I use Proton GE just in case, but that doesn't mean you need it. It might work fine with the recommended version. Regardless, I've experienced zero issues with this game.
Do NOT run this, it crashes your entire computer.
Attempted to open this game via my Valve Index headset only to have the headset shut off as the loading screen popped up. I went over to my computer and while the cursor could move around the loading screen, nothing else could be done. No run prompt, alt tab, terminal, etc. I had to hard power off because pressing the power button to sleep didn't even work. Upon rebooting I tried it again, but this time launched it from Steam without VR, and the same exact thing happened. My entire system crashed on the splash screen that says inivializing VR something something. I'll be returning this game immediately.

On a 3080 with graphics set to ultra using both the recommended Proton version and forced experimental, the game reported that DLSS, HDR, and some other things were unsupported. I didn't even try to play and went straight to GE 7-37 which I already had set up. DLSS became available and everything was fine, but upon starting the game my FPS dropped to like 5 and would even dip below 1 on the opening scene. Checked for a new GE version, installed 7-41, and from then on everything has behaved as expected. DLSS is on balanced, graphics are on ultra+, and everything is smooth while the fans barely run.
Tl;dr: Try running the game with GE-Proton7-41 if you have weird stuttering, low FPS, and unsupported graphics features that you know your computer supports.
If you don't mind restarting it every half hour or so it is a fun game.
The game will frequently crash for no reason; most often after reaching a random checkpoint. It's never consistent. If playing online and hosting, progress is lost unless it crashed at the checkpoint that you reach when you fully complete a level. It's not reproducable in any consistent way. Just play the game and it'll crash at some random checkpoint. I played for maybe two hours last night and it crashed at least six times.
When the game crashes at a random checkpoint in single player, progress is saved and you can continue. There is no continue from a checkpoint option in multiplayer. So if the game crashes and you're hosting, you have to do the entire level over again.
Proton 7.4 and Proton experimental made no difference. Both have the same crashing issue.
If you switch to Proton 5.13-6, the game runs without any issues.
I've been playing on the native Linux version for a year or two now. Even VR works with no hitches. I've never had a single stability issue.
The native version of the game runs with no problems, VR and all. You won't need to use Proton for this one.
Everything, even VR, works flawlessly using Proton 7.0-4.
Works out of the box without tinkering.
The only bugs that are encountered are bugs that the game itself has. There are no Linux-exclusive bugs.
Other users don't seem to have my issue, so they would likely have a pretty flawless experience.
The game stutters and freezes for a very short period exactly once per second. This has always been a problem, even a year ago. I don't know what causes it. I've gotten used to it and don't even notice it anymore but it's pretty obnoxious if you can't tune it out.
From GE-Proton7-x all the way through 9-x updating on each release, and from Ubuntu 20.04 to 24.04, this stuttering issue has not been fixed for me. Switching from X11 to Wayland does not change its behavior. I use X11. If you don't have the issue then you'll be fine since everything in the game works. It just stutters every second for me.
There are no issues running it on Proton 7.0-1. At least for my distro.
It ran exactly as it would on Windows.
It runs identically on Windows. I set the graphics options to the same settings I had on Windows and noticed no difference in performance.
