Finally made it worked, after many unsuccessful attempts, because this is not the default steam library. Game works well.
When installed to a secondary Steam library, the game will not launch. This can be seen as a black window momentarily appearing and disappearing when attempting to launch the game.
The solution is to create a secondary D:\ drive either through winecfg or by editing the prefix manually. This disk should point to the root directory of the game on your filesystem. Then the game will launch properly.
Following previous reports, works with xbox controller with protontricks, by installing dotnet and adding "protontricks 674520 dotnet40" in the steam launch option
Not far from a solution, as it seems one must skip the launcher and change the executable, as explained here https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=31973. Tried to do so with protonfixes without luck.

Works nicely, you just have to change the resolution in the render.cfg if you want anything other than 960x540.
modify the steamapps/compatdata/356190/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Local Settings/Application Data/WB Games/Shadow of War/render.cfg to change the resolution, otherwise it is kept in 960x540. Gamepad works flawlessly, Xbox One, and performance is very nice.

Black start screen with a long loading (60 seconds or so). Otherwise, the game works flawlessly.

Followed the instruction for media foundation fix and disabling Esync, I also removed the intro vids as explained below. The screen turns black after starting a new game (menu are fine). I used mf-installcab successfully for Devil May Cry 5 but it is a failed report for me on this game.
