Works flawlessly. GPU is RX 6800 via DRI_PRIME, not what steam reports.
Works very well! Might be a bit slower than on windows but game is generally not the pinnacle of performance.
I had serious performance issues nobody else seemed to experience but they are completely fixed with the custom proton version. The game pretty much now runs like in the old times (pre Steam) on Windows 7. I still adhere to the old knowledge of "no settings on ultra" and "restart the game after each match". My launch arguments on the basegame are:
PROTON_USE_D9VK=0 PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command% -nomovies -dev -mod blitzkrieg -novsync -notriplebuffer -refresh 60
Some arguments may or may not help but it works perfectly for me.
Not working with multiple official and GE proton versions
I tried multiple official and GE proton versions but the game would not even open a window before steam reverts to the "play" button. With suggested 5.21-GE-1 the screen would (at least) switch to black and back three times before steam reverts back to the "play" button.
Before the first start I selected Proton 6.3-8 as previous working reports used it. Seems to be working fine. The only problem I have is that the screen at the end of a race is blank. I suppose it should show some stats and rewards?
My wired Xbox 360 controller worked both by plugging it in while the game was running and also when it is plugged in on game launch. I have not tested multiplayer yet.
Additional notes:
- The game works with the RX 580 and also RX 6800 via offloading.
- The high volume of the intro is also a problem on Windows.
Sometimes sounds do not honor the set volume level, so use your system sound settings instead the ones of the game. Not sure if that's a problem on windows too.
There is some general weirdness but I am not sure if that is on Windows too. If you scroll/zoom too fast, sometimes ground tiles/buildings are off their positions. Rarely, there is some flickering. Both problems are fixed by zooming and do not really disturb smooth gameplay. Also, videos of vehicles (in the popups) don't work (might be fixable, but didn't care).
Game crashed once using alt-tab. Please make sure to regularly save regardless.
Gameplay is really smooth in general and the minor visual problems are not really distracting. The sound problem is a bit annoying for your ears but might be able to be avoided by keeping the ingame sound at default settings and managing the volume through your system. Not sure if the alt-tab crash happens a lot because I haven't used it much. Seems to work fine if moving the cursor outside the fullscreen window and losing the focus that way. But save regularly in any case. Have been playing with this setup for 11.3h so far.
Text rendering looks off and fuzzy like it is rendered without smoothing. The gameworld has a similar problem that edges are not rendered great. Generally, everything with transparency seems to have problems like grass or leaves rendering pixel-y.
The game starts, runs and is playable. It did not crash and I could play one hour straight without problems. The weird rendering of text is annoying and also the fuzzy transparency is not great but I have not yet encountered other problems.
Additional info: GPU is an RX 6800 (second GPU) instead of what steam and protondb claims.
Menu there but everything black
Got to the menu twice with Proton 5.0-9. Buttons and text seemed normal but everything else was black, like the avatar that you create at the beginning. Tried some other Proton versions from GloriousEggroll but neither worked and just resulted in a popup box "Sorry, something went wrong, for solutions please visit: ...". Later I was unable to even get to the menu with Proton 5.0-9; even deleting the compatdata did not help anymore.
Not sure what the performance in Windows would be but I am pretty sure it should be better. But with the GE-Proton7-53 it was playable for me. I tried multiple proton versions below this one without success.
Some seemed to work at first but spiraled down to unplayable after like 15 to 30 min (15fps). Now has >160 fps on idle small starter base after launching the game and stays well above 60 but currently not sure what the count is after an hour of playtime.
Only tested with one friend with my game as server. Could not get it to work the other way around but not sure what the issue is (ports should be forwarded). I fowarded 27014-27019 udp.
The game seems to be buggy generally, since the server search bar does not work on windows too. Also, you should restart the game if a connection attempt fails; especially if you host a server. Otherwise, it might lock up or outright crash when joining.
The GPU is a RX 6800 via DRI_PRIME, not what steam/protondb reports.
Multiplayer is black because of missing directplay. Installed via "protontricks 39680 directplay"
Some darker textures.
Only tested multiplayer and after the first day went out-of-sync within minutes and then rightout crashed on loading all savegames that were created (on windows and linux client).
DRI_PRIME=1 DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME="6800" %command%
This review is for the DEMO version (steam id: 2312690)! I tried to run the game with older proton versions before which resulted in the DX12 error. I had to delete the wine prefix "(~/.steam/)steam/steamapps/compatdata/2312690" which fixed my problem. The only thing I found weird was the rendering of the font in the intro over the clouds. Everything else felt like it was intended.
Side note: I am playing with the RX 6800 which is forced by the DXVK launch argument. Its not the RX 580 listed in the hardware on the right.
