First off, i use experimental for basically everything so just use what works, onto the workshop mods... at first there was no issue with the launch option and mods worked straight away, did some distro hopping, still worked, had some codec problems that i was too lazy to fix and jumped back to mint, launch option still worked fine, and now a couple days ago i tried out garuda linux, everything was good except for the launch option. back to mint again, to my surprise it was the same as on garuda, started tinkering my ass off, spent hours. shit was not working, and the fing winhttp.dll override was in the game files. then i found a 10 month old post here, the last thing he wrote was to specifically uninstall downpour dlc, launch the game without the dlc once (it will do some resyncing and mods should work) then u can reinstall the dlc, all that work for me to find such a specific fix in the. and so i say, gladly and with utmost respect, i feel u and i thank you greatfully, Necromancer.

If it doesn't work for you, try adding PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 to the launch options

I'm surprised others had any issues at all. Aside from the possibility of some extra frames if you were trying to break them, this is seamless out of the box. I have >150 hours in Rain World.

the game on its own runs perfectly fine. make sure you have mesa-vulkan-drivers:i386 (Debian) installed otherwise you'll get unity crashes
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b" %command%
had to set compatibility to windows 7 and add winhttp as a library to make mods work
keyboard wouldnt work for some reason, but i play on controller so im fine with that

Install and play with stock Proton 9
No tweaking needed, no launch options, DLC and mods work out of the box. No audio or performance issues. Logitech F710 gamepad works perfectly. Only played a few minutes but initial impression is flawless.

Random FPS drops, Using the Dev Tools, the fps drops when the game cannot find room files. No graphical problems.
Modding also doesn´t seem to work, i have no idea why or how to fix it, wich is kinda sad. Although the DLC works, i didn´t test co-op.

Runs better than it did on Windows, without any stability, graphics, or audio problems.

Typical gamer probably wouldn't be able to use mods and dGPU without some tinkering, but mostly it works nicely
WINEDLLOVERRIDES=winhttp=n,b mangohud gamemoderun %command%
Made Proton emulate Windows 7 for Rain World
Had to install lib32-nvidia-utils and lib32-mangohud to run on NVIDIA dGPU with MangoHUD

WINEDLLOVERRIDES=winhttp=n,b %command%
After the additional agrument to the lauch command, everything just works. If you don't add the WINEDLLOVERRIDE, mods won't work at all. The game works just fine without mods, but you'd miss cool stuff
,
Custom proton is not necessary. I chose it arbitrarly (to get logs in my console when running the game via proton from a terminal)

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b" %command%
Game works perfectly, and workshop mods work too if you use the launch option (didnt test if it works without it but the other reports say to use this for workshop mods)
If the game freezes on something like "Downloading workshop mods (50.00%)" this also can happen on Windows, simply shift+tab, click on the wrench (workshop) and subscribe/unsubscribe to any workshop item, then just wait

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b" %command%
Rain World works well with Wine/Proton with some audio crackling. I cannot verify the expansion pack as I don't have it. Controller support works. You can skip the launch command if you don't plan on using workshop support (same boat, but for other people planning on using it.)

The Mods from the Workshop are recognized, but the Mods wouldn't work unless I used a workaround with Protontricks.
I only ran into a Problem when trying to use Mods, the Game otherwise worked without a Problem

gamemoderun WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b" %command%
Perfect

the base game runs amazing out of the box but some mods and dlc content required a little bit of tinkering. but overall very easy to setup
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b" %command%
some entities would spontaneously expand randomly. but this was rare and would be fixed by entering another room.
save slot 2 was broken (game said it was corrupted) but all i had to do was locate the save file and delete it (if youre having this issue do it while the game is running or steam will pull the corrupted save file from the cloud when launching)
crashes can happen when playing for long periods of time (4-5 hour sessions) but these usually happen while loading (e.g. loading save, sleeping, continuing to next cycle) and not while actually playing
glad that peak fiction can run well on proton. even if some mods and dlc content required fixes to get running fully
gamemoderun %command%

Game does not even open window
not working very well

PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command%
Controllers got mixed up when playing in the PVP mode, leading to 2 people controlling the same character, but campaign worked perfectly.

