Launch options, force experimental, disable Steam Overlay then you'll be golden, everything works great then.
NOSTARTUP SKIPINTRO
Disable Steam Overlay for the game. As long as it was enabled, it always immediately froze when opening the game. After disabling Steam Overlay, everything works flawlessly on Proton Experimental and with launch options.
With the necessary changes made, the game runs smooth. Rare crashes are not a big problem due to frequent checkpoints.
Disable Steam Overlay or game crashes immediately after startup. After this, I had some rare crashes but overall could play just fine.
When playing, after the first time Alt-Tabbing, the keyboard would not return to giving inputs to the game, thus making playing a bit harder. Simply don't Alt-Tab then you should be fine.
Fun RPG with some good mechanical choices and some bad. Overall it's very enjoyable and can offer quite a bit of playtime if you want it to.
Mouse control is usually completely smooth. Sometimes the mouse stops tracking for a fraction of a second randomly before going back to being smooth. This is a very small issue as fine mouse movement really isn't important unless you play as a ranger and even then it's not a real problem.
The menus are somewhat stuttery with the cursor but gameplay is completely smooth.
Excellent game that works out of the box.
Vsync seemed to be broken as it led to noticable stutters and frame-freezing. Keeping it turned off meant performance was perfect.
1. switch to Proton 3.7-8 -> perfect experience, 2. rare crashes, but save system is very forgiving, so that's not really a problem.
Initially, there was no sound at all apart from the inital logo screen. To fix this, go the game directory, open a terminal and execute ln -s "The Last Campfire_Data/StreamingAssets"
. This creates a symlink to the assets folder for the missing sound files. While I don't know why sound stopped working initially, since doing this I've had zero problems.
Again, necessary fix by creating a symlink in the game's directory: ln -s "The Last Campfire_Data/StreamingAssets"
Without tinkering, if the audio is missing, the game looses a major part of its charm since both the music as well as especially the narration are key to the experience.

Game crashes when trying to save, citing a buffer overrun error from wine. Searched the net far and wide, couldn't find a solution so far, will update if found.
I played the game in one evening for completion of the Splinter Cell series' sake. The performance is poor, I would usually have dropped it.
When starting the game, Ubisoft Connect launches and will endlessly search for patches, if there is access to the internet. To prevent this, disable WIFI or your ethernet connection before starting the game. Once the login screen in Ubisoft Connect comes up, re-enable the internet connection, log in and then the game starts normally.
Strong screen tearing. Annoying but not actually problematic for playing.
Mouse movement felt somewhat inconsistent at times, but this was very minor.
Strong screen tearing as well as unlikely bad FPS (15-25 most of the time) on low settings. If the game wasn't so short and easy, I would have considered it unplayable.
Game crashes not only itself but entire Plasma Desktop when trying to launch.
