Splash screen then crash
I've tried with the proton beta branch and current branch, stable mesa, git mesa. I'm surprised, as others seem to get the game working
I had to figure out I didn't have Vulkan drivers
Temporary review to clear my previous crash report
During the first start, the screen size is not detected properly. This is only during the first start.
Stuttering at the beginning of each level. Smooth sailing for the rest of the game.
Requires Vulkan, USE_WINED3D=1
flag breaks the game.
I disabled cloud save
After navigating the levels a lot, I managed to make two different levels overlap (as if a ghost one appeared on top of the real one)
Resuming game at second play session, I found my progress and settings were reset. See "customization" line of this report for fix.
Works as native
Make sure to enable steam overlay and Steam Input to get your controller working
Game doesn't work with Logitech F310 and F710 controllers
The game starts with a splash screen "controller recommended." But you quickly realize you won't be able to play the game with a controller as the directional stick axies are inverted. It seems to be a problem on windows as well. People posted workarounds online, but I couldn't get them to work (maybe because they only work on Windows?). I had to refund.
An absolute shame since I've read a lot of positive words on the game and otherwise Outer Wild seems to work wonderfully with Proton.
Workaround I tried are:
- Use "Dinput" controller hardware switch
- Rebind in Steam controller settings and "Force On" steam input in game settings
- Turn on/off steam and computer
- Hotplug the controller when the game is already running
The crashes can potentially set back progression a lot
Is an issue with the Windows version as well: fullscreen can only be some upscalled low resolution with blurry interpolation. I wish the pixels were sharper.
Also had issues switching resolutions: requires restart
I got 2 crashes in 27 hours of gameplay :)
(1) Audio garbling after long play sessions (2) minor mouse drift when moving view/cursor, doesn't interfere with gameplay.
Otherwise plays like native, very low system requirements.
I think the frame drops seriously removes from the enjoyment of the game
Had to use latest version of proton to get controller working. Note that the game has poor controls in general, but that's not related to Steam play.
Usually smooth, but certain places (next to gold piles) have MASSIVE frame drops, lowering graphic settings didn't help. It also makes navigating menus very hard. In those places, it's barely playable.
Crash at startup, fixed with Proton 5.13. Crash once when starting new game after credit roll.
On top of that, the game is not that good to begin with :(
Without WINED3D, I would get white flickering over the whole screen all the time
Only in the overworld:
- Very annoying white flickering at some level poles (only a minority)
- Two caves entrances had a solid white outline
- A place you would only traverse once where there was white flickering covering the whole screen
Sometimes I got crashes at the end of levels, requiring a restart. Progress was saved. Three times, the game crashed in the middle of a level, resulting in progress loss.