Added a DLL Override for winhttp.dll
to allow workshop mods to apply
Adding a DLL override for winhttp.dll is required for modding. Everything else works perfectly

it works perfectly
:D

The game performed well and I was able to play it mostly the same way I would on a normal PC with a gamepad. The only real minor annoyance is that in order to use mods a bit of tinkering is required otherwise all mods except the DLC will be broken and not be able to be activated. Adding the custom launch command listed in this review fixes that issue.
Besides that minor inconvience with mods this game performs amazingly on the deck and Linux in general with little to no issues whatsoever.

RW works fine. Modding is still sometimes a bit fiddly. This was the only method that worked for me, this time.
Change to Windows version 7, in "libraries" added winhttp
Some minor crackling
Sometimes freezes briefly (unsure if downpour issue in general)
Reinstalled my OS to a newer version and had difficulty getting mods to work... again. Previous fixes did not work this time.
Things that did not work to make the mods show up properly for me:
Reinstalling the game entirely multiple times, deleting all of rain world's files manually, repairing files both with previous fix as well as normally, trying proton 7, 9, and experimental, trying PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 and/or WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b" %command%, trying the protonfixes method on its own, deleting workshop folder, manually disabling and enabling all mods from ingame menu, disabling and enabling all mods from steam RW's properties workshop menu, clicked "find best load order" in steam RW's properties workshop menu.
The only thing that did work for me:
Having the proton fix set up, e.g. AgentAvis' notes on this guide :
https://gist.github.com/PJB3005/a7b635f171bd34f18a28885afa8f6e8e
Then uninstalling SPECIFICIALLY only the downpour DLC, launching RW vanilla once, reinstalling DLC, and then launching the newly DLC'd game.
Suddenly mods appeared properly.
Did not even have to disable mods in menu or anything.
No idea why this worked.
I am absolutely certain it was this step, I did each test separately. Honestly, slightly baffled.

Likely will work perfectly out of the box. I initially was unable to get it running, but after I reset Steam and allowed it to update, it launched without issue.

Fails to launch with various versions of Proton
Tried multiple configurations, such as -dx12
, disabling Steam Cloud sharing, and using different Proton versions. Game was working fine on my NVIDIA RTX 2060, but completely fails to launch after I upgraded to an AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE.

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b" %command%
use "WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b" %command%" for workshop mods and use proton 7 if you don't support vulkan

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b"
couldn't get it to launch at first, but was missing the lib32-nvidia-utils, had most of the other 32 bit deps, so if you can't get to launch look at your lib32 deps

Great game, occasional graphical bugs only appeared once every three hours. Only had to restart once in 23 hours of playtime
In order to use mods, you need to add a winhttp dll
Unknown if due to mods. Occasionally when going through a vent, on exit for 1 frame the slugcat's body was stretched across the screen. In one instance, the tail on my slugcat dissapeared, and several enemies and climbing poles were completely missing portions.
Game does not natively support a 1280x800 resolution, used a mod called "Sharpener" to override the windowed mode resolution.
Used steam remote play.
Because the DLC is classified as a "mod" it may be unplayable. Not Tested.

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b"
Set WINEDLLOVERRIDES
to allow mods to work

Runs better than on Windows. Well, it might be slower, but it's not noticeable, and linux is objectively better, so it seems better
Local multiplayer is perfect

Fullscreen causes this game to occasinally freeze the entire system. Disabling "NVIDIA on-demand" and selecting "NVIDIA (performance mode)" instead in "PRIME Profiles" in NVIDA settings solves this issue
Protontricks are only required to make the workshop mods work. The main game and the DLC work with just proton out of the box. Tinkering with NVIDIA settings was required to make the game stable

The game runs perfectly fine with just proton in windowed mods. Protontricks and custom launch options make the mods run fine as well
PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%
only required for running mods
Fullscreen occasonally freezes the entire machine
making the game run in windowed mod fixes them
It requires some tinkering to run; it requires a lot of tinkering to run with mods. An OK experience overall

Works OOTB though it crashes my system if I alt-tab or switch windows.
Alt-Tabbing makes my computer freeze and I have to force restart.

would not display at highest resolution
Workshop mods display in the remix menu, but do not run/have any remix options (jolly co-op still appears to work)
Worked perfectly OOTB with standard Proton

gamemoderun %command%
change windows version to win7 and add winhttp to get mods working (souce, rainworld discord/https://gist.github.com/PJB3005/a7b635f171bd34f18a28885afa8f6e8e)
game didn't have my old saves due to an old update change and my nuking of old OS
after adding sharpener you may need to do these fixes to get the config, and the mod (and other mods) working gamemoderun is included as I noted some drops during menuing, presumably is just there, but added it anyways
