8 at some point and never bothered to change it, but I wouldn't expect newer versions of Proton to have any regressions.
Occasional artifacting on water or fire effects
Some glitchy artifacting on and around fire effects
Only tested with Proton 6.3, though I doubt newer versions would introduce any problems.
No tweaks needed, just install and configure settings as desired.
Screen tearing, even with VSync enabled
Forced Proton instead of running native version
No audio on native version. Works as expected with Proton
Seems flawless, aside from the occasional crash. I was able to complete the first level of Journey Mode with no issues during gameplay.
Tutorial visuals do not appear, instead displaying a color bar test pattern.
Enabling borderless fullscreen caused a crash. Exclusive fullscreen worked as expected
The first two times the game was launched, a loading screen appeared and then closed, and the game did not continue to launch. The game successfully launched after that, and subsequent launches worked. No changes to Proton configuration were made between any of these launches.
Tested using Proton 6.3-5.
eval $( echo "%command%" | sed "s/.exe/\ \(thpatch_en\).exe/" )
When using thcrap to patch the game to run in English, the default setting to keep the patcher running after the game closes prevents Steam from properly detecting the game has closed. See the instructions below for how to remedy this.
Some text is on the smaller side, particularly on the Deck's built-in screen. Still very readable to my eyes, but YMMV.
Game may crash if you select a resolution higher than the screen you are playing on. This is a bug with the game, not with Proton. I recommend choosing either of the Borderless options.
I used a thcrap standalone patch to get the game running in English, as there are some bugs that make the regular version difficult to get working properly. You'll need to be in Desktop Mode to set this up fully.
- Download the standalone patch for Touhou 18. Extract the contents to the game's install directory (alongside
th18.exe
and other game files). - Rename
th18_custom (thpatch_en).exe
tocustom (thpatch_en).exe
. This ensures launching the settings works properly with the custom launch option. - Set the launch options in the game properties to the string specified in this report. When you launch the game, the commands it executes will effectively "rewrite" the launch command Steam would normally issue to point at the patched .exe rather than the default.
- At this point, you should be able to launch the game through Steam and it will download the newest version of the patcher + patch files automatically, launching the game afterwards. However, I highly recommend you launch the game in Desktop Mode at least once before returning to gaming mode to disable the option that reads
Keep the updater running in background
. Otherwise, the patcher window will remain open after you quit the game, causing Steam to not fully recognize that the game has closed and forcing you to manually exit the game. Changing this setting in Gaming Mode won't work properly, as the patcher doesn't save changed settings if it is forced to close. Uncheck the box in Desktop Mode then click the X in the window titlebar to close it, and it should retain the settings on all subsequent launches regardless of mode.
Additional notes:
- I have not tested with other Proton versions, so I am unsure if Experimental is actually required for this all to work. I haven't noticed any issues using it so I haven't bothered to change it.
- If you have a different patch set you want to use (e.g. a language other than English), you may be able to use brliron's StandalonePatchesGenerator to create a suitable patcher .exe. Modify the instructions above as needed to reflect any differences in file names from the premade patches.
