When playing with a controller you might have to wait a minute at the startup menu that says "Press a button", because controller input isn't registered immediately
Some achievement progressions don't show in Steam (e.g. diamond helmet collection), but achievements will trigger correctly. It is possible to 100% this on Linux.
It's not pay 2 win, the grind is not purposefully drawn out like in AAA games
Launch Bug: Sometimes when you launch it, you just get a black screen. So if it doesn't load for a while just restart it
Random crashes (Usually after a match ends, once during a match)
Anything involving the Steam overlay crashes the game. This includes manually switching to it and attempting to pay for in-game purchases
initial lag for about 10 seconds, which seem to be caused by network issues
You need to manually create an empty file "tracked_files" in the game's install directory. The game scans for this file during startup, which can be seen if you launch Steam via the terminal and attempt to launch Minion Masters afterwards
Use low portal graphics settings. They cause FPS drops (also happens on Windows)
Happens on the windows version too
When you close the game using the "Exit" button in main menu, it crashes
Sometimes when quitting the game it just freezes and requires a manual process kill
Modding is possible, but requires extra steps on Linux. For Windows users the modding setup is explained here pretty well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swJSeXWLtqQ
However Linux users need to use Protontricks to get the game to use the winhttp.dll file, see https://github.com/BepInEx/BepInEx/issues/110
Alright let's get something straight: The vanilla performance is probably not acceptable for most people, so you will need a modded setup with the Unofficial Community Patch.
I have tried several installer scripts and out-of-the-box methods to create a modded setup, none of which worked. Turns out doing it yourself is much easier and less prone to errors. Follow these stepts to get a working setup with mods and SKSE
- Install Skyrim SE and run once with recommended Proton version
- Download installer for Mod Organizer 2, rename the original Skyrim exe, move installer to Skyrim directory and rename to the file that Steam launches
- Run once to install MO, set up portable instance which sits in Skyrim SE's compatdata directory i.e. /steamapps/compatdata/489830/pfx/drive_c/Modding/MO2
- Add ModOrganizer.exe as non-Steam game, run with same Proton version as Skyrim SE
- Test if current setup is working. Set up Unofficial Skyrim Patch and Alternative Start in MO. Launch Skyrim SE through MO, go to "Mods" and accept the TOS. Restart Skyrim SE through MO if necessary, create new character
- To install SKSE go to the official page, download the 7z file for the anniversary edition, follow its README, configure SKSE launch in MO similarly to Skyrim SE launch
- Launch SKSE through MO, load up a save, open the console and type getskseversion
-full -width 1280 -height 800 -game Unofficial_Patch
Since the Steam UI update broke adding non-steam games, you can install the unofficial patch using protontricks. For example by running protontricks -c ./VTMBup114rc4.5.exe 2600 and selecting the directory where your game has been installed
Alt+Tabbing takes some time, just be patient
Unofficial Patch v11.4 was installed successfully. I don't see a need to use older versions
Runs good with Proton, wouldn't recommend buying the game tho. It's mediocre
Can't use the windows resolution community fix
When using the mouse to navigate along the map it sometimes keeps scrolling even after the mouse is not at the edge anymore
DO NOT USE OPEN SOURCE AMD GPU DRIVERS
Once I switched nothing else was required to start it.
If you get the BugSplat error verify files or reinstall the game.
On rare occasions FPS rate drops until you restart the game
